Most of you seem to miss the point of the entire competition. It is a yearly competition *Which Bioware screwed up for themselves with Dragon Age 2* and it is a popularity contest. Which is the better one? There is no definitive answer, yet many of you seem to say that Minecraft is worse because it has bad graphics, no story, etc. etc, and then claiming that you are right.

I know this thread doesn't contain everyone on the Escapist, but with so many people unhappy about the outcome I'm starting to wonder who actually voted for Mojang...
All the people who just joined because of Notch's Twitter post, then pissed off and continued sucking his dick, probably.

Oh well, nothing we can do about it. Contest's over.

Hmm, well while I didn't like Minecraft initially it does grow on you. As pointless as it really is, just building stuff is fun. I think Mojang got lots of support for being the small time developer who's done a lot for themselves to establish themselves in the gaming world. Kudos to them for doing so - but in a dead comparison to Valve, I still side with Valve. While I bought Minecraft during late Alpha phase, I still love Valve. They make excellent quality games with immense attention to detail and huge production values that Mojang couldn't match.

The real thing that's gonna be the case though, is what will Mojang do otherwise? Yeah they have Minecraft, but sometimes you get a one hit wonder. Notch already talked about making other games that were nothing like Minecraft but one still wonders if they will reach the same acclaim. I don't think they will, but they will be high quality indie games. But do I think we'll see $49.99 blockbuster titles from Mojang like Portal 2 and the Half Life series? I don't think so. Mojang has a good place and they've made a nice spot for themselves as a great indie developer but I don't think they're the right kind of people to become a big time developer.

I think in a year or two when nothing equal in greatness to Minecraft has been released from Mojang people will lose their fervent support the have right now. I feel like this is a kind of "Revenge of the Nerds" thing going on. Enjoy it while you got it Mojang, I know how this goes all too well. Next year people will be like "Oh yeah, they made Minecraft...huh...how 'bout that Call of Duty MW3!" I can certainly see the people's point of the fact that Minecraft isn't even complete. No one beats Valve though. No one.

I find it funny how people defend Mojang with the strangest arguments.

Lets be serious for a Moment here, Minecraft is barely a game, it has no goal, there is ~nothing~ to do, unless you make it happen, nor does it possess a great atmosphere like Systemshock or Bioshock or any Halflife game.

Is there a sense of accomplishment as you fight trough the game, use your cunning and wits or sheer brutal power to overcome the obstacles in the game?

Has the game even an useful Tutorial or user friendly interface...not really. Are there new story arcs or new content included, well if you consider a update with an half year of development, which turned out to be bugged and just include a few minor features new content..well there you go!

Now don't get me wrong, I myself played with this toolset, even currently doing it, but do you really have "fun" like in Halflife, running alone trough an alien infested City/Lab, exploring new areas with new enemys?

Are you so into the game, having such an immersion in Games like Thief, Condemmned or Mass Effect, where you actually fear for your Character, while I myself let Steve plumming towards the ground, loosing half his livebar, because I can't be arsed to take the longer route?

I always hear people talk about the Time they are spending in Minecraft and I'm wondering, are you really having fun digging trough layers upon layers of stone, just to find a few resources here and there, that will most likely be directly fueled into your mining equipment again, just so you can mine more, because you need so much Stuff to build even the smallest things and you will never build anything small, because you want your "Imagination" to be big and presentable. Sure you spend a lot of time in Minecraft, but most of the time thats not fun.

To finish it up, I think Minecraft won't really hold his ground for that much time, in the end you will have build everything that you wanted and than that's it, there is no reasons to replay the game and nothing Notch could add would ever change that, because its a game, where you provide the fun, unlike other big games, where the Game provides fun for you, give it one or two years and Mojang is probably forgotten, maybe holding afloat with his mod community, but I just can see that the game has such a huge lifespan, if you look at the recent development speed of new content, its just ridiculous.

Meh. Whatever. Saw that coming as soon as it fucked my bracket all to hell. As soon as it beat the first person that I actually decided it would lose against, I knew that all hope was lost for other developers.

Hey, it's someone who understands how this contests works! Hi! *shakes hand* I don't often see people who get it.

Anyway, who knows if all the laptops been awarded yet? I'm wondering if I can de-spam my twitter feed of all the MM messages already.

Minecraft winning is interesting in that it determines, at least insofar as an Internet popularity poll is concerned, capability for community crafted content > technical prowess of a given game. This is somewhat reflected in how Valve only got as far as it did bolstered by those who loved the community-made Tf2 and Garry's mod videos.

Ugh, total bullshit. Minecraft is good but not THAT good. I guess Mojang can really herd their sheep.

At least Mojang's sheep are loyal. Bioware tried to shift things over but failed lol
