Hmmm, I think we need to hold off until there is more information on this. As much as I hate child molesters, having been a victim once myself as a kid, I also believe in "innocent until proven guilty" and it's bad enough how these allegations can follow innocent people around. I'd hold off on judgement until he's actually convicted of something.
I say this because the situation raises some odd questions. For one, one of the girls involved is 11 years old. At 11 parents generally keep track of their children. While it's possible for an 11 year old to get into a car with a 20 year old stranger and drive off, it's unlikely since that's the age when even if kids are going to a friend's house, the parents give the occasional call to check on them, make sure they made it, etc. 14 years old on the other hand is a bit differant.
I also notice that guy is being given the oppertunity to turn himself in, as opposed to having been hunted down like a dog (the expectation that he'll turn himself in, implies communication).
What's more if I read that correctly, the charges are being brought by school officials, not the parents.
If the parents were suspected of pimping their kids or something like that, it would be a big deal and the focus of this more than anything. In reality I'm suspecting there might be a misunderstanding involved here.
How could this possibly be misunderstood? Well, parents have some odd problems when wanting to dicusss sex with their kids, and they DO worry about their kids having sex, even as young as 11 since it DOES happen that kids get involved in stupid things at that point. There are a lot of arguements out there about encouraging responsible behavior, as opposed to pure abstinance which I generally agree with. Parents on the other hand are frequently uncomfortable with say giving their 11 year old daughter condoms, or telling their kids to get off with a dildo or vibrator if they have the urge rather than risking it with anothr person. That's wierder than "the talk" in a lot of cases.
One arrangement I've been aware of, if when the parents arrange to have a friend handle that part of things after "the talk" and thus give the children the illusion of deniability (ie avoiding the awkwardness of knowing their parents know), as well as not feeling wierd themselves. It's sort of like if they figured this stuff out on their own and just decided to be responsible so to speak.
We don't know how well everyone involved knows this guy off XBL, for all we know he met the parents since they don't seem to be the ones making the complaints, which is probably why he has the oppertunity to turn himself in (and has been given time to get his affairs in order) rather than being dragged away. The reaction of the authorities doesn't seem to yell "horrible child predator" to me despire the sensationalized presentation of the facts.
I'm not saying the above possibility is what happened, just pointing out that there are a number of scenarios here, and you should look at how the authorities are reacting to the situation and certain things that seem to be skirted around or aren't mentioned, rather than the accusation itself.
If the guy is a predatory pedophille, he needs to be nailed to the wall, but let the authorities do their job. The police generally do not coddle molestors, and the fact that they seem to be treating this guy with relative kid gloves is one of the big things that makes me think there must be more to this story.
