The same basic arguement seems to be the one made during the creation of "Ninja Dog" mode for Ninja Gaiden Black. Albeit with the insults coming from the fans rather that series creators.

Strictly speaking, I see the existance of achievements as being a way of dealing with things like this. For those that it matters to having or not having an achievement can be a big deal. Someone could in theory always check your profile to verify a claim, and of course you won't be "rewarded" without meetinbg certain standards.

With this game I'd imagine the trick would be to add achievements to it, and make it so that the achievements for defeating bosses or completing the game require you to do so on normal mode or higher... like many other games.

I'm not a big achievement junky, but this *IS* one way of resolving the problem. Truthfully for anyone playing seriously to whom the accomplishment means anything, having or not having the achievement to "prove" they did the game "for real" will probably be a big deal.

Better then making the whole game more easy isn't it?

Most games have an Easy, Normal, Hard mode in them, so don't quite see the big problem with this. Theres still insta-kill platformers out there if you want them. 2d Mario games have a million and one ways to die instantly do they not?
Pretty much this. All this whining about an easy mode in Mega Man 10 is basically just the elitists. I actually find that to be one of the ironies of gaming, some of the most "hard core" stone cold gamers are also the most prone to whining. They act as-if this will some how "cheapen" the experience of Mega Man because now anyone can beat it. My thoughts on it are "Well yeah you beat the game, but did you do it on Hard Mode?"

I'd prefer they didn't include an Easy mode, honestly. It isn't like it'll have any really bad consequences, I just don't want an option to relapse after dying 9,999 times in a row.
As they say, if you can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen.

I'd opt for a Special Ed Easy mode, I like feeling like a god...

I expected to open this thread and see nine miles of fanboy RAGE over this, but instead I see lots of people saying, "I wouldn't use it, but I don't see why it shouldn't be there for the newcomers."

Thank you. My faith in gamers is restored.

Personally, I don't see why people think Mega Man games are hard to begin with. They're all about pattern recognition, rhythm, and timing. The first game was hell, I'll give you that. Spikes were an insta-kill even if you were flashing. (Not to mention the glitches. Dear lord, the glitches...) In 2 you lost all of your E-tanks when you died. 3 on up they included things which made things easier for the player, including passwords that would remember how many restorative items you'd gathered.

Can't make a jump? Rush is always on standby. Keep getting caught off guard by enemies that jump out of pits? Look before you leap; they'll come out a few moments before you make the jump. Run out of weapon energy in the Wily stages? Lose all your lives and go back to the beginning of the stage. You probably won't make it through your first time anyway.

That's another thing: never play a stage intending to succeed the first time you're going through it. Instead, die. A lot. Test every trap, ram every enemy, play with the new weapon you just got, etc. If you make full use of what you have at your disposal, the games become significantly easier.

Okay, with all of that out of the way, I admit the early Mega Man games are probably easy to me because I grew up on them. I certainly wouldn't expect the game to be a cakewalk for newcomers, but for seasoned gamers who routinely play FPSes it baffles me why they would have any issues going through a simple platformer. (Granted, the skills needed to play an FPS are different, but there are similarities such as accuracy and timing.)

Mega Man 9 introduced a shop wherein you could buy items to guard yourself from spikes, save you from bottomless pits, and refill your energy ten times over. You could even get an item that would automatically charge any special weapons without you having to switch to them. Everything you need to get to the end of the game can be found in the shop, it just takes a little time to farm the screws, a feat which clocks in well under the amount of time it would take to grind a level in an MMO or a similar game. It's a luxury old school gamers never had and it's something the complainers never mention. If I ask, "did you ever use the store?" and they tell me no, they're just looking for reasons to complain.

Easy mode is not a threat to me. I like challenge. I wouldn't play Mega Man 10 if I didn't want a game that's Nintendo hard. In fact, I want a game that's better than Nintendo hard, a game that doesn't rely on cheap one-offs to drain my life, a game that warns me when it introduces a new mechanic. Mega Man 9 gave me that. Mega Man 10 should, too.

If you're afraid of being tempted, man-up and accept the challenge or switch to easy mode and get it over with. This is a hobby, not a dick waving contest. There's no shame in playing on easy mode unless you shame yourself. If you don't respect you, I won't either.

There's something to be said for somebody who can admit they played a game on easy mode. If they can say, "I had fun" I say, "good on ya, mate." I'm not gonna say "fun" is what games are about because, truth be told, we all play games for different reasons, but if that's all somebody is looking for there's no reason to put them through the wringer when they get it. As for me, don't pat me on the back til' I've gotten MM10's version of Mr. Perfect. It's super hero mode on day one for me.

Remember the new Super Mario Bros. game? I think that proved to most of us that Easy modes like this do not make games easier, but that they do in fact make for harder games in the end, and why we're not seeing a backlash against this news.

The reason behind that is simple, before modes like this and things like that auto-play thing, games usually catered to the lowest denominator. Now that they have made these new kind of Easy modes, they're free to make the rest of the game as punishing as they wish. It's the same with WoW, so many people whined about how casual it was getting, but now they included an optional Hard Mode and certain achievements. You think the game is too easy? Nothing is stopping you from stepping up a notch, go get A Tribute to Immortality [http://www.wowwiki.com/A_Tribute_to_Immortality] just to name something.

And in the end, that's a very good thing, simply because it gives players more freedom. Freedom to play the game as they wish. Hence, I approve of this news.

Seriously, WHO CARES? They're adding an Easy mode to a game, and suddenly it's a massive deal? I know lots of games that are meant to be hard with an Easy mode. WHY IS THIS AMAZING?

Because it's in 3D!

Er... Not really.

I honestly don't get this - why the hell do people even want a pixel based game? And why is it a fuss just because they want people to, you know, be able to complete the game if they don't want to devote 50 hours to it?

I know MovieBob was excited about having a pixel man game, but really? There's that much demand of inferior graphics purely for the sake of inferior graphics?

OK then... so they give the option of going to easy mode, but there's still the normal & hard unchanged.
How's that a bad thing?
It would be different if they made normal and hard easier, but an optional extra mode for beginners that they don't force you to play, I really can't comprehend why people would be against that.

For nostalgia's sake, and because graphics don't automatically confer good gameplay, nor do they substitute for story or even anything.
I imagine it also gives more development time if they don't have to draw and animate everything in high detail, or to learn a new game engine or whatever.

Photo-realistic graphics don't make a game good. They don't make a game anything beyond 'it looks nice' really.

Or that its not hard enough. Or that the bosses move 3 milliseconds too fast. Because fans (cough-fanboys-cough) will complain about anything regardless of if its justified or not ;).

Why are you going on at me about "Good Graphics != Not Good Gameplay"? I have stated that myself several times. I just don't see the point of proposely going backwards just because; at least Darwinia had a stylized retro look too it, and S. Mario Bros Wii had the old gameplay with nice graphics.

No, good graphics don't make a good game, but why make them bad because you can?

I just don't understand this need to make these games as hard as possible. Yes, people like a challenge, but not acts in frustration. I played the early NES Mega Man games and found the difficulty to be challenging but still fun. I played a demo of Mega Man 9 and was turned off rather quickly. I didn't like how the game was making a concerted effort to kill me with hard jumps and platforms that threw me into insta-kill spikes. Just try to make a game that is hard but not to the point of controller smashing frustration.

I like the Easy mode idea. It means that those who want the Mega Man experience can still have it and those who don't want to break their controllers can choose Easy Mode.

Well it might help me train up to take on the more normal modes of Mega Man difficulty. I have a shameful secret.

I never had the original Mega Man games on the NES. I did however download Mega Man 9 on my Wii and only got past Splash Woman.

How do you suggest they make a platformer difficult without including hard jumps?

Second, where did you run into any of that during the demo? There are no platforms that launch you into insta-kill spikes on Concrete Man's stage. There are blocks which you'll fall through, but they're clearly different than the rest. Hard jumps? You'll only find those at the end of the stage and there's a lot of room for error.

Ain't your thing? Fine. But criticize the game for what it is. Speaking as a fan, the difficulty is part of why I play.

And on the whole 8-bit graphics issue: I think of it as an art style. Graphics are so advanced at this point that I see no reason not to use whatever style best suits your work. Since MM9 was meant to ape Mega Man 2, they wanted to signal it was a nostalgia trip by using old graphics. Since MM9 did well, it looks like they're doing 10 in the same style.

Personally, I'd have no problem with better graphics. I'm a weirdo that loved MM7 and MM8 (I think MM7 is one of the best in the series). Sure, MM7's sprites were a little clunky, but I liked their overall style. But you know what? I squealed like a little girl when they announced MM9 was going to be 8-bit. I don't know exactly why, but those simplistic, bug-eyed NES sprites have a charm that'll never wear off on someone like me. Maybe it's a generational thing.

"Good" 3D is only good until the end of a console generation. Good 2D is forever.
