Is it the same protagonist as the previous game?

And if so, How the hell did he escape

well, you're overseeing the fact that he's also russian, and therefor capable of inventive and hilariously crude solutions to many problems in life.

also, his comrades knew he was there, they do seem like the kinda people that don't leave people behind needlessly, I mean, not Ulman, right?

All this game needs to be good is be like Metro 2033, except more polished.

True, He probably made a ladder out of mutant intestines, babies tears, and his own waste and just climbed down to freedom.

After having to wrestle said ladder into submission, first.

Ah Ulman.

Hope he also makes an appearance in the new game.

There was some good characterisation in the first game and great immersion.

All the individual factions even had a flavour and character all of their own.
