Metal Gear Solid V Goes Mature In New Red Band Trailer

We've got a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V! Okay, actually it's not new. It's a red band re-issue of yesterday's footage, but there's an extra two minutes of stuff in this one.

Just yesterday we reported [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124774-Open-World-Metal-Gear-Solid-5-Coming-to-Xbox-One] on the first substantial trailer for Metal Gear Solid V. Remember that? Things were overwrought and melodramatic, and it was jarring to hear Jack Bauer's voice come from the lips of everyone's favorite eyepatch and beard aficionado. Still, it was exciting to see footage from a new Metal Gear Solid title, and with that in mind we'd like you to watch it all over again.

The clip embedded at top-right is the red band edition of the trailer I just mentioned. Meaning: There's nothing preventing Konami from filling this thing's 9-plus minute runtime with violence, swears and genitalia. That's not what's happened here, but the publisher was kind enough to include new material. More than two minutes of new footage, to be specific.

Despite this new content, I largely feel the same way about Metal Gear Solid V as I did yesterday: Looks pretty, seems fun, needs more David Hayter. Look, I like Kiefer Sutherland in almost anything - he was fantastic in The Lost Boys - but after spending more than a decade with one man doing the voice of an iconic character, switching up like this (even if the new actor has way more Hollywood clout) is weird. It makes me feel uncomfortable for reasons I can't explain.

That said, I like the new ideas I see in this trailer. Horses? Awesome! I just hope that we're allowed to eat them. Subsist on tree frogs for too long and horse looks delicious.

Game looks promising. I'm interested in seeing how well the stealth game play translates into an open world setting. One advantage I can see is perhaps a improvement in the game play to cut scene ratio that has been a problem since the beginning of this series.

But I'm still not sure on Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss. Maybe I just need to get used to it but I get a weird disconnect where I see Big Boss lips moving but hear Jack Bauer like I've muted the wrong video.

I think Kojima needs to lay off the torture porn... ..it's getting creepy.

The game looks awesome... ..I'm just not sure I actually want to play it.

That feel when you actually thought Keifer Sutherland did a pretty good job :/

But damn, this game looks beautiful. I hope Konami doesn't waste this engine like they did Metal Gear Solid 4's engine. I'm also excited to return to huge open levels like mgs4. I hope this game is long and they balance the cut scenes

Well that beginning was rather brutal.

But after now hearing him, I can see Kiefer making a good Big Boss. We'll see how it goes it in the full game when it comes out, but right now I'm optimistic about him, and the game in general.

Strangling a kid and taking a package from a woman's belly, that's Kojima for you right there ;)

STOP AIMING WITH YOUR BLIND EYE.

Anyway this was probably my highlight for E3. If this were part of the Sony conference I might have just lost it.

OK, that package in the belly thing was...something I was not expecting. Very weird. Ocelot was getting his torture quota for the trailer by electrocuting poor Quiet and some schmuck in a suit. Also like I how I didn't notice Kaz was missing both and arm AND a leg. Knew he had no arm, but not a leg! Jeez.

Kiefer as Snake...have to hear more. I'm sure he'll do fine, but this trailer was more "Kaz and Ocelot" speak than anything else. Speaking of Ocelot...Troy Baker? Sort of sounds like him, and even the face looks like him. Was being the Joker in Arkham Origins and the main protagonist of Infamous Second Son not enough (Kidding, love his work actually =D)? Regardless, I actually like it. I feel like its a steady progression into what he would sound like in later games. I want to say the same for Snake, but again, have to hear more.

Game looks amazing graphically of course. Nice seeing little touches like that bag over the prisoners head inflating in and out due to breathing. For some reason I can't get over the way Eli looks. He just looks too real in the face. Always sort of stare at it when I watch the trailer.

Still feel like I'm missing some sort of...gimmick with this game. Something that is going to pull the rug out from underneath you or whatnot. Especially considering the whole "Those that don't exist" and just the weird promotion for this game in general.

...

Or maybe I just miss David Hayter. =(

Its for the ps3 as well not all the games in the Xbox conference we exclusives. Microsoft paid off a few companies to just sorta not mention being available on multiple platforms to confuse people so it looks like they have a better lineup.

Well, I'm interested. I completely stopped caring about Revengeance (a protagonist I don't like with gameplay that just didn't look interesting to me), but I'll probably get Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain.

And I will really miss David Hayter as well, but seeing as Senior had a different look and age than Junior at the end of MGS4, I can convince myself that this just distinguishes the two characters. (Let's face it, they are quite different at times...) And it doesn't seem like Sutherland will do a bad job of it.

Kiefer Sutherland is definitely an improvement over Hayter. Yes, Hayter is "iconic" and all, since he voiced Solid Snake on the PS1, but he has no range to his voice. His one-note gruff really hurt some of the more recent MGS games. Sutherland is a far more accomplish and capable actor. His voice is different, but change can be better. Kojima brought on Sutherland because he wanted to bring out more personality from Snake's voice, something that Hayter is unable to do. Voice acting standards have risen since 1998, and for a game that is heavy on cinematic cutscenes, voice acting is important. Sometimes you have to break tradition to improve the franchise. It'd be silly to hamstring the future of a franchise solely based on some voice actor that got casted 15 years ago, especially when the replacement is significantly better. That's like insisting that all future Batman movies can only star Adam West, or hating on Daniel Craig for not being similar to Roger Moore.

Define "Mature" without using the words violence, swears, sex, genitalia or any of those word's synonyms.

That looked like Chico rummaging through Paz's stomach while Miller and Big Boss hold her down.
If I wasn't on a public computer I'm not sure I'd have the self-restraint not to throw up tbh.

... Are they just going to kill off half these characters by the end of the game? Goddamnit I don't think my heart could take it.

Is that Kaz in the swanky new coat with Ocelot?
I can't imagine it being anybody else, but Kaz wearing a suit doesn't register with my brain.
