Well it always clear things up for new users at least. It's a good step considering the obvious desire to get into more casual market as well.
Still im waiting for the whole Live thing being available in all countries Microsoft sells Xboxes. So far, in Poland you have to lie and make UK account to even benefit from Live because they can't set up Polish live ever since Xbox release...

You really really can't. You pay for internet, and I pay more for internet per year then I do for my XBL subscription.

But you still have to pay for your internet on top of the XBL subscription, that's what he's getting at.

I wonder how many hours of consultation, graphs, surveys, and lab monkeys it took for Microsoft to arrive at the decision to change the name. Honestly I'd be rather interested in how much money they pissed away in this inane decision alone.
id be interest in how much money microsoft needs to gross in 1 year before they decide 100 billion is enough for them to make XBL free considering the PS3 has been free since the launch.

Laugh all you want at us "idiots" who pay Microsoft to play online.
BUT
When another game decides that DLC will come early to Xbox Live and that some content will be exclusive to live don't come crying to me with all your' "Omg game developer X sold out to Microsoft what cunts blah blah blah"
I pay for service, whether its good value for money is up to the individual.

Is the $10 price rise across the board? Like, for Australian memberships too? Even though only US and Canada (and Europe, I think) can actually use features like Netflix?
It's kinda funny, Netflix came to Canada last month but the service isn't available on the 360 yet, just the Wii and PS3. Not a big deal though since Netflix Canada is horrid.

You pay because they do a remarkable job stopping all the rampant harassment that games are infamous for online.

I kid...they are terrible at it because the trolls pay them.
Actually Microsoft does do as good a job as is realistically possible* to prevent douches from ruining other people's experiences. The "Player Review" system is quite effective at keeping you personally from being matched again with people you didn't enjoy playing with (be it because of their skill or demeanor).

The banning system itself is automated based on submitted complaints and reviews. It works fairly well when people use those systems. They only ban gamertags by this method though, and this ban is usually temporary and people can always use another gamertag if they're willing to pay. Microsoft does however ban Xbox 360 consoles from Xbox Live for modding, which they can verify themselves.

There's also a fair number of moderators who can issue gamertag bans at their discretion. You've got to remember though, a gargantuan number of people use Xbox Live. And Microsoft doesn't consider "being annoying" a bannable offense, which is why they offer the mute and avoid options.

[small]*OK, they could do better. The point is they do a very good job as long as players take the initiative improve their online experience. It takes less than 30 seconds to mute, avoid, or file a complaint on someone.[/small]

Yeah, just like music, movies or games right.
No, like Steam. Which is Xbox LIVE Gold, except free.

no no your not paying to play counterstrike multiplayer
you must have pirated it

That is the worst comparison ever but if that's how someone justifies paying for the thing i get for free then more power to Microsoft

But that's just completely... wrong. As in, incorrect, non-factual, blatant lies. So it's not a valid argument anywhere.

Red is the new Blue again. Nothing's changed, except where Gold is concerned. I'm actually surprised they didn't cut services from Free to make them only available on Gold. But considering you don't get multiplayer on Free, what really is there to cut away?
hmm how about free members don't get achievements yeah.. that's about all i can figure
Yaknow this gives me an idea, where Gamerscore can count like tickets in an arcade. You can trade in a certain amount for little dillybopper DLC in games. Like Dillyboppers on your Call of Duty soldier.
Yeah, that would be cool.

Okay, quick lesson here in what is being meant here. Both PC and Console games you pay money to get. But for PC you don't have to pay to play online. For Xbox you have to pay to play online. That's what is meant by playing for free. You might try PC gaming sometime and see what we mean.

I realize that :).

I just always found it odd I was paying them for a service that had no fewer annoyances than the free alternatives.

Which, as the market usually works, caused me to switch consoles.

Now I won't judge anyone who uses the service, it just wasn't for me :).

I just realized that I had always assumed paying for multiplayer to be natural.

Ugh, sometimes the things game companies get away with irritates me.

I know that few people would boycott the internet service though, so I guess there's no point complaining.

Ugh

The fact that online play isn't free is bullshit, however I think you should still be able to pay for extra stuff with the gold membership, such as facebook, twitter, lastfm and so forth. The fact I have to pay to play online is a complete load of shit and that's the one thing I refuse to fork money out for
Couldn't agree more.

To add to this, Xbox Live is a peer to peer network. There is no running costs towards Microsoft for multiplayer online gaming. They're charging players to use their internet connection and consoles that they already paid for.

The most ironic thing is PSN uses servers, which costs Sony money, and their multiplayer service is free to consumers.

It's hilarious how butthurt people get when I mention the flaws of Live costing money.

I'll still get Xbox Live Gold though, I do enjoy the additional features it comes with and I may as well go with it!

I don't use Netflix or Facebook. I don't buy DLC. I hardly play online anymore. Why do I need Gold when free has more than I use?
