Man Goes Overboard With Final Fantasy Collectible Sale

Would you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a crystal orb that says Final Fantasy on it?

Back in 1987, a game called Final Fantasy was released for the NES and it was the start of one of the world's most popular videogame franchises. In 1990, a Final Fantasy Treasure Quest contest ran in Nintendo Power magazine that gave readers a chance to win a crystal Final Fantasy orb. Ebay seller felixollie was lucky enough to win, and is now trying to cash in big time.

The orb is etched with the Final Fantasy name and its sword, shield, and axe logo. Felixollie's starting bid asking price is a mere $250,000 [http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-FINAL-FANTASY-ORB-ONLY-50-MADE-/170485985140], but if you want to forgo the auction process you can buy it now for a cool $1 million.

This might seem like a lot, but it's really worth it. The orb is made of solid lead crystal, and it enables you to cast Ice3. You'll want to be careful though, because four elemental fiends are currently after the orb and will tear your heart out of your face to get it.

Felixollie was one of only 50 winners, definitely making the orb a rare collectible. I'm just not sure that someone wants to pay a quarter-million for it. I'm actually completely sure nobody will, even though it's in perfect condition.

When a box of Nintendo cereal can $41,000 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98495-Nintendo-Cereal-Sells-for-Big-Money], it's unlikely that a magical crystal from the days when Final Fantasy was king will go for even close to that. Good try, though.

I personally figured it'd be one of those things that would hit some ridiculous number despite how useless it is.

I wish I had that kind of disposable income.... ah well.
Me, I wish I had that kind of useless-junk-with-a-famous-name-written-on-it-so-I-can-sell-it-online-for-a-ridiculously-high-price at hand... But I would probably try to be more realistic than this guy and only ask for a hundred grand or something...

Oh Goldman you fool, that orb doesn't give you a mere Ice 3 spell it gives you the legendary Ice 9. You do not want to know what happens when someone casts Ice 9.

The low low price of 1 million eh? I guess I'll have to grab 3 friends go into the woods and commit genocide on everything alive in there so I can get enough GP to buy it.

I don't know, there was an artist who canned his shit and sold it for its weight in Gold. Though I don't expect anyone to fall for it at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually bought it.

The paper says second prize winner, what was first prize..? Cause if that little orb is worth that much then damn the first place prize has to be worth like what 2 million?

But seriously what was the grand prize?

Funniest part is that if you look closely at the congrats letter picture, the orb isn't as special as it's alleged - it was the prize for second place!

Anyway, I wouldn't consider buying crap like this - even if I had millions to waste

No. But then again, my penny-pinching ass doesn't understand paying more than $300 for a car.

Well if prizes are gold these days, I need to find my ultra-secret magical fantastic decoder ring I got with my BooBerries. That's gotta be good for....five bucks?

If it were the only one in existence, I could see the price being a little more feasible. But no, there's 49 other ones out there, and I would bet money that at least 1 of those 49 would sell it for far under that.

But 1 million flat for no gamble? ... Does he accept payments in Gil? I would'nt be surprised.

Depends on how rabi.. I mean enthusiastic the collector is. Still a waste of money; I'd rather buy a BMW with that kind of money... Or maybe a house. Either way, I'd make a better investment on those things than a crystal orb.

I'd pay the $1 million for it if I had the money. I'd kill for it.... lol, it's worth it only because of how limited it is. I'm an Australian Final Fantasy collector so we don't get much merchandise here for it an whenever it comes around I jump on it like a fat kid on cake. Hell I'm trying to get an original shrink wrap undamaged new in box Final Fantasy for the NES both the US and Japanese versions for my collection, the only problem is no sooner I find one it's sold on eBay or I just can't find it.

[EDIT] On the other hand I'd ask for proof of authenticity first if I had the money to buy it.

All it takes is one idiot to bid on it and he's all set. Also, there's nothing wrong with starting high - he can always list it later at a reduced price. Also, his outrageous pricing just got him coverage in a major online publication (that's YOU, Escapist), and as I said, all it takes in one idiot.
