Let me start with my background. I've considered myself a gamer ever since I got a hold of a pc that had a game on it. Think for me that was original Karateka/Fury of the Furries and whatever else was available at the time. I've been gaming since late 80s.

Regarding the gaming industry you have to realize that women have joined video gaming market relatively recently. If you think back a decade or two ago when video games already existed they were 99.9% men only activity. Before I had access to a personal computer in my youth I joined a computer club where we did some programming and mostly gamed. It was 30+ people all of them were men. When games were on diskettes all the shops / enthusiasts were men. Then in later 1990s MMOs appeared and there I have first encountered some females. They were probably in a ratio of one to a hundred men. Most of females I've encountered never played anything apart from handheld Tetris and the like until 2000s. I believe that change that helped introduce women to games was the appearance of "smart" phones and tablets and the Operating System evolution to become actually easy to use. Most of women gamers I know still play only Tetris/Solitare/Social and their derivatives type of games that most of male gamers do not even consider to be video games because they are so different from the type of games males play.

For me and I think I speak of all of us gamers men and women we are genderless. Gaming is something we do best in solitude. We against the machine. However when we do get together to play gender is not an issue. May the best player win.

Regarding the industry of video games in general I believe that you would agree even thought the female market is new ground there are already plenty of games targeting females. I strongly believe that men and women enjoy very different video games and trying to make all games gender neutral in order to appeal to all would be a huge mistake as that would make games not enjoyable for anyone.

Kudos

I don't believe anybody is advocating we make "all games gender neutral". It's not a position I've seen.

What I have seen are requests that more games are made to cater to a more diverse playerbase, which is a very different position.
