Lycans Are the Latest Enemies Revealed for The Order: 1886

Sony and Ready at Dawn Studios provide information on a new enemy in The Order: 1886, the Lycans.

"After thousands of years we still go to war... What if war wasn't one society against another, one religion against another, one people against another people? What if we segmented the race that we are, and formed something that is partly us, but not really us?"

Eerie words from creative director and CEO of Ready at Dawn Studios Ru Weerasuriya, but this is the inspiration for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886, in particularly the enemies: the half-breeds.

In PlayStation's second video in their series "The Evolution of the Half-Breeds," The Order's developers explain how half-breeds are an evolution of mankind, and specifically discuss the lycans, one class of this species. It's as bestial as a wolf, as lore has always eluded them to be, but they have the ability to speak the same way humans do-and you can guess they're not very kind.

The Order: 1886 is set to release February 20, 2015 on PlayStation 4. Be sure to read our thoughts on the game in our hands-on preview from E3 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/conferences/e32014/11505-The-Order-1886-Hands-On-Worth-the-Delay-Update].

On a personal level: The more I hear about the game, the less interesting it seems. And I don't know if they went back on that 24FPS thing or not, but the game looks generic as hell and is planned to be optimized poorly. I'll of course withhold final judgement until game release and there are actually reviews available, but it's not looking good from my perspective, as it stands.

Also, it would be a shame for this game to fail seeing as how the budget is massive and development has run far beyond planned. It may sink the studio.

OK. First things first. In terms of looks, these lycans look rather butt-ugly as compared to some of the usual [http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/26/98/51/werewo11.jpg], more flowing and elegant [http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/26/98/51/werewo10.jpg] ones I see and really like.

HOWEVER

I also understand exactly what they mean when they said they wanted to make them realistic. That they didn't want to go with something you might see out of a comic book or whatever. Very understandable. They also made it clear too that they wanted to make a form that looks monstrous, not something that looks desirable at all.

Yeah but those are stylistic and idealized forms of the concept. Romanticized even comes to mind. I see what they were trying to do with them, hell God of War did the same with it's enemy designs. They made the monsters pretty bestial. Like, the Cyclopes? That's not a loincloth they're wearing, it's a massive tuft of matted pubic hair. Nasty I know but it helps convey the meaning that these aren't some kind of enlightened giant but little more than a beast.

OT: I like the their emphasis on the believability of the Lycan designs, but they better have more than that. More half-breed varieties would be good that's for sure. Otherwise, I've still got nothing but thinking this is gonna be a generic TPS.

I like the words they say, but looking at the video clips leaves me underwhelmed. To me, it's just another generic monster, only now it looks less monstrous and more familiar. Maybe if they get into the uncanny valley they'll be good, I just don't know yet.

Where the gameplay at?

Really, all I see of this game is boring and extremely linear as fuck gameplay and cutscenes that look nice.

Exactly. As I said, they're made to look desirable and awesome pretty much without any real regard for realism.

There is one thing I MIGHT argue though. You don't need to make something ugly to make it realistic. Sometimes realism can be elegant as well.

Given one of nerd cultures pre-eminent ideas on Werewolves comes from White Wolfs Werewolf the apocalypse (and yes that' a were wolf in the front)... yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, ugly werewolves are neither new or innovative, although can we drop this whole "Lycan" thing, please... pretty please, I see enough stupid roleplays where they call them "Lycans", can't we go with Were-Creatures or just Werewolves?

Werewolves! Cool!

Can i play one?

Of course not. You have to play as the guy who shoots things- because that's so original.

Ehh, fine they can design their werewolves like that but to me it seems more Neanderthal or monstrous hermit than werewolf. Sorry I don't really get the wolf vibe from them maybe they should watch Dog Soldiers to get an idea of an intelligent werewolf.

So its a game about war between races that also happens to have the same name as Nazi terrorist group.

Has anybody done a background check on the developers?
