Metro 2033 in 2010

More Ukrainian first-person weirdness is on the way thanks to THQ [http://www.thq.com], which has signed up to publish the post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2033 from 4A Games.

Metro 2033 is set in near-future Moscow - the year 2033, as you may have guessed - in the aftermath of a world-ending cataclysm which has driven the Earth's few survivors underground. Taking on the role of Artyom, who has grown up in the subterranean mazes of the Moscow Metro subway, the player is forced outside by a "desperate event" which launches him on the game's central quest.

The game was GSC Game World [http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/gc_metro-2033_the-last-refuge].

Metro 2033 is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's popular novel of the same name, which has sold "hundreds of thousands of copies in Russia" according to Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/thq-signs-russian-shooter-metro-2033], but not much else is known. Comparisons with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - which, for the record, is the most awesome Ukrainian FPS set in a fictionalized version of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone ever - are inevitable and if it can hold its own then it should be a very good game indeed. Metro 2033 is currently scheduled for release in 2010 on PC and the Xbox 360.

If S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is anything to go by, unforgiving and brutal.

Still, looks awesome. I might have another stab at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. again, actually...

Watched the trailer not expecting to be remotely interested but... There's definitely something about it that's caught my eye. One to watch me thinks.

That sounds almost exactly like a game idea I had (Except it was in New York and they were forced into hiding because of perpetual winter, and you never go to the surface) just goes to show the truth that everything that can be thought of has.

OP:Sounds cool, I may get it. Why is it considered 'Weirdness'?

EDIT: Awww....no PS3 version? Damnable developers and their favoritism! *Shakes fist*

Interesting... I've heard of the book before and I wanted to read it. Now I want to play the game as well... I've wondered for a long time what a post apocalyptic story set in Russia would read like/look like. Almost all of the post apocalyptic stories are set in the US.

Sounds like Fallout to me; not criticism, but just a note.
Fallout wishes it was STALKER - and if the trailer is anything to go by (which hopefully it is) this game is more STALKER than Fallout.
Personally I'm psyched, Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky remains two of my favorite games I've ever played. So my wish-list now consists of Metro 2033 and STALKER: Call of Pripyat. Good times to be had in post-apocalyptica.

I feel kinda dissapointed to say that the trailer inspired nothing in me, which is dissapointing for me because i've wanted to play STALKER for a while now...

I've only read the following words about Metro 2033: Ukrainian, post-apocalyptic, STALKER, and weird.

... I'll definitely be buying it.

Looks more like a darker version of Fallout 3 universe.

Unless they include ESP or psychic baddies into the mix, then it can't really be compared to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Per discussion with Metro's developers at russian forums the game will be more linear than STALKER, less RPG-like. There will be ammo instead of money - I wonder if it will make gameplay different then any other FPS (save ammo for new guns and so on).

I hope it will be a strong FPS, 'cause I adore post-apocaliptic stuff. And yes, Shadow of Chernobyl is one of my favourite games.

PS: some artwork and old shots: http://www.metro-game.com/plug.php?e=gallery
