Mad Max Debut Gameplay Trailer Gets the Blues

[video=7722 autoplay=0]
The first Mad Max gameplay trailer asks, "What is the soul of a man?"

What is it with violent videogame trailers backed by slow, mournful music? I'm down with the blues and all, but the juxtaposition of weepy music and splattered blood is starting to feel a little contrived. Or maybe it's just me.

Either way, here we have the very first Mad Max gameplay trailer and it looks very... post-apocalyptic. Which is reasonable, given that Mad Max (or more precisely, Mad Max 2) was set in the Australian wasteland, with lots of tattered leather, improvised weaponry and Frankenstein machines, but there's something about this trailer that feels a bit "off" somehow.

Maybe it's the seriously washed-out colors, or the enemies who wouldn't look out of place in Borderlands, or just the fact that Max sure seems to be doing a lot of walking, but if I didn't know this was a trailer for Mad Max (and without the brief flash of the interceptor) I'd probably assume that it was just another post-apoc RPG/driving game - a Rage sequel, maybe. Of course, that's just me, and I readily admit my Mad Max bias: When Wez took out the interceptor in The Road Warrior, I cried like they'd shot Bambi's mom all over again.

Then again, first glimpses rarely mean much, and while I'm a little disappointed that we're not going to get something more along the lines of the original film [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5QYYlfXQFk], I remain hopeful for an engaging, enjoyable and appropriately automotive blast through the wasteland. Mad Max is slated to come out sometime in 2014 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Huh... not a whole lot of gameplay in that gameplay trailer... I don't think I saw any actually. Kinda makes me uneasy about the game.

Did we watch the same trailer, the last half of it was almost exclusively gameplay.

Song anyone?

Yes sir I totally agree. As I was watching it, I couldn't help but think "but I have been playing Fallout for more tan a decade. Why do I need this game?"

It looks suitably generic for a post-apocalypse videogame. We just need to wait until they announce that there will be zombies/infected/french-people.

I wonder if you get a trophy when you get beyond thunderdome...

I wish they had used Tina Turners track instead of that indie stuff, the game looks a bit promising but also a bit bland, mostly because everything has to be so gritty. Just look at the title font, it´s awful...

Bah, this isn't what I wanted to see. I don't want a tale about morality and loss from a game that makes me drive muscle cars and punch crazy bandits in the face.

It looked generic, but not bad for me. Not yet writing this off as potentially interesting. The driving, punching and shotgun seemed to have some amount of heft to them that is hopefully retained in the game. People will be sore that it's kinda Mad Max in name and a bit of setting/style alone and not more faithful to/closely following the films but if Avalanche play their cards right then folks'll eventually get past it. Maybe.

Almost none of that was really gameplay, it was just cutscenes using the game models. When I think of a gameplay trailer I expect to actually see the game being played.

Because it's a tie-in game for the Mad Max reboot coming out next year. The original films may have had a different tone, but I'm guessing that Hollywood is going for a darker re-imagining.

Of course, whether or not the film will be good is another question. Hollywood reboots are rarely good, and their last reboot of a vehicular manslaughter based film (Death Race) was less than stellar.

The game might be good (especially if it's like a post apocalyptic Just Cause, although I doubt that's the case), but if it's being based on a probable cinematic abortion, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Exactly how I felt. Always liked the movies, but this trailer pretty much screamed "Look how boring our game is!" I understand this stuff is really just a teaser, but teasing with boredom kinda just makes it worse.

I know teasers exist because it takes longer to create a fully working engine to show, but I wish studios would start making their first official videos contain mainly game play.

My thoughts exactly.

Nothing about the trailer said "Mad Max". The entire thing said "Rage, Fallout, Borderlands quick cash grab".

Dear Avalanche, please don't let this game suck.

When they announced it, I was so excited. Looking at the trailer... meh. It went for the morality thing. It should have taken the quirkiness of Fallout, which it itself inspired, and turned it up to 11 like in the films. The trailer looked like a post-release trailer of The Last of Us, but with different images.

So you can play with a garage full of fire-breathing death machines.

At least, that's what's needed for me to pick up this title.

For me, Mad Max was mostly about the cars.
I agree with your point, relating to the cars. Fighting for gas and shit sounds good if they implement a good system for it but that's the part that makes me nervous for the game. Like someone else in this thread said, ":I'm cautiously optimistic."

Oh I don't know if I could handle the French. Sure Zombies and Infected ...no problem but you have to draw the line somewhere.
