I'm sure there are others like me, but are people kind of scared about the way the series is going/has gone? I thought Snake's death would mean the end of an era and the end of Metal Gear as we know it, along with Hideo Kojima stating - as he always does - this was his last MGS. But of course they will continue a profitable franchise. But does anyone else think that this is the end of good Metal Gear games?

I know there are many who don't necessarily like Kojima's directorial style in that it's very cinema-esque and heavily based on complex narratives, but this is more for those who are into the series, whether it be a little or a lot.

I'm not sure how Raiden will be as a main character in the upcoming Rising, but then we don't know too much about the game yet. I hate to be judge, jury and executioner when I know little so I try and keep an open, yet pessimistic mind (to avoid too much dissapointment) but I can't help but get excited over MGS titles. I've been a fan for so long and I'd hate top see the series go to pot, but I fear this may be the point at which the games stop being great.

My question is thus, does anyone else share this forboding feeling about the series or can anyone see it as a new light, a new beginning for an old series? Please discuss, I'd love ot hear what others have to say about it.

I'm not really afraid of what the future brings for MGS. I haven't played MGS 4, and it seems I never will at this rate, but 1 through 3 have been fantastic (yes, I thought 2 was marvelous), which leads me to have some faith in Kojima. I doubt he will let his series become dreadful. I think the worst that could happen is that he makes more of the same, which is still pretty nice.

In short, I have some trust in Kojima.

I also enjoyed MGS2, but my fear lies in his power. He has so many fans now that it seems he can screw us around with cries of 'I'm leaving!' and bullshit countdown timers on his website that this may leak into the games he produces. Anyone else feel this way?

I don't. Kojima's just out of his mind. He's always been out of his mind. I think he's just having a bit of what he considers fun. Passing the time until his games are done.

I have faith in Kojima, and i'm one of the few people who think ditching Snake in favour of Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was just pure genius.
The way he's interwoven all of the games into the ending of four was just amazing.
I think Solid Snake's had his day, but I personally would like to see some games from Gray Fox (before he became ninja) or more from Naked Snake's perspective.
Maybe even a game that fleshes out more of Roy Campbell's story perhaps?
I think the Metal Gear series has unlimited potential and Kojima truly has created something very unique.

I agree with many of your points, including expanding the history of the series and characters. But my fear is that he'll extend the story into the future. I think so far I have made the assumption that Rising will take place after MGS2 and before 4 but I'd hate to see him try and extend it beyond 4. I saw that as the end of the story, not just Snake's story but the whole series. Okay, it was left kinda open but I liked that. It meant I would never know what happened to Snake in the end, did he die? Did he enjoy his life?

I don't want to see what happened to the world after the 'last' epic adventure, because I think it can't be topped, and any attemp to do so would hurt more than help.

I am looking forward to Rising, but, as always, with a degree of scepticism. I am a huge Frank Jaeger fan, hence the screen name, and would love to see more with him as a main character, and also the rise of Big Boss is something any MGS fam should want to see more. I'm even for the idea of current gen remakes of the original two games. I just have my worries is all.

I think your idea of storming the original Outer Haven in current-gen graphics is a freaking brilliant idea. let's hope Kojima's reading this forum.
And as for Rising, i'm praying they don't take the stealth out of it, and they use the fact that he's a cybernetic ninja thing now, as part of the stealth system.
In Metal Gear Solid 4, for me it was a little bit of a letdown as if you were spotted, it meant nothing. Get out a shotgun, pop him in the head, he's dead, kill the next fews guys, alarm's still going, but no more guys come out, like wtf?
In the previous 3, if you were spotted, you usually got absolutelt pwned (unless you possesed the Fa-Mas).
MGS4 focused more on action and story, which was ok, but Hideo strayed from his roots.

But we all know that's not how it always works. And the real question is, what is wanted? Raiden isn't the most popular character and there was outrage in the West over MGS2, but did MGS4 change minds?

Good point. I didn't really think of that

The original 2 games would be great to see on current platforms with updated gameplay and the voices included. It would be a great way of keeping David Hayter as a part of the series besides his role as Naked Snake, and it would open up those games to the current generation who don't necessarily want to play with sprites in a top down world. I doubt he's reading this forum, but I'm sure this thought has been echoed in other forums by more than just me. So Hideo! Take notes!

But I can understand your dissapointment. But for me, the fact that I din't get endless streams of guards ambushing me felt a bit more real. I know the game isn't exactly realistic, but it made the enemy feel more human. There'll only be so many guards in the area with a couple assault teams ready to be deployed, even in the most organised warzone, so it added that sense of immersion for me, but again, I can understand how you feel.

I think MGS4 wouldn't have been right without a heavy story though, as it was an ending we needed loose ends wrapped up, we needed an epic last stand, we needed an in depth story, more so than the other titles. I agree it was different to the norm, but I believe it was a necessary step, taken to make Snake go out the way he should.

I don't know that sneaking will remain a part of Rising, I'm sure it will with Peacewalker as apparantly there are even different types of cardboard box to use. But the 'Lightning Bolt Action' tagline to me, says that it may be about speed and power than anything. I hope that sneaking does remain, as according to what I saw - or rather heard - in MGS4 is that Raiden knows how to track a target and stay hidden while doing so (I didn't spot him in South America, did you?). So maybe there's hope for that yet.

Lol, I'm talking a huge console game here, not a PSP exclusive. I'm not devaluing the game, just saying that I think games tend to be more epic on consoles.

There's going to be another game??? Oh good god. MGS 2 was the first game in the series I ever played and genuinley I enjoyed it. Then I played MGS 1 and realized how incredibly naive I had been. Without Snake the series is dead. No one wants more of Raiden running around in his skintight suit and waving his ninja sword around pretending to be Gray Fox. Maybe if they sew his mouth shut and all he can do is grunt and he wears a Snake mask and Rose is run over by a tank and thrown off a bridge then I'll like it. Oh and if we find out Raiden is a girl. It would be pretty believeable. I mean they only used a drinking straw to cover up his privates in MGS 2.

A perfect example of what I meant. The thing is, Snake doesn't make the series. He makes the stories we've had so far. He drove it all forward, even in MGS2, many people were pushed on in the game because they wanted to know
why Snake was calling himself Iriquois Pliskin
and what he would do next, what his plan was, where he would end up.

Snake may be gone from the series as a playable character, he may even be dead, but his story will drive the fans on. He is irrevocably entwined in the history of Metal Gear, and no matter if the player controls Snake, Raiden, Sunny or one of the wolves from the secret passage behind the bookcase in the commander's office, we'll always be hearing Snake's story.

I know Raiden is quite feminine, but they make fun of that in MGS2 (see the meeting with the president in the Shell), they know what they designed, as they started out designing a woman as I recall. But it really threw the fans who thought they would be controlling their hero, Snake. We wondered at first if he had died somehow, we were outraged that they would take Snake away. But it made the story and Snake's character even more intriguing!

In the first game, every second line of Snake's was a question, he was a clueless grunt. In MGS2, he had all the answers, he was behind the scenes, fixing the world. If we had known what he was doing, we wouldn't have been interested in the story. How can a story keep you gripped if you already know what happens?

I personally really liked the whole other side narrative in MGS2 and i thought how they integrated Raiden into the storyline and the whole...
!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!!

Raiden's operation at Big Shell being a Re-enactment of the the operation that Snake completed in Shadow Moses was really intelligent and clever to me. I couldn't see how they would have topped that, had the game just been about Dave, you know?
I can only hope that in Rising they put in some more of that tracking idea that you did halfway through MGS4 where....

!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!!!!!!

you're tracking Naomi through the jungle via her footprints, and clothes.
While Snake enchanced the series, I don't think it survives ONLY because of him. The other characters of the Metal Gear universe are brilliant too. The story has always been top-notch right from the first game on the Famicom up til MGS4. The gameplay has always been a cut above any other game for it's time. Also, where applicable, the voice acting in the games is simply superb as are the cutscenes, and camera angles.

Long Live Hideo. If it doesn't get old, or stagnant, i say make a million Metal Gear games!
