Master Chief: Savior Of Humanity, Pinball Wizard

An inventive new map crafted in the Halo: Reach editor drops a gigantic pinball table into Bungie's beloved shooter.

Built by possible avian sympathizer Pete_The_Duck, the map is a dramatic reimagining of the "HaloBall" game type, that asks players to use sniper rifles and mines in place of the more traditional flippers. Actually, that's a bit of an oversimplification. Players are being asked to remotely detonate mines via sniper rifle, in the hopes that the ensuing explosion will move the golf ball-cum-pinball across the glowing table.

In truth, it seems like the most arduous possible way to play pinball, but no one said temporary Internet fame would come easy.

Despite the game's inherent Rube Goldbergian mechanics, I have to give its creator propers on two points. First, the aesthetics are very well done. If Midway ever built a pinball table with the Halo license, I would fully expect to see the same glowing blue grids and functionally futuristic bumpers employed here.

Second, this is yet another example of geek creativity in action. It won't cure cancer, it won't save a puppy from the jaws of a tiger shark, but viewed as a novelty, this map is very cool.

If you've suddenly got itchy flipper ... er, trigger fingers, you can download the Halo Pinball map to your Xbox 360 via Bungie's Halo: Reach website [http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=19314663&player=petetheduck]. Just don't expect Roger Daltrey to give a toss.

Looks like fun, must have taken that guy a long time to make that entire map. I tried recreating 2 fort and got bored and played something else.

Also what is a golf ball cum pinball anyway.

That is... that's... well, that's certainly a thing.

I know it's unique and the mechanics are pretty well thought out but it just looks, well, boring to play.

If it were faster paced, and had lights and sounds like a real pinball machine, I would totally want a go, but give the creator his due, it's a pretty cool achievement.

And this is just another reason that Halo is my FPS of choice. When you get bored with matchmaking, you do shit like this. I still remember when Foundry came out and I really saw the edge of Halo's creative potential. I will always hold the bullfighting gametype dear to my heart.

I think he meant, "Golf ball come pinball", but just had to get his head out of the gutter, no offense, Ernest Cavalli.
No mate, I meant exactly what I said.

It's a Latin subordinate clause adopted into English most commonly used to denote an object or person which has the properties of or is being used in place of another, somewhat similar object or person. Ex: "our attic-cum-studio."

I guess it's true that you can make anything with Forge. The only thing holding us back are our imaginations :p

Ah, ok, thanks for the clarification. I've usually heard it as the English word, "come", but that makes sense.
Yeah, totally different word, and that's before we even start including the colloquial slang for male ejaculate.

Does anyone else here watch HORSE on Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter.com? I think they've used some of this guy's forge creations before.

That's pretty amazing, didn't know that Halo's level editors were capable of making mechanics like this, although, I own all the Halo games, but have rarely played on any of them.

I actually believe the phrase "golf ball-cum-pinball" is correct.

(Definition of the word "cum" as used as a preposition, or at least in the context above, is below)

Etymology 1

From cum.
Preposition

Used in constructions such as: an X-cum-Y to describe something that has two functions, or has been converted from one function to another.
a bus-cum-greenhouse?a (probably old) bus that has been converted to a greenhouse
1985, George Bernard Shaw, Collected Letters: 1926-1950, University of California/Viking, page 31,
He is too good an actor to need that sort of tomfoolery: the effect will be far better if he is a credible mining camp elder-cum-publican.
Note: 1985 is the publication date, but the text was written between 1926 and 1950
Used in English place names to describe combined parishes that function as a single unit.
Chorlton-cum-Hardy
That means that the golf ball in-game has been turned into a pinball, and functions as a pinball. I'm sorry if I'm a grammar nerd here, it kind of bugged me that people felt it was perverted.

Funny how most people find this boring... I used to play a pinball version in Halo 3 which actually enforced teamwork by making eveyone keep the ball higher up on the table so that it wouldn't exit the table and give the juggernaut an entrance to where we were holding up.

It got more interesting through the game because eventually you had more than 3 balls on the table and only so much brute shot fire rate.
