First 100 Movie Reviews Wrap-Up!

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2344/s0022.jpg
It's been an eventful few months, hasn't it? I can't believe I'm already at this point, but...I've reviewed 100 films. This has been fun, but after 100 films, I think it's time to summarize what has happened so far. If you've missed any of the reviews so far, this will be helpful for you, and even if you haven't, it should hopefully allow me to further convince you which movies to watch, as well as which movies to stay away from.

I would first like to thank all of you for your support over the last little while, as without you, my reviews wouldn't get read. Posting in them brings them back to the top of the forum, as well as moves them into the "most recent" section of the forum, meaning more people read them.

I would also like to thank the ones of you who actually have critiqued my reviews, and allowed me to improve my writing. Look back to the first film review I wrote, and look at them now. My style has changed, I'm sure, but I have also gotten better at writing them.

There will be a few categories to work through, and for each film, I will state why I believe it deserves to be part of the category I put it in. Well, let's get on with it, as you are here to find out the films, not read a long, drawn-out explanation that is attempting to justify me eating up a thread.

Best Action
The films which are there almost just to entertain you. Not the deepest films, but possibly the most entertaining.
<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226846-2-50-Reviews-Doomsday-2008>Doomsday
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/dd/Doomsday_poster.jpg
Doomsday is a film that is so much silly fun that it manages to be incredibly entertaining. It's there for the sole purpose of entertaining its audience, and it does this really well. It pays homage to many 1980's films, and manages to tell a coherent story throughout its over-the-top action sequences.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.250737-2-50-Review-Sin-City-2005>Sin City
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/2149/sincityposter060305.jpg
Sin City is a visually impressive film, but is also really entertaining. It's ultra-violent, but also has an emotional core behind that violence. Two of the three stories were amazing, while the third was just "okay". Still a great watch any day of the week.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.248979-2-50-Reviews-Black-Hawk-Down-2001>Black Hawk Down
http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/2172/blackhawkdownver1xlg.jpg
Black Hawk Down ended up being far more pure action than I had expected, and ended up being a really good film. It had fantastic action, and managed to make you care for its characters despite the fact that none of them get much development. Ridley Scott did really well with this film, and it is definitely worth a watch.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.249870-2-50-Reviews-Wanted-2008>Wanted
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/319/wantedmovieposter.jpg
In terms of pure action, Wanted takes the cake. It is a balls-to-the-wall action film, but it also gives the audience something to think about while, and after, watching it.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.251797-2-50-Reviews-Inception-2010>Inception
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6185/inceptionposter0.jpg
Inception was a film I went to see twice when it was in theatres. It was that good. It had a brain, it had great action, and it had interesting, sympathetic characters. It was visually outstanding and was a treat to watch. It felt much, much shorter than its runtime indicates, and that shows me that it is a great film.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.251797-2-50-Reviews-Inception-2010>Inception
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6185/inceptionposter0.jpg
Inception is nearly a perfect film, and because of this, it wins "Best Action". While it might not have been all action like a Wanted or Black Hawk Down, Inception was a complete film, one which still keeps me entertained after many watches.

Best Comedy
When you need a laugh, these films are there for you.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240196-2-50-Reviews-I-Heart-Huckabees-2004>I Heart Huckabees
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/8458/ihearthuckabees.jpg
I Heart Huckabees was, to me, an outstanding example of a thinking-man's comedy. It doesn't let you sit back and enjoy it, but instead asks you to participate alongside it. It isn't the funniest film on the list, but it gets a lot of praise from me due to its interesting story and characters, along with the fact that it is likely the most engaging comedy I have ever seen.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231873-Marter-to-the-Movies-Scott-Pilgrim-vs-the-World>Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4248/scottpilgrimvstheworldt.jpg
I didn't think that it would be nearly as funny as it would be, but I ended up having an amazing time while watching it. It was hilarious, and probably the funniest film that will be on here. It also had great action scenes and interesting characters.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.249385-2-50-Reviews-The-Princess-Bride-1987>The Princess Bride
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/6558/princessbride.jpg
The Princess Bride was an adventure film, that had so many funny moments that it ended up being a great comedy. It has many different genres hidden within it, and ends up being a far deeper film than I would have thought. Now a cult classic, it's a film that you should give a look.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.242335-2-50-Reviews-Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-Curse-of-the-Black-Pearl-2003>Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/7789/piratesofthecaribbean.jpg
Curse of the Black Pearl had almost everything that is needed in a movie. It was funny, it had a lot of action and it had really interesting and unique characters. It's an incredibly memorable film, and stays entertaining to this day.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.247358-2-50-Reviews-Dogma-1999>Dogma
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1828/dogmaposter.jpg
Dogma reminded me that, after not seeing good comedies for a while, that they did still exist. Dogma was quite funny, and was a good introduction into what Kevin Smith's movies are going to be like. It had interesting characters, funny situations, and managed to not be as offensive as it thought it would be.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231873-Marter-to-the-Movies-Scott-Pilgrim-vs-the-World>Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4248/scottpilgrimvstheworldt.jpg
A comedy needs to make you laugh, and Scott Pilgrim was the film that made me laugh the most. It wasn't as engaging as I Heart Huckabees or Dogma, but it was the funniest film I watched in the first 100 films I watched, and wins the Best Comedy award from me.

Best Drama
The dialogue, character-driven films which make you remember you have emotions.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230924-2-50-Reviews-The-Departed-2006>The Departed
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/50/Departed234.jpg
Martin Scorsese's film definitely deserves a spot on this list. The Departed was a great film. It had great acting and pacing, and it had a story that was really entertaining. The characters were all well developed, and the film was shot beautifully.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228761-2-50-Reviews-Pans-Labyrinth-2006>Pan's Labyrinth
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/9962/panslabyrinth.jpg
Pan's Labyrinth is the first foreign film that will appear on my list. It definitely won't be the last though. It likely has the best special effects out of the films in this category, as it has a large fantasy base. Don't be fooled though, this isn't a childish film, and it has all the drama that you could want, and possibly more than your emotions can handle.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661-2-50-Reviews-Snow-Angels-2007>Snow Angels
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/292/snowangelsmovieposter75.jpg
Snow Angels makes me cry. It makes me cry just thinking about it. This is the film that broke me. Before watching it, I didn't really show many emotions during films. There would be touching scenes, and I wouldn't shed a tear. Now I do, all thanks to this film. It's sad, but manages to stay powerful and entertaining all the same.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.238550-Marter-to-the-Movies-The-Social-Network>The Social Network
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8041/socialnetworkx.jpg
Of the films I've seen from David Fincher, this is his best. It told a story about the creation of a website, or more so used it as a basis to have an in-depth character drama. It was a very thrilling film, one that really surprised me with how good it was.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.251569-Marter-to-the-Movies-The-Fighter>The Fighter
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6448/thefighterposterlg.jpg
The Fighter just came out, and is still in theatres. Because of this, go see it while you can. It was a really good film, and this is coming from someone who isn't a fan of boxing at all. Seriously, it was really good.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661-2-50-Reviews-Snow-Angels-2007>Snow Angels
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/292/snowangelsmovieposter75.jpg
Anyone who knows me is likely not shocked by this reveal. I really enjoy--no, I loved this film. That is not a word I use lightly either. This is my pick for Best Drama, and I don't think any more words that I say can do it justice. I. Loved. This. Movie. Go. See. It. Now.

Best Horror
The films designed to chill you to the bone. Or not, in the case of some of them.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.241026-2-50-Reviews-Vacancy-2007>Vacancy
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/5842/vacancye.jpg
The number one thing I dislike about horror films is when they decide to throw in unnecessary jump scenes. Vacancy uses them, but they are there only when appropriate. They increase the tension, instead of making me sit back and go, "well, there was another jump scene".

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240632-2-50-Reviews-Funny-Games-2007>Funny Games
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/621/funnygamesusposter.jpg
Funny Games isn't your typical horror film, and actually, this works in its favor. In fact, most of my favorite horror films end up being ones that aren't "standard". Funny Games tells the story of a family being tortured, but the plot isn't what's important. The film has a message, one that it continues to preach all throughout the film. It managed to really entertain me though, and that's something to be praised.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.235794-2-50-Reviews-Let-the-Right-One-In-2008>Let the Right One In
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2909/lettherightoneinposter.jpg
Sadly, this is the only category in which I could find a spot for this movie. It's a shame that it isn't going to win, as it just doesn't have enough horror elements to make it a real horror film. It's still a great film though, and I recommend watching it even though it will not win this category. It is well acted and well made. Go see it.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240465-2-50-Reviews-30-Days-of-Night-2007>30 Days of Night
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/7558/thirtydaysofnightver4.jpg
I didn't like 30 Days of Night as much as I thought I would, but it was still quite an entertaining vampire film. The cold environment fit perfectly, and the vampires were incredibly frightening.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.241735-2-50-Reviews-Martyrs-2008>Martyrs
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2348/martyrs.jpg
Martyrs is another non-typical horror film. It starts off being kind of scary, but by the second half, it abandons that thought. It ends up having a fairly deep-rooted message, and every single scene has a reason to be there. It's not all that scary, but still manages to be a horror film.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240632-2-50-Reviews-Funny-Games-2007>Funny Games
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/621/funnygamesusposter.jpg
While not being a standard horror film, Funny Games was the film in this category that I enjoyed the most. I'll definitely give Let the Right One In an honorable mention though, as it was the best film of the 5 nominees. It just wasn't enough of a horror film to be the best one.

Best Thriller
The films which thrill you from beginning to end, whether through their story or characters.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.234802-2-50-Reviews-No-Country-for-Old-Men-2007>No Country for Old Men
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/9914/posternocountry3.jpg
This is a film that was almost superb, but it was let down by its ending. It is still quite good, and it stays entertaining throughout, but the ending was disappointing. Note that I'm not talking purely about the ending scene, but actually the last 20 or so final minutes. It definitely could have been improved upon.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243884-2-50-Reviews-Gone-Baby-Gone-2007>Gone Baby Gone
http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/7517/600fullgonebabygonepost.jpg
Gone Baby Gone is the directorial debut of one Ben Affleck, and what a debut it is! It was heavy in the dialogue department, but the story was quite thrilling despite this. It was a fun film to watch, and marks an excellent debut for Affleck.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243272-2-50-Reviews-Eastern-Promises-2007>Eastern Promises
http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/8815/easternpromisesxlg.jpg
Eastern Promises' beauty lies in its characters. They are all incredibly interesting, and while you don't get to find out all that much about them, it manages to work in this film. You want to watch it again just to find out little details that you missed about them the first time.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.232615-2-50-Reviews-Hard-Candy-2005>Hard Candy
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1601/hardcandyfilmposter.jpg
Hard Candy is more of a revenge film than anything else, but it was still quite thrilling. It has a difficult subject matter, one that it presents to us full-on. the acting is great, and while there are no "morally-good" characters, you still want to keep watching.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.246582-2-50-Reviews-Shutter-Island-2010>Shutter Island
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/334/shutterislandposterw.jpg
Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island was a great film. It was thrilling, had a great central mystery, and likely had the most memorable soundtrack out of any film on the list. The acting was great, and the main character was really interesting. Sadly, the supporting cast wasn't developed enough to make you care about them, but a re-watch is almost a given with this film.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243272-2-50-Reviews-Eastern-Promises-2007>Eastern Promises
http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/8815/easternpromisesxlg.jpg
I originally thought I was going to pick No Country for Old Men, but then I remember the bad feeling that the ending gave me. Eastern Promises ending wasn't great, but it was better than that. It was also a great, character driven thriller, one that you will want to re-watch right after seeing it.

Biggest Surprise
The films which didn't score well with critics, but I ended up enjoying far more than I thought I would.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.227257-2-50-Reviews-Resident-Evil-2002>The <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.227437-2-50-Reviews-Resident-Evil-Apocalypse-2004>Resident <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.227628-2-50-Reviews-Resident-Evil-Extinction-2007>Evil <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.251665-2-50-Reviews-Resident-Evil-Afterlife-2010>Quadrilogy
http://www.trailershut.com/movie-posters/Resident-Evil-4-Afterlife-Movie-Poster.jpghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/50/Resident_evil_apocalypse_poster.jpghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ea/RE_Extinction.jpghttp://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4060/reabig.jpg
These films scored really poorly from critics, and I can certainly see why. The thing is, I still enjoyed them. The latter three were certainly better than the first, but they're all entertaining in their own right. Afterlife was especially good.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226415-2-50-Reviews-The-Happening-2008>The Happening
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a6/Happening_poster.jpg
This is the film that got it all started for me. I didn't think that The Happening would be any good, but it turned out that it was really funny. No, it wasn't thrilling like it should have been, but it was still enjoyable. In this case, not sticking to its genre paid off.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.241838-2-50-Reviews-Silent-Hill-2006>Silent Hill
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3161/silenthillposter.jpg
Video game adaptations don't have a great history, and critically, Silent Hill was no different. And yet, I liked it. It was a pretty solid horror movie. It might have been a poor adaptation of the game, but I still enjoyed myself while watching it.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.242946-2-50-Reviews-Ultraviolet-2006>Ultraviolet
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1173/ultraviolet.jpg
I didn't think much of Ultraviolet before watching it. Nobody I know liked it at all, and critics hated it. I didn't think it was great, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as people told me. It was enjoyable, but only if taken as a dumb action film.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228340-2-50-Reviews-Whiteout-2009>Whiteout
http://www.moviesonline.ca/movie-gallery/albums/userpics//poster_whiteout_ver3.jpg
Called by some as "The Worst Movie of 2009", Whiteout was the worst reviewed movie on this list. I knew this going in, but I still liked it. Probably more than I should have, but it wasn't a bad movie at all. It's exciting, at times anyway, and it managed to keep me entertained.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228340-2-50-Reviews-Whiteout-2009>Whiteout
http://www.moviesonline.ca/movie-gallery/albums/userpics//poster_whiteout_ver3.jpg
This was a hard choice, as all of these films surprised me more than they should have. Still, Whiteout was the one that surprised me the most with how much I enjoyed it. Maybe it was because it was panned so heavily, but I had fun while watching it, and it made me mad that so many critics hated it. Mad enough that I wrote them an open letter.

Best Film
The moment you have all been waiting for. Here are the nominees for the film which I consider to be the best out of the first 100 films I've reviewed.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.250737-2-50-Reviews-Sin-City-2005>Sin City
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/2149/sincityposter060305.jpg
If only Sin City's middle story was great, then the entire film would have been amazing. That one story drags it down, but not enough to stop it from being one of the best films I watched.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230924-2-50-Reviews-The-Departed-2006>The Departed
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/50/Departed234.jpg
The Departed also failed to win its respective category earlier on, but that doesn't stop it from being an excellent film. This is likely due to the personnel involved in its creation, as it has excellent starring actors, and a great director.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661-2-50-Reviews-Snow-Angels-2007>Snow Angels
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/292/snowangelsmovieposter75.jpg
I can't describe my feelings for this film without tearing up with memories of me watching it. This film hit such a personal note with me that it saddens, yet also makes me happy whenever a thought of it enters my mind. Go see it.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.235794-2-50-Reviews-Let-the-Right-One-In-2008>Let the Right One In
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2909/lettherightoneinposter.jpg
This is another beautiful film. It has excellent acting, and tells the story of two friends, one of which happens to be a vampire. This isn't like Twilight though, and the film takes a look at whether or not being a vampire would actually be a good thing.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.251797-2-50-Reviews-Inception-2010>Inception
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6185/inceptionposter0.jpg
Inception is the complete package. Good acting, great visuals, and and interesting story. It's my top film released in 2010, and is one that I really enjoy watching.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661-2-50-Reviews-Snow-Angels-2007>Snow Angels
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/292/snowangelsmovieposter75.jpg
I think I've said all I need to at this point. Snow Angels is an amazing film. It is my favorite so far, and it was the most powerful film I've ever seen. Seriously, go watch it now.

Intermission Time!
Next, we will look at the worst films I've seen so far. Take a break from reading all this, and maybe go watch a good movie. :p

Worst Action
The films which are supposed to be pure entertainment, but end up being pretty boring.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228546-2-50-Reviews-Max-Payne-2008>Max Payne
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3972/maxpaynepostersorrow1.jpg
I expected much better from Mark Wahlberg, but even he cannot save Max Payne from being an awful film. It had very few, if any, redeeming qualities and the one highlight of the film lasted just about half a second. No good came of this video game adaptation.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.237801-2-50-Reviews-Underworld-Evolution-2006>Underworld: Evolution
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5918/underworldevolutionver2.jpg
How did they manage to take Underworld, one of the better action films I watched, and turn it into this piece of garbage. Evolution was a terrible sequel, and an perfect example of why some people despise them. It doesn't deserve to exist, and I wish that it didn't.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.239253-2-50-Reviews-King-Arthur-2004>King Arthur
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/2028/kingarthurj.jpg
King Arthur was ambitious. That's about all it gets. The dialogue was terrible, and it didn't have all that many action scenes. It's just a boring film.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.236294-2-50-Reviews-The-Condemned-2007>The Condemned
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/2096/thecondemned.jpg
The Condemned is a film that tried to be like Funny Games, and failed. Its message was anti-violent, and that ends up alienating its core audience. Anyone who enjoyed this movie must have hated the message that it was preaching, and people who appreciated the message likely disliked the rest of the film.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230212-2-50-Reviews-Hitman-2007>Hitman
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7048/hitman3.jpg
There are no emotions within this film. You don't care about the characters at all, and despite the fact that the lead actor does a decent job, the film ends up being very boring.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228546-2-50-Reviews-Max-Payne-2008>Max Payne/<url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230212-2-50-Reviews-Hitman-2007>Hitman
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3972/maxpaynepostersorrow1.jpghttp://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7048/hitman3.jpg
I'm giving this "award" to both of these video game adaptations. Both did a poor job representing their video games, and both were also really poor films. Congratulations you worthless piles of trash!

Worst Comedy
When you need a laugh, don't watch these films. They won't help.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.235149-2-50-Reviews-Benny-Joon-1993>Benny & Joon
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/9792/13755734.jpg
That's right, a Johnny Depp film is in a "Worst of" list. He was good in this film, but the rest of the film was just terrible. It didn't have many laughs, and the development of its characters was pretty much nonexistent.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.245995-2-50-Reviews-Napoleon-Dynamite-2004>Napoleon Dynamite
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3663/36958711f.jpg
I didn't enjoy this film at all. It wasn't funny, it had unlikable characters, and it didn't even tell a real story. It just kind of had events that involved characters we kind of knew from earlier. These characters were also ones we disliked.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.229338-2-50-Reviews-The-Brothers-Grimm-2005>The Brothers Grimm
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/1269/brothersgrimmver2.jpg
Can I count this? Oh, it's my list and I can do whatever I want? Excellent. The Brothers Grimm was another film that wasn't all that funny. It wasn't really a pure comedy, but it did attempt to be humorous. When it did, it failed.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.250573-2-50-Reviews-The-Cat-in-the-Hat-2003>The Cat in the Hat
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/1718/catinthehat.jpg
This movie wasn't funny for me when I was the target audience, and it didn't improve as I aged. Nothing much funny about this pitiful adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.247075-2-50-Reviews-Charlie-and-the-Chocolate-Factory-2005>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3170/charlieandthechocolatefn.jpg
This film was nice to look at, but lacked a lot. It wasn't very funny, Willy Wonka was too weird a character to care about, (despite the film's attempts to the contrary), and it just wasn't that entertaining. (Two bad Johnny Depp films. What're the odds? O_O)

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.245995-2-50-Reviews-Napoleon-Dynamite-2004>Napoleon Dynamite
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3663/36958711f.jpg
A comedy needs to be funny. Napoleon Dynamite isn't. Not by a long shot. I didn't come close to laughing at all throughout this film, and I wish that I hadn't had the misfortune of watching it. I know some people love it, but I am not one of them.

Worst Drama
The films with characters and stories that you don't care about at all.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.244923-2-50-Reviews-The-Day-After-Tomorrow-2004>The Day After Tomorrow
http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/6074/dayaftertomorrowver3.jpg
At the end of the day, this is a drama. It focuses on its characters, but you won't care about any of them. The plot is also so incredibly silly, that you'll be questioning almost every action that takes place.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240356-2-50-Reviews-Hollow-Man-2000>Hollow Man
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8313/hollowmanv.jpg
I was hesitant to include Hollow Man in the drama category, but I realized that is actually what it tried to be. It was heavy on its characters, but the only thing that it ended up having in its favor was the CGI it used.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.237595-2-50-Reviews-Equilibrium-2002>Equilibrium
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/9765/equilibrium.jpg
I'll admit, Equilibrium made me laugh. It wasn't supposed to though. The actors, who weren't supposed to show emotion, did. All throughout the film. You didn't care about any of them, and by the end, a dog is the character you will care about the most.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243349-2-50-Reviews-King-Lear-1953>King Lear
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8050/dvd20king20lear20welles.jpg
This movie butchered the plot of the play far more than it should have. They removed the most interesting subplot of the play, and despite the impressive way in which it was filmed and preserved, it doesn't hold up to modern audiences.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243679-2-50-Reviews-Body-of-Lies-2008>Body of Lies
http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/8656/bodyoflies.jpg
Well, if there's one thing that this list has taught me, it's that good actors often participate in bad films. This is DiCaprio's bad film. The plot was silly, and there is no message, something that usually happens when there is a "political thriller".

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.243349-2-50-Reviews-King-Lear-1953>King Lear
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8050/dvd20king20lear20welles.jpg
I can't forgive what they did to the plot of Shakespeare's play. While I wasn't a fan of the play, I did appreciate it. The people who made this film didn't seem to. I still can't believe the fact that they removed the entire plot containing Gloucester, and you also don't even find out who many of the characters in this film are.

Worst Horror/Thriller
If you want a film that will shock, surprise, thrill or scare you...look elsewhere.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.233075-2-50-Reviews-Constantine-2005>Constantine
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/682/constantinever3.jpg
Constantine is a supernatural thriller. It stars Keanau Reeves. It was boring. It didn't scare. It didn't thrill. It made me want to die and go to the Hell that it portrays.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.240929-2-50-Reviews-The-Village-2004>The Village
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7543/villagever2.jpg
The Village had no character development, or at least, none that matters. The big opening offered promise, but the twist ending was utter rubbish. At least the score was nice.

<spoiler=Nominee #3><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.241559-2-50-Reviews-Haute-Tension-2003>Haute Tension
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/7208/930hautetension.jpg
A slasher flick. A slasher flick that sucked. That about sums it up.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.241363-2-50-Reviews-The-Sixth-Sense-1999>The Sixth Sense
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9590/sixthsensever2.jpg
This was the most disappointing film I saw. It was hyped up far too much, and ended up being a big disappointment. The twist ending was something I really disliked, and is definitely not one of the better ones in Hollywood history.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226611-2-50-Reviews-Zodiac-2007>Zodiac
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/3728/zodiacposter.jpg
People who read my initial review of this movie likely won't be surprised by its inclusion. Zodiac was terrible. It was boring. It was really, really boring. I wanted it to end for about an hour before it did, and when it finally did, I was so glad.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226611-2-50-Reviews-Zodiac-2007>Zodiac
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/3728/zodiacposter.jpg
Well, this might not be a big surprise. I really disliked this film. Enough that I never want to watch it again. Some films I would tolerate if I watched them with people I like, but no, Zodiac can be wiped from the face of the Earth for all I care.

Worst Film
The moment you have all been waiting for. Here are the nominees for the film which I consider to be the worst out of the first 100 films I've reviewed.

<spoiler=Nominee #1><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.245995-2-50-Reviews-Napoleon-Dynamite-2004>Napoleon Dynamite
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3663/36958711f.jpg
A comedy must be funny. Napoleon Dynamite isn't. I don't "get it". That's fine, but if that's the only defence of this film, it isn't worthy of defending in my eyes. Being low-budget doesn't make it immune to criticism.

<spoiler=Nominee #2><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226611-2-50-Reviews-Zodiac-2007>Zodiac
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/3728/zodiacposter.jpg
Boring, boring and boring. The rest wasn't terrible, but with a film this boring, it's too much of a chore to notice the good things.

The Cat in the Hat[/B]
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/1718/catinthehat.jpg
Terrible acting, script, characters and visual effects made The Cat in the Hat one of the worst films I watched. Its only saving grace was the amount of innuendo and double entendres hidden throughout--something that many people really hated.

<spoiler=Nominee #4><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.228546-2-50-Reviews-Max-Payne-2008>Max Payne/<url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230212-2-50-Reviews-Hitman-2007>Hitman
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3972/maxpaynepostersorrow1.jpghttp://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7048/hitman3.jpg
I'm once again grouping these two films together, because they are so similar in their flaws. They're both really boring action films, with characters you don't care about at all being their leads.

<spoiler=Nominee #5><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.233075-2-50-Reviews-Constantine-2005>Constantine
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/682/constantinever3.jpg
Constantine was another boring film. The acting was terrible, as was the plot. I wanted this film to end really badly too, and I never cared about anything in it.

<spoiler=Winner><url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.245995-2-50-Reviews-Napoleon-Dynamite-2004>Napoleon Dynamite
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3663/36958711f.jpg
I was originally going to give this award to King Lear, but since it wasn't a feature film, I decided against it. Napoleon Dynamite was boring, and I disliked almost every minute I was watching it. It had no redeeming quality, and I hope I never have the misfortune of watching it again.

Intermission Time!
Next, we will look at the best/worst actors of the first 100 movies I've reviewed.

Best Actor
The actor who did the best job. What else?

<spoiler=Nominee #1>Mark Wahlberg
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9128/mark20wahlberg.jpg
Yes, this is mostly a personal bias on my part, but isn't this my list? Wahlberg is an actor I like a lot. He's been in very good films like The Departed, I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter and Shooter, but was also sadly seen in the atrocity known as Max Payne.

<spoiler=Nominee #2>Viggo Mortensen
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9494/viggomortensenpicture.jpg
Mortensen was in three movies that I really enjoyed. Eastern Promises, The Road and A History of Violence were all pretty solid films, and Viggo wasn't actually in any bad films. Good on him!

<spoiler=Nominee #3>Leonardo DiCaprio
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/7060/leonardodicapriopicture.jpg
DiCaprio is a really good actor, at least, now that he's shed that "Pretty Boy" image. He makes a decent action hero, and also makes a very good dramatic actor. He starred in films like The Departed, Shutter Island and Inception.

<spoiler=Nominee #4>Michael Sheen
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/5808/michaelsheenlg.jpg
I don't like putting an actor on here for just one role, but Michael Sheen's portrayal of Lucian was one of the main highlights of the Underworld series. His flashbacks were pretty much the only real highlight of the second one.

<spoiler=Nominee #5>Hugh Jackman
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2161/hughjackmang.jpg
Jackman had the lead role in two films that I reviewed. He was good in Van Helsing, but he really showed off in The Prestige. Good job.

<spoiler=Winner>Leonardo Dicaprio
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/7060/leonardodicapriopicture.jpg
DiCaprio starred in too many blockbusters to not pick. He is a really good actor, and he was in the most enjoyable films out of the nominees. Congratulations to him.

Best Actress
The actress who did the best job. What else?

<spoiler=Nominee #1>Naomi Watts
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/2825/naomiwattsu.jpg
Naomi Watts was in some of my favorite films of the first 100 reviews. She was in Stay, Funny Games, Mulholland Drive, I Heart Huckabees and Eastern Promises. She showed me that she is a great actress, and works on interesting projects.

<spoiler=Nominee #2>Ellen Page
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/2369/ellenpage2.jpg
I liked Hard Candy. I didn't like Juno as much, but that doesn't mean that Ellen Page wasn't great in it. She proved herself to be a great actress in both films, playing younger than she actually was.

<spoiler=Nominee #3>Rhona Mitra
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/2762/rhonamitraa.jpg
Mitra was in a few films, but was only the lead in 3 of them. Still, she proved that she can be a good leading actress, especially in action films. She was a great force in Doomsday, and proved herself well in Rise of the Lycans and Skinwalkers.

<spoiler=Nominee #4>Kate Beckinsale
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/944/katebeckinsalel.jpg
Beckinsale proved to me that she can be a decent action star, as well as a good dramatic actress. She played action in Underworld and Van Helsing, but played a dramatic role in Snow Angels and Whiteout. She definitely picks great roles.

<spoiler=Nominee #5>Milla Jovovich
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3341/millajovovich.jpg
I almost included someone else in this spot, but I couldn't think of another actress who's films I enjoyed. While you can't say that the Resident Evil films or Ultraviolet were great films, they were definitely entertaining.

<spoiler=Winner>Naomi Watts
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/2825/naomiwattsu.jpg
Naomi Watts ended up being in the most films I enjoyed. There wasn't a film she was in that I didn't like, and she proved herself to be a great actress on top of being in highly entertaining films.

Worst Actor
The actor who did the worst job. What else?

<spoiler=Nominee #1>Orson Welles
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8199/orsonwelles.gif
This is going to sound odd, as he is "Legendary", but the two films that Orson Welles was in were not the greatest acting performances. He was decent in Citizen Kane, but he was really bad in King Lear.

<spoiler=Nominee #2>Keanu Reeves
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4833/keanureevesp.jpg
He was in two of the films I saw, and he wasn't good in either of them. He showed no emotion, and didn't attempt to endear himself at all.

<spoiler=Nominee #3>Clive Owen
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/1026/20005.jpg
He wasn't good in King Arthur, and he wasn't good in Children of Men. Clive Owen didn't make me think he's a good actor at all with these two roles. He was less terrible in Sin City, but he was also in the weakest story in that film.

<spoiler=Nominee #4>Jake Gyllenhaal
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/5720/gyllenhaaljakephotojake.jpg
Gyllenhaal was in two films I watched. Both of them were bad. He wasn't a bad actor in Zodiac, but he was definitely miscast in The Day After Tomorrow. I'm sure he could be okay, but he hasn't proven that at all to me.

<spoiler=Nominee #5>Kodi Smit-Mcphee
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2760/kodismitmcphee1.jpg
While he was in good films, he was always the worst part in them. He harmed both The Road and i with his casting.

<spoiler=Winner>Kodi Smit-Mcphee
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2760/kodismitmcphee1.jpg
With age comes experience, and I definitely hope this is the case for this young actor. I hope he gets better, I really do. He's terrible right now, and I wish him out of my movies.

Worst Actress
The actress who did the worst job. What else?

<spoiler=Nominee #1>Keira Knightley
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6976/keiraknightley14.jpg
Knightley wasn't in terrible films, but she was still the weakest part of the Pirates trilogy. She was okay in King Arthur, but the terrible job she did in those films puts her on this list.

<spoiler=Nominee #2>Olga Kurylenko
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5374/olgakurylenkooct302008.jpg
She was in both Hitman and Max Payne. That is all.

<spoiler=Nominee #3>Tina Majorino
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5526/64222062.png
She was "The Girl" in Napoleon Dynamite. She was terrible. An absolutely awful actress in an already terrible film. She looked into the camera in a couple scenes, scenes where she wasn't supposed to. She bugs me, and I've only seen her in one film.

<spoiler=Nominee #4>The Women in King Lear
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/953/10379883.png
Not getting to even hear their character's names in the film, well maybe once, but it didn't really matter, the women who were in King Lear take up a spot by themselves. That film was just terrible, and none of the acting was good.

<spoiler=Winner>Tina Majorino
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5526/64222062.png
Worst. Actress. I've. Seen. She was dreadful, and I can only be thankful that she was barely in Napoleon Dynamite. Every time she was on screen, things got worse, something that I didn't think could happen. Congratulations to you!

Now, for some discussion:

1) What have you thought about my reviews so far? Anything at all that you'd like to say, I'm open to feedback. Additions, subtractions, anything at all. Let's hear it!
2) What did you think about this list? Accurate? Feeling like something should have been included/excluded?
3) Which review of mine has been the best so far?
4) Additional comments?

Thank you for your time, and I hope you enjoyed reading this.

I had this planned out before I even got to the part where you said what you wanted us to discuss:
Congrats on the 100 reviews, you are a great part of our community and always have something great for me to read everyday, and I can nearly always relate to what you are saying, you review movies that I have seen generally and give good opinions.

Keep on going,
I hope to see you in IRC again some day, and good luck with your future review and may you continue for many more 100 :D

P.S. I also enjoyed your rewards and was very happy that DiCaprio got Best Actor. Go DiCaprio!

I feel like I just witnessed a brutal beating lol. You did not like Napolean Dynamite at all. I never understood why it was so popular. I have to agree with the worst actor, Kodi, he was so damn annoying in The Road. I have not seen Snow Angels yet, so I should check that out soon.
Besides that congratulations with your 100 reviews.

Oh yeah...the IRC. Gotta stop forgetting about that. >_<

Thanks!

Yeah...I didn't like Napoleon Dynamite. Thank you!

Pirates of the Carribean? Best comedy nomination? Over Shaun of the Dead. There is a word for these situations, and that word is FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

I was totally gonna give you praise and shit, but then you did that. I suppose I'll have to eat all these cookies myself.
Shaun of the Dead wouldn't have even been next. Before it, there still would have been Stranger than Fiction and Chicken Run.

I'm glad you are enjoying them. Thank you!

They could have "improved the ending" of No Country for Old Men? Jebus... What, they should not have remained faithful to the nihilistic philosophy McCarthy has established over a remarkable career, where violence is represented as an uncaring, distant entity, random and meaningless in nature, and life is but a never-ending struggle without acts or structure? They should disregard the gnostic undertones that makes books like the Blood Meridian, Outer Dark, and the afore-mentioned so darkly beautiful? How could they possibly improve on that?

Strange that you have Vacancy nominated in Best Horror. Maybe it's just me, but I found it utterly predictable. Other than that, damn good list, and it's great to see someone rip Napoleon Dynamite a new one.

Napoleon Dynamite is not a comedy, it's more of a drama.

It's a gentle, subtle and beautiful film about ordinary people doing ordinary things and I loved every minute of it, having known nothing of it before watching.

I think a lot of people are disappointed by it because they're expecting some kind of wacky Anchorman style comedy but that's not at all what that movie is trying to achieve. I'm surprised such a self-professed movie-fan didn't realise this.

Ahhh now this is a sight to see, I always thought I would be the first one to do a 100th review thread but ahh hell you deserve it. Congratulations Marter, shame about Napolean Dynamite though.

For reasons I mentioned in the actual review, I really enjoyed Vacancy. Enough to put it on this list, anyway. :)

Everywhere I've looked, it's been listed as primarily a comedy. Even the Rotten Tomatoes consensus is "A charming, quirky, and often funny comedy".

I didn't go in expecting the funniest thing ever, or really even a quirky comedy. (I had actually seen it a few years ago). No, that isn't what I expected, but I certainly did expect to laugh.

But, let's give it a look as a drama. It still as unlikable & non-interesting characters, connected by something barely resembling a plot. Doesn't make a good drama either in my eyes.

I respect your opinion but I disagree completely, I liked every character in the movie. They were all flawed and human and to me they were all lovable in their own strange little ways.

The lack of a plot is what I, and a lot of others, enjoyed about the movie. It was subtle and didn't need high tension twists or conflict to carry it. It was more like an affectionate portrait of a group of people. So you didn't like it, fine, but that doesn't make it a bad movie.

Well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, since I personally wasn't startled or anything similar by any of the jump scenes, and was generally kinda bored, if I remember correctly.

Congrats on 100 reviews and 10,000 posts!

Man, it's been a long journey, hasn't it? And you're still uploading by the day, pretty much. Anyways, I was surprised to see Haute Tension on one of the Worst lists. Nicole and I really liked that movie, but probably only because it had Muse's plug in baby.

Anyways, from the sounds of things, you have a pretty decent list here! Though, what exactly is King Lear?
