Mad Max Is Australian Again

[tweet t=https://twitter.com/CHSundberg/status/352115959668019200]
It looks like "Mad" Max Rockatansky is going to be Australian after all.

The E3 set in Australia [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124862-Mad-Max-Goes-Open-World-in-2014]. The studio wanted to treat it like an original IP, he explained, which meant that "the setting - where it is in the world - has really nothing to do with the Mad Max videogame."

This, as you might imagine, did not go over well with fans. Mad Max is Australian, as Australian as Yahoo Serious, vegemite sandwiches and videogame censorship, and the thought of taking Max out of the Outback was just... well, whatever the Australian word for "blasphemy" is.

But today, the world is a little bit of a better place thanks to a tweet from Sundberg, who's clearly been paying attention. "Attn. fans who want Max to have an Aussie accent in #MadMaxGame : It shall be so," he wrote. "We admire your loyalty. You have been heard."

It's not exactly the same as promising a full-on return to the Wasteland, but if Max sounds Australian, then I think that's close enough to being Australian - and that's good enough for me. Props to Sundberg and the Avalanche team for getting this one right.

Don't ask me why Sundberg is singed and missing a foot.

Also it's more like 6 minutes...

But fair play to them for listening to the fans.

I called it. This is exactly the sort of Colonial Marines-esque turnaround that's in a company's best interests.

OK I don't want to jinx anything here. But anyone want to lay odds on whether or not the game will be refused classification in AU once it's finished?

Sorry to troll the aussies among the Escapist.

I should just shut up.

See now this is what I like to see. Sometimes the developers do listen, and hopefully we'll all be the winners for it.

Why would you even treat an existing IP as a new IP? Is it just me who feels that that phrasing sounds like a half-way admission that they will cynically attempt to cash-in on the Mad Max name alone? I don't feel that it inspires too much confidence in Avalanche Studios is all.

Woohoo!

Probably important to note i didn't actually know Mad Max took place in Australia... i mean, i know Mel Gibson is Australian, i just assumed the accents were there because it's kind of a... budgety... not very good movie... maybe films are cheaper to make there... kinda like how a fair amount of martial arts films also take place in Australia... don't hurt me.

Seriously though, this is pretty great news. Half the point of Mad Max is to hear "I saw a vehicle that could haul that tanker" in a hilarious accent.

I know, I really can't stand that excuse. If you want to treat an established IP as a new IP, then why not just make a new IP?

Who else here thinks all they do is give some poor English guy 5 extra bucks to put up an aussie accent. Instead of hiring an Aussie.

Btw. what IS the Australian word for blasphemy? I NEED TO KNOW!

Doesn't say anything about it being set in Australia though. For all we know it'll be about an out of place, Australian Mad Max inexplicably driving around America.

Cor blimey? xD

Nah I jest. But seriously, all this will probably be is a generic post-apocalyptic game, with the Mad Max brand tacked-on with a bad Australian accent.

Because they're too lazy to come up with something compelling enough to stand on it's own? If in doubt dip in to the nostalgia bin, pick out a name and slap it on to your game. Instant hype.

It's like the Terminator game I'm making which doesn't involve time-travelling cyborg assassins but is instead about a particularly grumpy Roomba furiously vacuuming the same spot on the carpet. Ok fine, it's a time-travelling Roomba. Happy now Terminator fans?

I think there's a subtle hint here for why he caved to pressure - he is tweeting from Stockholm, after all.

This is good news though, but I'm still hopeful that it won't be set in America. America has enough games set in their homeland, and it could invite some unfortunate comparisons - at least visually - to the Fallout series.

The Australian word for anything is the same as the English word with 'bloody' in front of it. Maybe add a 'mate' afterwards as well, just to be sure. (Bloody blasphemy, mate! See? Perfect.)

As an Australian, it'd nice to see a game finally set in the land of sunshine, sand and giant spiders. Here's to hoping it doesn't get banned.

On what grounds would it get refused classification do you think? It wont be violence as that's no longer an issue.
I would like to point out the movies are avaliable here.

OT: A step in the right direction but is it set here? Dammit I wont be happy till I'm finally able to play a game in Australia.

Ok that was a fail on my part. In my defense I call up tiredness due to being on the train heading to <a href=https://www.google.com.au/webhp?source=search_app#sclient=psy-ab&q=work+definition&oq=work+definition&gs_l=serp.3..0i7j0j0i7l2.13744.14319.2.14811.4.4.0.0.0.3.318.1004.2-3j1.4.0...0.0.0..1c.1.17.psy-ab.sR1SmO69rRs&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=7a5d63209b688dad&biw=1536&bih=776>work.

I fear this will be the case.

Just what is wrong with the Aussie outback? I mean the usual downside of everything trying to kill you would be a positive in a game like this.

Presenting; Mel Gibson drives around apocalyptic... Nevada.

If they're driving cars and the driver is on the left side of the vehicle, I ain't giving this game a second look.
