Marvel Reveals Film Release Schedule Through 2019

And six of the slots are unnamed. Let's speculate wildly about them, shall we?

It's not a shock that Marvel's cinematic universe will continue to expand; the company has previously hinted at potential plans as far ahead as 2028 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133485-Marvel-Studios-Is-Looking-Ahead-to-2028], after all. But over the weekend, it made things official through the end of the current decade, with the reveal of the company's movie release schedule up to 2019.

Here are the dates Marvel Studios has staked claims to:


Guardians of the Galaxy: August 1, 2014
Avengers: Age Of Ultron: May 1, 2015
Ant-Man: July 17, 2015
Captain America 3: May 6, 2016
Doctor Strange: July 8, 2016
Unnamed Marvel Movie: May 5, 2017
Unnamed Marvel Movie: July 28, 2017
Unnamed Marvel Movie: November 3, 2017
Unnamed Marvel Movie: July 6, 2018
Unnamed Marvel Movie: November 2, 2018
Unnamed Marvel Movie: May 3, 2019


Now at least one of the "Unnamed Marvel Movie"s does, in fact, have a name - Avengers 3 is absolutely guaranteed to be part of this release schedule. But that leaves us with 5 entries of a less certain nature. Yes, odds are good that Thor 3 is a given. So too is Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (which may just some pretty good guesses [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.854241-Rumor-The-Post-Avengers-2-Plan-For-The-Hulk] as to what Marvel is planning.

He pegs Thor 3 to May 5, 2017, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to July 27. He also thinks that the November 3, 2017 slot will be filled by a Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel movie, which sounds about right. As he notes, The Hunger Games will be over right before that point, and Marvel is more than aware that a female lead can carry an action film. Add to that the unexpected popularity of the new incarnation of Ms. Marvel and, presumably, Marvel's awareness that DC is (probably) bringing forth a Wonder Woman film around the same time, and it makes a lot of sense.

Meanwhile, he also pegs Avengers 3 to July 6, 2018. That makes sense: there will be three years between The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, which makes the 2018 release date fit the same time frame. It's true that only 4 films will precede Avengers 2, but 5 films preceded The Avengers. It's not too hard to imagine 6 preceding Avengers 3, especially if the goal for Marvel Phase three is to establish the characters and franchises who can take over once Thor and Captain America follow Iron Man with the completion of their trilogies.

As for the two remaining slots, your guess is as good as ours. What Marvel films do you think will fill out the schedule? Are you OK watching a Marvel flick 2-3 times in a year? Whatever the movies are, I just hope it doesn't release on the same day as one of DC's super films (which is happening with Cap 3 versus Batman v Superman [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136263-Marvel-Wont-Move-Captain-America-3-Release-Date-for-Batman-v-Superman]), since I don't think I have the time and attention span to watch two superhero films in one day.

In the meantime, it's presumed that Marvel will make an announcement or two at the San Diego Comic-Con next week. Holy shit! 2017 is going to be a big year for the House of Ideas. One of those could be an already planned Antman sequel and planned Doctor Strange sequel. They seem to work with the idea that all of the Marvel movies are going to have sequels. They are far more confident than their DC counterparts who wait to see how a movie does before even considering a sequel.

I think Thor 3 is an almost certainty and the same with Avengers 3, but I don't know about the others - maybe a new Hulk movie or something.

Marvel has already announced July 8, 2016 and May 5, 2017 previously, so the "new" dates are just the five ones. =) Yep, it's confusing as hell, but that's Hollywood. So, in effect, we do have seven unnamed films, but the news here are the five additional ones.

Hopefully one of those seven will have a female lead. Even if it doesn't tie in to future Avengers outings t'would be nice to have some ladies getting top billings. Especially since Marvel are trying to appeal to wider audiences with their comics lately, makes sense to at least give us some Ms/Captain Marvel or She-Hulk (a good opportunity to have a Hulk movie that is about more than just smashing).

I can guess some of them will be a sequel to Thor and possibly Incredible Hulk (crossing all fingers that Mark Ruffalo is right). I so want to see a Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) in the cards. Doctor Strange is in the cards but I'd like to see more female solo movies and I want them to prove Hollywood wrong that women can't carry a movie by themselves.

We've already got Thor 3, Avengers 3 and Dr Strange announced as being in various forms of development (they're writing a Thor 3 at the very least), so that's some of them covered.

There's also rumours, however unconfirmed, that we MAY be getting another Hulk film.

Spoiler: Potential spoiler for Avengers: Age of Ultron's ending

Apparently Banner/Hulk ends up stuck on a spaceship as it's heading into space, so there's potentially a Planet Hulk movie in that. Again, all rumour at this point, but it's out there, so...

As for the others? I'm hoping for Black Panther, Ms Marvel and... I dunno, a Black Widow/Hawkeye team-up. I could see them working in a more downbeat non-super movie, especially since they're both essentially unemployed at this point.

With the success they had with the Avengers and everything leading up to it, would it be too far fetched to assume they might try to introduce a new superhero team?

Like: Defenders, Inhumans, Nova Crops or Secret Avengers? (I'm just copy/pasting names off of Wikipedia here.) Those last two group seem to have something to do with the Nova thing that will be introduced in Guardians, so, maybe they're using that film as an introduction?

It's pretty much a given that Dr. Strange is going to be in that list and I would not be surprised if Ms. Marvel is another movie that will be getting made at some point before the end of Phase 3. It's funny though, besides Guardians of the Galaxy, what I'm really looking forward to is the Netflix series' for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. The Defenders should be fun, but it's the individual series' that really have my attention.

I'd love to see a Hulk movie that starts with Bruce giving blood to his cousin, because of something he did as The Hulk.
The, short, second act would be The Hulk getting blamed for some crazy shit, with the audience not know if Hulk is being good or bad.
Then the 3rd act is Jennifer Walters defending her non-Hulk cousin, not yet realizing she's She-Hulk now.

Thus, through the trial we get to see the 'truth' is flash backs.
Having the ACTUAL bad stuff (hey, where's that buss of cancer kids go?).

After Bruce is acquitted, Red Hulk/The Abomination loses HIS shit and attacks.
During the fight, Banner is knocked out and Jennifer 'hulks out' into She-Hulk.
She beats the shit out of the bad guy, saves some civilians, showing that Hulks CAN be good.

The end credits bit shows The Leader behind it all.
-Clearly, The Leader MUST be played by Jeffrey Combs.

Finally. I haven't seen a date so there was always a misgiving that a Dr.Strange movie would never happen.

Now that I've seen an actual release date I can breath a sigh of relief.

Considering what is already expected to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy, I'll bet my money one of the unnamed projects will be about Nova.
