As someone who is part Italian, I have to say "WHAT THE #%@%!?!?!"
How is something that actually happened "racist?" Or are we just supposed to pretend that all criminals in the history of the world happened to be some alien federation in the guise of innocent immigrants just waiting to be stereotyped?

I think that The Sopranos is more degrading towards Italians if anything, let alone to humanity in general. So why take a stab at a random video game (there was a Mafia I, ya' know) when there are so many depictions of Italians and crime? Hell, look at Grand. Freaking-Theft. Auto. Oh that's right, because ragging on video games is the popular thing to do.

It's kind of depressing really.

We get a game about the Italian Mafia, and someone complains it's racist.

We get a game about the Japanese Mafia (Yakuza 4), and the Japanese Mafia discusses how realistic they think it is.
I wonder what the Italian Mafia would say if they played Mafia II! :p

Make them all Irish, I'd be more than happy to have that stereotype associated with me. Then I could get into a gun fight while at the same time drinking large volumes of alcohol, and have it be expected of me.

Seriously though, if they're going to complain about someone depicting an organization that actually existed (maybe still does) then there's something wrong with them. From what I know most Italians (at least the ones with a good sense of humor) are proud of their mafia background, because it makes them look tough. Why can't I have a game about the Irish Mafia?

As an Italian American myself, I find this claim by Unico absurd. What are we trying to re-write or history? Deny that various races and/or ethnic groups don't have a particular shady side that is steeped in historical fact?

Goodness,...Unico doesn't speak for me as Jesse Jackson doesn't speak for all blacks, or Pelosi speaks for all Dems.

It's really fun to take that protesting guy's words and say them with a Jersey or Brooklyn accent. You know, to give it that authentic 'feel' of a mobster shaking down a business.

Oh so it's completely fine when films like Goodfelleas, The Godfather, Once Upon a Time in America, and every other gangland mafia movie that features Italian-Americans, but it's not okay for a video game to fucking do it? A game that ALREADY did it almost 10 years ago? And why haven't I heard this asshole speak out against Take-Two when they DID use Cubans, Haitians, Jamaicans, African-Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Redneck, AND ITALIAN gangs in the GTA games? You want to prevent a negative stereotype of Italians, send your letter to MTV and the producers of that sin-against-God show "Jersey Shore".

In other words, this man can properly fuck himself.

Mafia got me interested in Italian culture and soon I'm going to take lessons in Italian. I'm fascinated with La Cosa Nostra.

Mafia existed at that time and still exists now, how can they be so blind? I suppose classic movies like The Godfather and Goodfellas are racist too.

That's not racist. That's badass.
But what do you expect, it's not like videogames haven't been randomly and unfairly accused before.

Sorry, Mr. Goldman - but you got scooped. There is already a lengthy thread on this exact topic somewhere in the community forums. :)
This won't have been the first time an item in the news room has been pre-empted by something in another area of the forums. However, not everybody reads every single area of The Escapist forums, like myself. Personally, I wouldn't have known about this otherwise. Therefore, News Rooms articles are effectively immune from being "scooped", so to speak.

People who blindly accuse others of racism based on the fact that there's a certain portrayal of a race that they work fondly with that makes them seem like criminals, well here's some news for them - every single race is going to have some good people and some bad people. Just because Hitler is evil, doesn't mean that every German of WW2 era was evil, they clearly have nothing better to do than trying to salvage money due to the fact that they're not making any in the business they're in.

I swear that they could make Barney the Dinosaur racist if they really wanted the money that much...

So a game about organized crime in the 1940s is racist because the majority of the mobsters are Italian, even though the majority of mobsters in the actual 1940s were indeed Italian. That's like saying that World War 2 stuff is racist because all the Nazis are German.
