Metro: Last Light Reveals the Commander's Dark Fate

The final Metro: Last Light "Survivors" trailer is out, and I think I'm just going to cry.

I can't say definitively that the Commander's tale is worse than the Model's [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120845-Metro-Last-Light-Gets-Another-Survivor], but I can say that collectively, the "Survivors" videos make up the darkest, most depressing marketing campaign I've ever seen. This stuff is just terrible: "There's a nuclear holocaust and nearly everybody dies, and the few who don't are reduced to little more than animals, eking out a violent existence in dank, subterranean tunnels!"

And the part where the hero comes along to save the day? Yeah, not so much. The "good" outcome to Metro 2033 [http://www.amazon.com/THQ-40470Metro-2033-Metro-Download/dp/B0047T7UE4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354739362&sr=8-2&keywords=metro+2033] was that you didn't unleash even more nuclear devastation on the shattered remains of Moscow. That's right, the best you could hope to do is avoid adding to the horror and sorrow.

Anyway, back to the Commander, who isn't faring too well in the Metro. Turns out that his decision to lock the doors, while the "correct" one, doesn't sit too well with the people who left loved ones outside to die. And as you might expect, they're not in the mood to talk it out - they're looking for payback.

Boy, how could you not want to buy this game?

All this marketing...All this need to generate hype is making me doubt on how good this game is going to be.

If I'm not mistaken while Metro 2033 was really good, it sold rather poorly so considering that THQ is facing bankruptcy and they only have a few games to release they need them to do well hence all of the advertising.

I'd also like to point out that the "Happy" (Read: not particularly happy at all) ending is NON CANON.
That's right, the sequel follows on from the even more depressing versions of a game that was already wrist-slittingly depressing!
FUN!

This is one of the many reasons why I wish game developers were not so anal about adding the dynamic ability to very slowly kill people in a drawn out and gratuitous manner. You are probably going to meet the Commander and save him which will either involve talking your way out of it, or quickly killing his attackers. Never any emotional satisfaction in 86ing assholes in video games.

My impression is that these trailers are set relatively soon after the holocaust, rather than in the time of the actual game. After all, none of the characters appear to have aged any. The use of bullets to pay for the Model's services does indicate that enough time has passed for an alternative economy to emerge, so a few years, maybe? It's also not clear when the beating took place relative to his appearance at the start of the trailer, when he picks up whatever it was off the ground.

Rationalizations aside, I'm willing to give them a little artistic latitude. The trailers do a great job of setting an incredibly bleak tone, after all.

Yup. For those not in the know, the "bad" ending is how things officially worked out and where Metro: Last Light will pick up. Nobody does post-apoc like the Slavs.

Atyom launched the missile, killing most of the Dark Ones who were just trying to communicate with us but most humans couldn't handle psychic 'talk' and their minds failed.

Whereas the "Happy" ending had

Artyom realising that the Dark Ones meant no harm, and managing to abort the missile launch in time.
The book had Artyom realise they meant no harm just in time to helplessly watch as they were destroyed.
