Marvel Announces Ant-Man Sequel, Three Other "Mystery" Films

Growing fatigued of superhero movie sequels and spinoffs? TOO BAD.

Although Ant-Man didn't exactly achieve the box office success of Marvel's forty *other* superhero movies released in the past 5 years [http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=marvelcomics.htm] -- earning just $178 million domestically on a $150 million budget -- it was an entry in the all-important "Phase Two" of their cinematic universe, which can only mean one thing: a sequel.

Marvel is gonna Marvel, essentially, and as such, the company sequel [http://marvel.com/news/movies/25244/marvel_studios_phase_3_update#ixzz3o58Skj7U] yesterday.

The project, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp, will be "the first Marvel Studios film named after its heroine" (yay equality!) and already has a release date set despite not having a director, shooting locations, or pretty much anything else lined up. So clear your calendars for the weekend of July 6, 2018, folks, because Marvel's next 200 million dollar advertisement disguised as a movie is on the way!

You'll have to forgive my sarcasm. I generally enjoy anything Paul Rudd is in and thought Ant-Man certainly wasn't the worst comic book movie I've ever seen, but I simply can't shake the feeling that the entire MCU is just a long, time and money-consuming con-game that ends like so [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMDP5Pa007o].

Maybe it's just me, but the fact that -- in addition to the Ant-Man sequel, Captain America: Civil War, movie [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138896-Benedict-Cumberbatch-Officially-Cast-As-Marvels-Doctor-Strange], Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and 2, Black Panther, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, all of which have been announced for the next few years -- Marvel is now teasing yet-to-be-named movies which will hit theaters FIVE YEARS FROM NOW.

Additionally, Ant-Man's second adventure will lead to a couple of other films shifting their dates, with Marvel's "Black Panther" moving up to February 16, 2018 and Marvel's "Captain Marvel" landing on March 8, 2019.

Finally, three untitled Marvel Studios films will premiere on May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020.

I mean, this has to be some kind of sick joke, right? How can this even be considered an announcement? THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE TITLES YET. (Author's note: I'm aware of the fact that I've probably come to the wrong place to air out my grievances about Marvel, but still, it had to be said.)

My personal trepidation aside, Marvel additionally released the concept art for the titular Wasp, aka Hope Pym (played by Evangeline Lily), which you can check out below.

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters on July 6, 2018.

Huh, more MCU whining... Who'd a thunk it. Shouldn't there be whining about TV series? Or comicbook continuation? Or book sequels? Why are - Marvel? - film sequels so singled out negatively? So far the MCU's quality's been consistently quite strong (as a fan I'd go further than that), so the more comicbook films the better, says I.

Aside from that: I wasn't really sure if they'd actually bother with Hope even after seeing that Ant-Man post-credit - it's a female character, clearly Marvel have issues with those... But I'm glad she'll be getting some proper screentime. Rudd and Lilly had a pretty great rapport, so as long as the script's up to scratch, it all bodes well.

It's because Marvel is well advertised and people talk about it, and it is successful. That is all the reason that is needed.

OT: I think I said all that needed to be said about this in the thread I made about this last night.

This article sounds like half of the comments in the off-topic thread (^Zontar's!^) announcing the new Ant Man/Wasp movie. If you don't like the movies, you don't have to see them, much less write about their announcements.

Same here. I would have loved to see yellow and black Wasp. Oh well, I'm just happy she's joining the line-up.

Umm, for it's budget Ant-Man was successful. Stop acting like it bombed. It didn't.

Oh, and this was announced yesterday. Maybe try posting these articles a little faster.

While I can't attest to what's written in the forums (don't read them), I would argue that as a writer here, I *do* need to cover what is a seemingly important announcement for both movie and comic book fans. In any case, I hold no actual ill will towards the MCU (like I said, I actually enjoyed Ant-Man), but was just trying to have a little fun with this news while knowing full-well the backlash I would receive. In other words... [https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/ff/d1/59/ffd1590405768ddc554f749f665db494.gif]

Your concerns are valid, and I don't disagree with them. I think what Marvel is doing with their marketing is silly and they are pushing it too far. This isn't the limit, though. They are going to continue pushing and pushing and it will eventually come back to haunt them. That said, I love the Marvel movies and the bottom line for me is that I like watching good movies. That's kept me on the train so far.

... write about something else then.

YOu know that the big MCU fans are already optimistically speculating about the MCU film coming out in 2050

Fortunately, employing my common sense (which I got from being bitten by a radioactive commoner), that is almost certainly the concept art for Janet's suit in the Ant-Man movie since it looks very similar to what's in the movie.
Just, uhh... throwing that out there.

from our perspective, it doesn't feel like you're having fun, it just feels like hateful bashing, even with the disclaimer of saying you liked Ant-man. as someone who enjoys writing myself, i know that sometimes your intention doesn't come through as clearly as you'd like, and maybe that's what's going on here.

Hopefully the MCU has an official end at some point. It would be cool if the films coming out in 2020 are all wrap up movies for the characters.

Are you assuming the next Ant-Man movie is actually a prequel??

OT: I bet none of those unnamed Marval movies titles aren't even going to be Hulk-related...

Although, now that think about it, Wasp and the Ant-Man sounds catchy...

Boxofficemojo.com quotes a production budget of $130 million, not $150 million; did you have some other source (one that includes advertising, perhaps?)

Otherwise, I somewhat agree. Ant-Man was better than I expected (especially given its troubled conception), and an entertaining enough flick, but still probably in the ranks with Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World among Marvel's recent offerings. I haven't actually been disappointed by a recent Marvel movie yet, but they could definitely stand to slow down- for the sake of quality assurance, if not fan fatigue.

I really don't understand why they are making a sequel to a flop. I didn't go see Ant-Man, but I based that decision off of my gut instinct that it would suck, however I can't find a single friend of mine who did see it who thought it was better than "mediocre". Some even said it was about as bad as Iron Man 3, which in my honest opinion was terrible.

If I'm really honest about it, out of the last "phase" of movies I saw, the only ones I really liked were Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. I really hope they find a new director for the next Avengers movie because frankly, Joss Whedon cannot make an action film (the fight sequences in Age of Ultron were horrifically bad and the entire movie was anti-climatic) and I'm sick of his writing and how he has to turn every character interaction into a contest to see how many sarcastic jokes or pop culture references can be made in a single scene.

The only thing that has me mildly interested other than the next Captain America movie is to see their take on Doctor Strange and that's simply because they haven't released an occult themed movie yet and I'm really curious to see what direction they take this in. At least I think after watching his work in Sherlock that Benedict Cumberbatch might make a pretty good Stephen Strange. We'll cross our fingers on that one.

If making more than double your money back (400 million plus worldwide) and being reasonably well received is considered a flop I weep for the state of the film industry.
