Microsoft Spending $400 Million on Kinect Launch

Microsoft really wants you to buy the Kinect, going so far as to spend nearly as much money as it did for the launch of the original Xbox.

Microsoft is banking pretty heavily on <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Kinect-Sensor-Adventures-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA298/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287431824&sr=8-1>Kinect's ability to be a colossal holiday hit. That's probably why the company has committed roughly $400 million to promote its new controller-free interface. According to the New York Post, the marketing plan involves everything from appearances on soda cans and cereal boxes, not to mention the usual TV, internet, and magazine spots.

Robert Matthews, Microsoft's General Manager of Global Marketing Communications for Xbox, explained that "Kinect is the largest, most integrated marketing initiative in Xbox history, bigger than its launch. We are going to be spending millions to launch this globally."

"Millions" is an understatement, actually. Microsoft is going to spend nearly as much as it did when it first launched the original Xbox console. Back in 2000, Microsoft spent $500 million on the console's launch (though, admittedly, some of that went to subsidizing the actual hardware to make it more affordable for consumers).

The Kinect marketing strategy involves partnerships with groups like Burger King, Pepsi, and Kellogg's. The full media blitz is outlined by the Post, but some of the more predominant plans involve taking over YouTub'es home page and blanketing Nickelodeon and Disney "digital properties." Also, roughly 7,000 retailers will stay open for midnight launches of the system on November 4th.

It's not terribly surprising that Microsoft wants this launch to be as big as possible, seeing as how game hardware sales are slowing down. That said, $400 million is a lot of money. I guess we'll have to wait and see just how successful things turn out to be after the Holiday Shopping Season.

I don't know why but I'm hoping the launch fails..

Might be my PCism

Edit: Things and quote considered, my brain tells me not to hope for it to fail. But I don't really know much about the subject, so meh.

I'm not, if it makes them lots of money they can get working on the next generation of consoles and I can finally own one.

I really want them to fail. I really want people to realize that it's just a useless gimmick. Maybe then people will concentrate on making stuff that actually matters and not these money grabbing gimmicks. Does anyone on The Escapist plan on buying Kinect anyway?

I was about to make a pro Sony comment but decided not to.

I actually feel bad for the 360 only gamers that will have to go through MS shoving Kinect down their troats and up their arses. But hey, maybe they might make something worth taking notice of sometime, maybe, hopefully.....

When will they release a patch to soften the blow when it isn't as popular as Microsoft were hoping praying it would be..?

I won't buy it personally, but after watching that Extra Credits episode about them, I really don't want them to fail personally.

But I will not help them by buying it, since it doesn't really seems very cool

I'm still so against the space needed. Look how big the living room in that pic is. I'm still reminded of Paul Saunders in "Room to Grow" talking about how much room you need to the Kinect. I can't get a Kinect, even if I wanted to.

A successfull launch for Kinect will only delay a new console. So I too wish bad things for it. To be honest I think the Wii already has this market cornered. For a little bit more money, you get an entire console who's games have 100% compatibility with the controller. The "casual market" couldn't care less about HD graphics.

And if the Kinect is the reason for losing Live for the original Xbox and for the XBL price increase, then I wish double bad things for it!

I can't see how something that is 150 bucks for an accessory will be a resounding success. It will sell moderately, but I don't see people dropping that much money on it. I mean 100 bucks for the move bundle was more than enough to keep me away for now.

I almost feel kinda bad that I don't care about Kinect...I mean they are sinking a lot into the advertising and, obviously want to sell the thing but I have no interest whatsoever.

Honestly? While I would say they'll recoup some of that money, I doubt they'll pull a profit on this thing within a year.

They are going to crash and burn. Why would anyone buy this thing, If he could have bought a Wii, years ago?

If Kinect fails it'll be bad news for the industry.
$400 mil. down the drain would be very bad.

Ok, I thought Kinect would crash and burn... but $400 million of ad money.

I'm sorry, that is a fucking ridiculous amount of money, that is going to pretty much guarantee it will succeed as it is going to be publicised to SO MANY people then the bottom 10% of the common-sense-spectrum will buy this just believing the hype.

And then that'll be enough for the other media outlets will want to get on the bandwagon and we'll all get caught up in the hype tsunami as people flail around with their glorified eyetoy. Seriously, Eye-toy beat them to it with the "YOU are the controller" and everyone thought it sucked and this is conceptually identical only adding somewhat of a third dimension. But Microsoft is clearly going to FORCE this product to be popular by utter media saturation.

Faith in humanity... failing...

You do know the mouse is basically a motion controller. I mean you do have to move it to do anything so saying "leave my precious PC gaming motion controller free for me please" is like saying I don't want meat anywhere near my steak. I still agree with you.
