Microsoft Announces White Xbox One Master Chief Bundle For US Gamers

Microsoft will release a new $349 Xbox One bundle complete with a white console and a digital copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection to US retailers later this month.

The <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/xbox%20one?os=xbox+one>Xbox One isn't selling poorly. That being the case, it's also perhaps not selling as well as Microsoft would like. Sony's PlayStation 4 has <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139835-PS4-Outsells-Xbox-One-Again-in-January-2015>soundly defeated its pretty much since the moment it hit the market. The only exception was during the closing months of 2014 when the Xbox One, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139058-Xbox-One-Top-Selling-Console-in-November>bolstered by holiday sales and affordable bundles, managed to usurp the PS4's throne as the reigning king of console sales. Likely hoping to repeat that success, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/microsoft>Microsoft today announced its intention to release a new special edition bundle aimed at getting more Xbox's into American homes.

Dubbed the Xbox One Special Edition Halo: The Master Chief Collection Bundle (rolls right off the tongue), the new bundle will contain pretty much everything an Xbox fan could want to get started with the Xbox One. In addition to a special white-shelled 500GB console, the bundle will include a controller, HDMI cable, chat headset and a digital download code for Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Best of all, the whole thing will only cost $349 which is a significant bargain when you consider that the Xbox One and Master Chief Collection cost $400 and $60 when purchased separately. Microsoft didn't give a specific release date for the bundle but indicated that it will be available "at participating U.S. retailers" later this month.

We'd say that gamers keen on getting an Xbox One should take advantage of this but, honestly, we don't know if rushing is really all that necessary. It's not like this is the first time Microsoft has released a $349 Xbox One bundle this year, after all. In fact, just back in March the company gave gamers a nearly identical bundle with a black Xbox instead of a white one. Almost makes you wonder why they don't just drop the console's standard price and be done with it.

White... WHITE??!? Way to put the effort in Microsoft.

We all know that anything related to the Chief should be green, green and very mean.

Of course when I think of Master Chief I think I of the colour white! Uh... it could have been at least light blue for Halo... god dammit, this sucks ass compared to the Halo 4 console bundle.

LOOK AT IT.
Here's hoping the Halo 5 one will be much better.

This is just the same white Xbox One they gave the launch team, without the "I MADE THIS" stickers...

..like what came with Sunset Overdrive bundle...

For something that was supposed to be "limited edition" they sure seem to have plenty still knocking around.

Well, I already have an Xbox One, and I live in the UK. At least I am reminded of how beautiful the white Xbox One is, though :)

Well, I do have a white PS4, and I do want to eventually pick up a Xbox One, and it would certain match my--NO! Must stay strong! System needs more games first. Must keep reminding myself of that. Needs more games than Halo 5 and the Halo Collection.

But still, it is white, which is a nice change of pace from everything else being black, black, black...

Fittingly enough, I think the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 look better in white, and I deliberately went out of my way to get the Wii U in black for purely aesthetic reasons (also, Windwaker HD).

Gosh darn, creators, you're failing to appeal to my specific aesthetic preferences.

Was that as reward, a punishment or some kind of warning to future generations?

I'd say punishment, very much a "look what you did to the world" situation :p

The price for a bare bones xbone went back up again? Yeah, they just need to keep it at $350. Jumping around is confusing the soccer moms hoping to get something for lil' Timmy's birthday and still off putting for someone watching the prices closely. Plus the xbox still has several disadvantages against the PS4. They might as well make the price their advantage. Bonus points if they keep this bundle going for a looong time. From what I hear, the online MP still isn't fixed for many, so it's just the decent, but overall not too stellar, campaigns to a few last gen FPSes that they're throwing in as a bonus.

Either that, or they should go with the Nintendo option, which is release another system that is exactly the same, except for its color. I can see many people trading in the black xboxes for a white one, and many others buying those used xboxes and making up the price different by purchasing more games.

Right now I'd rank the Xbox One just slightly higher than a Wii U on the "handy to own gaming console" scale, with the dead last being the poor PS Vita (which unfortunately has been sitting neglected in my gaming cupboard for the last couple of months). This feels like when the PS2 came out all over again, where Sony just hit the right buttons, the stars aligned, and it's the gaming console to own.

Now to figure out how I'm going to go about updating my 3ds to the new model while retaining the original rewards I got from being an early adopter...
