I'm stunned that nobody has yet mentioned Thunderstruck, Hell's Bells, or Paradise City.

That was the intro song to their concert like 2 years ago and it was pretty sweet.

It's the only one I listen to. That and Shadow of the Day sometimes.

The Running Free - Coheed & Cambria, just a great atmospheric intro combined with a glimpse of the guitar that they get into in the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE2e2Gf8NAk

Oh, I think it goes without saying that Metallica's One gets a mention here as well.

Interesting anicdote about that song

despite it being (by far) their biggest hit, that string section in the intro is from an orchestrated Rolling Stones song (from memory You Can't Always Get What You Want, but i'll have to look it up). unfortunately nobody cleared the sample, and the Verve got sued to the tune of stupid amounts of cash.

This too.

EDIT:
Just remembered: Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. Sorry, no link, but it was in RockBand, so I'll assume most of you know it.

I've long thought Falling Snow by Agalloch has one of the most arresting intros I've ever heard.

Indestructible - Disturbed

I started playing it, with my friend sitting beside me (who is btw from Azerbaidzjan, and before he moved to Sweden there was a war in Azerbaidjan).
And the intro of Indestructible is sirens and gunfire, so my friend went wtf before he realized it was my cellphone and not war and started laughing as hell :)
