So given that EA is going to play dirty and not offer Mass Effect 3 on Steam, I am concerned. Will I be able to import my character from Mass Effect 2 from steam into a non-steam Mass Effect 3?

I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to let you. If not, the outrage will be huge. I wouldn't worry too much, my friend.

99.99% yes, you'll be fine.

from ME1 to ME2, all you had to do was point the ME2 launcher to the location of your ME1 save files and it did the rest of the work. No reason it won't be the same for ME3.

Your save files are not connected to Steam or Origin.

You can import them between any version of the game, be they from Steam, Origin or retail.

You should be fine. I think I remember one of the devs tweeting a while back that save files from Steam to Origin shouldn't be a problem.

Also, as Zhukov has stated: the files themselves aren't bound to a respective online service. You should only need origin online once to activate your copy and you can choose to never open the program again, if you're a 'singleplayer only' person.

Though, if anyone finds me in error, feel free to correct me.

Sorry for the necro bump, but I do have an updated question to this:

I finally got ME3 and it does not recognize my ME2 save on which I've already beaten.

My only theory, and maybe someone can confirm or deny this, is that the drive I was playing on when I beat the game was later hit with a virus. I was able to save my last save game and everything appears like it should have been... but ME3 won't recognize it. Does beating the game create some sort of helper-file that signifies you beat it that I'm missing?

If not that, what is causing this problem?

Note it is NOT the face-bug error. I updated ME3 from origin and that isn't my problem. The game simply does not recognize my ME2 character, rather than giving me an error when I try to select them.

Did you save the pcsav files themselves or the entire directory like [PCname]_vanguard_30_19846?

Just the PCSAV file. I was lucky enough to salvage that before the virus made me resort to a full reformat.

My game realizes that I beat it. I have all my crew members back, all my party members are available. I even mopped up a few side quests that I had missed prior to beating the game.

I don't really feel like going through the suiside mission again...not wanting to chance the perfect no-death run I got my first time around. Is there anyway to generate the helper-file that I may have missed?
