This article goes under the assumption that we like playing in modern urban settings.

Fuck that. Fantasy and sci-fi for me, thanks.

I prefer the fake parody ads.

I also think that the OP was wrong. Even if you aren't paying attention, you will absorb it subconciously but that doesn't mean that the ad actually worked.

Just because I remember or find an ad amusing, I don't necessarily buy the product.

I prefer made up, satirical ads in Games.

The GTA games do this right.
I enjoyed Saint's Row 2 ads as well. The Gamestop ad in Prototype actually pissed me off the first time I saw it.

I like them, they add to the realism of the game. We need moar breasts in ads though, why haven't the marketing department figured that out?

If there has to be adds I prefer them to be fake. They're much more entertaining that way.

This guy is off his rocker.

I'm sure Pfizer could come up with an attractive and somewhat convincing spiel on how having a raging hardon while gaming is good for you, but that doesn't mean I want to pop a Viagra before my gaming sessions.

Either keep games $50/60 (PC/console) and ads out, or lower the price and add them in. I want to see some real benefit to it before you'll sell me on something.

I'm mega opposed to advertising in gaming. Today's tasteful advert is tomorrow's Evony Ad.

The problem with ingame advertising is that there are usually only a few companies doing the advertising, so they create an entire world that advertises exactly 3 products. When you go through an entire game seeing tons of advertisements for 'Bawls' but not a single ad for Coca Cola or Pepsi, it kind of ruins the immersion. If they could actually make the advertisements realistic, I wouldn't really mind.

I really like fake ads more than real ads. Sure games like Gran Turismo and NFS are fun with ads, since you're driving real cars and using real parts, but I'm partial to the GTA approach to ads.

I mean, come on, who doesn't remember Pets Overnight.com or citizens united negating technology for life and people's safety? First time I heard that I laughed for about ten minutes (easily amused sometimes)

I like them because it reminds me that they are making money, but not taking it out of my coin purse.

And since I bought the game, I probably rather like it making money.

Fake ads all the way, like the posters in Bioshock. Now if they could find a way to subtley incorporate their advertisment into a fake ad that would be cool.

Spoof adds are cool.
The only time I'll put up with real adds is on an oline game, and that's nly if they make the game free. I'll never play an online-only game I've got to pay for.

If any game company/movie needs an example of how to do advertising and product placement properly they just need to look at Minority Report.

Step 1: Take a brand/product the audience is familiar with like The Gap, Guiness etc.

Step 2: Tie it into the world with a quirky/alien gimick like in MR the "Animated Eye Reading Ads" that personalized the products to the consumer. Very cool world building.

Step 3: Use ot to illustrate points in the story, such as the fact that Ads carry out Orwellian ID scans without consent and allow the police to track the main character come fugitive. It also has fun with the fact that part way through the movie the main character gets new eyes.

There, you just created a win/win scenario.
