Mad Catz Unveils M.O.J.O. Micro-Console, Coming in December

Mad Catz will dip its toe in the console market this holiday season.

Mad Catz will launch its first console, the Android-based M.O.J.O [http://madcatz.com/mojo/en-us/], on December 10, the manufacturer announced today. The $250 "micro-console" is powered by a Tegra 4 T40S 1.8GHz Processor, with 2GB of RAM and a 16GB hard drive. The device will support 1080p resolution via HDMI.

Mad Catz, best known for its third-party controllers, is the latest in a slew of companies to jump on the Android console bandwagon: Following in the footsteps of the Ouya and Nvidia Shield, The M.O.J.O. will join the upcoming second wave of Android console releases, which include the size-conscious Game Stick and a rumored Amazon device.

At $250 - a hefty price tag compared to the $99 Ouya - the M.O.J.O is aimed at a more technically-demanding gaming audience. The device will have access to both the TegraZone, Amazon and Google Play ecosystems. With two USB ports, the console will support a mouse, but also includes a function that turns the controller's left stick to use a cursor on-screen.

Interestingly, the M.O.J.O's most intriguing function is the one that hasn't been announced. According to Gamasutra [http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/201880/The_Mad_Catz_microconsole_Out_in_December_for_250.php?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GamasutraNews+%28Gamasutra+News%29], it's possible that M.O.J.O. may also be able to stream PC games to the TV, similar to the handheld Nvidia Shield.

If the M.O.J.O. sounds like something you might want to pick up, Mad Catz is taking pre-orders on its website [http://madcatz.com/mojo/en-us/].

Hmmm well as great as that may be it honestly doesn't sound as impressive as the Shield, I'll be waiting for a second or third gen shield and for the PC streaming to emerge from Beta, and for it's specialised library to expand and develop a bit more.

Or it's about to be like 1983 all over again, everyone's got a console, nobody's got a product. I don't really see where the market is for these micro boxes. Sony's PS4 connectable Vita box yes, but the others strike me as a niche within a niche (High end Android gaming? Really?).

The future may prove me wrong, but I don't see a market gap between an Android/iOS tablet, last gen home consoles (that this is priced directly in the path of) and high end gaming. I think there might be a gap between Home Consoles and PC hobbyists, but that's about to have a giant Steaming wedge driven into it.

Madcatz? You mean, that company renowned for making some of the worst 3rd party accessories in the history of gaming? I'm surprised they're still around, let alone have the money to sell a console that no-one will buy.

First thing I thought. I was born in 1989 but even I see this shit coming from a mile away. This is going to lead to ridiculous over-saturation.

Yah, you buy 2 Madcatz controllers so when they break you can use the parts to make a third.
Almost as bad as "Dear lord it's like it's been designed by a drunk monkey," Pelican. (they once made a GBP battery pack 4x wider than the handheld)

Is there really a market for all these Android consoles that have been popping out of the walls recently? I can see that they're aimed at some sort of limbo between the people who play Angry Birds on the bus and the traditional console market. But I'm really wondering if this casually hard-core (for lack of a better term) market is big enough for all these consoles.

If someone is going to go to the effort of forking out $250, plugging a box into their TV, sitting down on the sofa and and playing a game for presumably sittings of more than an hour at a time... why would they choose to play a cheap little Android game? Yeah, some of them are a lot of fun, but they're the sort of fun you're meant to have when there's nothing else to do, and most of those games are designed with short sittings in mind anyway.

Wouldn't be surprised if it brakes down within 2 weeks, judging from the poor quality controllers they made (of which I owned one for Gamecube but broke within a day).

You guys do realize everything MadCatz puts out breaks within a couple a months right? Will be steering clear of this.

Tell me about it, I actually owned one of those things from Pelican for my GBC (and a nifty magnifier glass with a built in light).

OT: And another one for the bargain bin. Seriously, as much as I like how Android is growing, is the demand for "hi-end Android gaming" seriously that high to guarantee this amount of shitty devices?.

I've lost count of the number of new consoles that have sprung up, did Burger King release theirs yet or are they waiting for Mercedes to start selling their one first? Eventually everyone and their dog will have made an android console. I'd better start work on mine or I'll miss the fad.

Maybe this is what other people have known about when they claim another console crash is about to happen...granted, back in 83 the market was flooded with Pong Machines and shitty games that delivered on few (if any) promises. Today it seems like the market is about to be flooded with shitty Android-based machines and a triple-A mentality that demands you buy a hypothetical game and its hypothetical DLC months before the thing is done and then don't care if it turns out to be shit.

...

I don't think I'm going to buy a M.O.J.O. as I don't play android based games to begin with and don't really care for them.

So another niche pile of shit? Yay!

I swear, I have a collection of more failed consoles than I know what to do with. STOP DOING THIS TO ME GAMING INDUSTRY! I DON'T NEED MORE CRAP TO COLLECT!

In all seriousness, I have two full large master suite-sized rooms dedicated to bad consoles and their games. The 3DO, Jaguar, Atari 5200, VirtualBoy...

Stop this. Please. My Wallet can't handle it.
So don't buy them?

And being an Android device, by default is supported mostly by shovelware.

I've already got Angered Birds and Candy Crunch in development, hopefully they sell well enough to cover the £30 billion budget. They're my killer apps.
