"Mega Expansion" in the Works For The Binding of Isaac

Upcoming DLC will add "about 50% new content" to Weird-as-all-hell dungeon-crawler The Binding of Isaac.

According to creator Edmund McMillen's Twitter feed [https://twitter.com/#!/EdmundMcMillen], the expansion will likely be called The Wrath of the Lamb, which fits snugly with BOI's biblical theme, and cost you around $3.

The expansion will add a new class of item called 'trinkets' which are carried items that give Isaac passive bonuses. There will be twenty of them, and they'll apparently turn up during gameplay about as regularly as pills or tarot cards, though you're far more likely to get them from the "fortune teller machine" a rare variant of the current slot machine. The update will also add one new playable character, a host of new enemies and a new final - absolutely final - boss.

McMillen also added that his partner for the project, programmer Florian Hisml, of Coil [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpwcx_PRNA] fame, would be looking into upgrading the game to Flash 11 to help alleviate some of its performance issues.

Production on the expansion has just started, and it won't see the light of day any time soon, though McMillen reckons it will be finished this year. While the expansion will mark the end of Isaac's story, it won't necessarily make said story any clearer. "Maybe the mega expansion will answer things more," he wrote, "or make them a bit more unclear..."

McMillen is currently answering player questions, as well as dispensing the odd nugget of philosophical wisdom - such as the fabulous; "Gay people are just like non-gay people but more gay" - on Formspring. [http://www.formspring.me/edmundm]

Wonderful game. Looking forward to more of it!

By the way, I think you meant "BOI's biblical theme." Unless there's a Binding of Lssac I'm unaware of :D

I'll have to finish the main game before this comes out, sounds interesting, and $3 is a price I can get behind.

The screencap appears to be an attic. Considering that and that its pay DLC, thus optional and to some degree standalone, I'm going to wager its an alternate game mode where you escape upwards (and yes, smite god).

As much as I like the game, it makes me VERY religiously back-arched. If the final-final boss is, in fact, God, I'm going to finally pass.

As is, the words "not sure if want" have never been more appropriate.

So, you're fine with smacking the devil's shins because he's evil, but don't have the heart to take on the big man himself? They are equal partners in the fate of your soul, and to defy one but not the other would be as empty as your tear ducts.

Are you talking to me?

If so, what? How is siding with the not-evil force "empty"?

You act as if God WANTED Isaac to suffer as he did. I suppose that may be the case in game... but this isn't the place to start a religious debate.

Anhd hopefully it'll add joypad support if it hasn't already been implemented.

Looking forward too this. Binding of Isaac is a awesome game. And a 3$ price tag, meaning it will prolly be around 2.50? on steam here then, is a nice price tag.

On his Forumspring, somebody attempted to divulge the identity of the "final" final boss from McMillen, where in his response he mentioned Abel, as in Cain's brother from the Book of Genesis. As you may well know, "Cain" is a playable character in The Binding of Isaac, the one with the eyepatch.

Might be something to think about, all things considered.

Yes, I'm sure Isaac did not suffer as his schizophrenic father tied him up and tried to sacrifice him to his imaginary friend.

Hell yeah. Uh, no pun intended. I love this game, and getting more bang for our buck is totally worth it. Though I am amused that because this game is already cheap-as-hell, the DLC is only two bucks away from the game's purchase price.

As to the nature of the 'Final-no-really-honest-we-swear-this-time' boss, I think it's too early to guess. There are a LOT of directions to go in to bring this whole matter to a close. I would suggest, however, that odds are it would NOT be God. Why? Cause that would define the game. And that's one thing BOI seems to take pains to avoid. As such, I'm expecting a much more out-of-left-field surprise for the boy who went from sacrificial lamb to slaughterer of the Four Horseman, Satan, and Krampus.

My favourite question on his formspring is when someone asks him if he can explain the ending(s) and he just answers 'nope'.

The game is very ambiguous about whether or not Isaac's mom is being schizophrenic, or if she is actually being guided by an evil and uncaring God. (The bible in the first ending blah blah blah shut up, that scene was in Isaac's drawing style and was thought up by him. Though there's good argument that the entire game is.) Regardless of what you think about God in the real world, you may have to come to terms with the fact that in the fictitious world put forth by McMillan God is an evil force.

It already has been since it's release: http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm [Joy2Key]

It's impossible to do otherwise due to being made in flash.

As much as I hold conflicting feelings about this game, I definitely have never felt that it needed to be longer, with more items.

Pass.
