Personally, I don't see why people think Mega Man games are hard to begin with. They're all about pattern recognition, rhythm, and timing. The first game was hell, I'll give you that. Spikes were an insta-kill even if you were flashing. (Not to mention the glitches. Dear lord, the glitches...) In 2 you lost all of your E-tanks when you died. 3 on up they included things which made things easier for the player, including passwords that would remember how many restorative items you'd gathered.
Can't make a jump? Rush is always on standby. Keep getting caught off guard by enemies that jump out of pits? Look before you leap; they'll come out a few moments before you make the jump. Run out of weapon energy in the Wily stages? Lose all your lives and go back to the beginning of the stage. You probably won't make it through your first time anyway.
That's another thing: never play a stage intending to succeed the first time you're going through it. Instead, die. A lot. Test every trap, ram every enemy, play with the new weapon you just got, etc. If you make full use of what you have at your disposal, the games become significantly easier.
Okay, with all of that out of the way, I admit the early Mega Man games are probably easy to me because I grew up on them. I certainly wouldn't expect the game to be a cakewalk for newcomers, but for seasoned gamers who routinely play FPSes it baffles me why they would have any issues going through a simple platformer. (Granted, the skills needed to play an FPS are different, but there are similarities such as accuracy and timing.)
Mega Man 9 introduced a shop wherein you could buy items to guard yourself from spikes, save you from bottomless pits, and refill your energy ten times over. You could even get an item that would automatically charge any special weapons without you having to switch to them. Everything you need to get to the end of the game can be found in the shop, it just takes a little time to farm the screws, a feat which clocks in well under the amount of time it would take to grind a level in an MMO or a similar game. It's a luxury old school gamers never had and it's something the complainers never mention. If I ask, "did you ever use the store?" and they tell me no, they're just looking for reasons to complain.
Easy mode is not a threat to me. I like challenge. I wouldn't play Mega Man 10 if I didn't want a game that's Nintendo hard. In fact, I want a game that's better than Nintendo hard, a game that doesn't rely on cheap one-offs to drain my life, a game that warns me when it introduces a new mechanic. Mega Man 9 gave me that. Mega Man 10 should, too.
If you're afraid of being tempted, man-up and accept the challenge or switch to easy mode and get it over with. This is a hobby, not a dick waving contest. There's no shame in playing on easy mode unless you shame yourself. If you don't respect you, I won't either.
There's something to be said for somebody who can admit they played a game on easy mode. If they can say, "I had fun" I say, "good on ya, mate." I'm not gonna say "fun" is what games are about because, truth be told, we all play games for different reasons, but if that's all somebody is looking for there's no reason to put them through the wringer when they get it. As for me, don't pat me on the back til' I've gotten MM10's version of Mr. Perfect. It's super hero mode on day one for me.
