Mario Marathon Raises $46K For Charity (And Counting)

A bunch of friends just playing Mario has clocked up $46k for Child's Play in just over a day.

The Super Mario Marathon has a fairly simple premise: A bunch of gamers, some in fancy dress, sit around playing levels from a selection of Mario games. You pay them to do so. The chosen levels are determined by the amount of money the public has donated, all of which goes directly to the Child's Play [http://www.childsplaycharity.org/] foundation.

At the time of writing, the current total for this year's marathon is a whopping $46,217.00. That amount was collected in just 1 day, 9 hours and twelve minutes. Last year's Marathon, the most successful in its history, managed to rack up $110,000 over 110 hours. The one before that raised $82,382.

My one and only worry is that after being exposed to Mario for so long, they'll all start talking with hokey Italian accents and ramble on about pasta. Beyond that, it's awesome and I'll chip in as soon as I find my wallet.

I swear; wallet-finding should be an Olympic event... It's in the house somewhere, I just have no clue as to where.

As much as I think Child's Play is a kind venture, I've always stood by the belief that donations would be better spent on curing illnesses that get kids in hospital to begin with, rather than spending it on video games for them to play while they're there.

But even so, it's nice to see so many people giving to charity regardless of the charity. Makes you feel fuzzy inside knowing there are so many giving people out there~

As much as I think Child's Play is a kind venture, I've always stood by the belief that donations would be better spent on curing illnesses that get kids in hospital to begin with, rather than spending it on video games for them to play while they're there.

While I can understand the perspective, you also have to understand that being in a hospital with an illness or injury is a miserable experience, and even more so for a child who simply wants to run around and have fun. Being miserable doesn't promote healing and can even inhibit it.

Child's play gives the children the ability to make the stay there not so miserable. This lightens the mood and gives the child some reason to want to get better than to just get out. You'd be surprised at just how much a morale boost can heal.

i agree, more money should go to wiping out the illness that gave rise to Child's Play and other such charity's.

but that research takes time and we have to take care of the people effected till then
