Microsoft Teases Touchscreen Texture Tech

A patent filed earlier this week by Microsoft would allow for actual bumps, lumps, and textures to be applied to touch screens.

The patent calls for the texture-enabled touchscreen to be coated with a special shape-memory polymer, which stiffens and sticks out when a certain wave-length of ultraviolet light hit it. This can be done to individual pixels, so that images displayed on the screen have a realistic tactile component. This could be used to emulate keyboards, give more depth to maps or virtual landscapes, and provide a more immersive experience to touch-based games. Imagine playing Cut the Rope and actually feeling the rope being cut as your finger runs over it.

The named inventor, Erez Kikin-Gil, says that as of now, the technology is directed mostly at large touch displays like the Microsoft Surface, as opposed to tablets or phones. Patrick Baudisch, a display interaction expert at the University of Potsdam in Germany who worked on the Surface, says that the tech might well be "... the holy grail of text entry on touch devices because it would enable touch typing at much faster speeds than on touchscreens today."

Though for now only aimed at the Surface, introducing the technology to mobile devices could be a game-changer for the cell-phone and tablet market. "There would be no more reason for mobile keypads," said Baudisch. "They would simply be emulated when necessary. That could effect massive change in this field."

Previous attempts at tactile screens utilized vibrotactile displays, which used different voltages to trick our fingers into feeling different textures. However, the displays could be noisy, and the flaws in the existing tech provoked Microsoft into searching out alternative solutions.

While it is unknown how exactly Microsoft will utilize the new technology or if the tech is even economically feasible, I wait with baited breath for the day I can feel the mountains and valleys as I move my RISK armies around the simulated board.

If only I could feel the burn on my finger tips as I tried to hotwire a car in GTA China Town Wars.... This could have many possible uses, DO WANT.

No need to patent it, but applying it to gaming?

Spiffy idea there lads. Approved.

*sigh* why is it that the first thing that enters my mind when I think of touch screens + textured surfaces is porn? Still, that's some amazing technology. Maybe I should replace my dinner table with a huge touchscreen...

I saw this kind of technology in a concept for a kind of wristwatch/smartphone hybrid. It wasn't implemented, just proposed, so it's nice to see some more progress into it. Being able to dynamically crate raised buttons and keypads could really make a difference, to say nothing of the other textures that could be simulated.

Bullshit.

There is already such technology available and experimented with success in the USA. How can Microsoft patent this?
Have they patented it? Or more importantly, do you have a source?

OT: Quite awesome, I'd love to see it applied to gaming and to have my touchscreen keyboard feel better.

I want a link, hopefully I can get pissed off at another massive corporation for patenting something that was invented ages ago.
Does that remind you of something?
It begins with "i" and ends with "Pad".

i think it might be a bit like people in forums shouting first.
as long as no one has patentet it yet, you can XD

Did you not see the "The patent calls for the texture-enabled touchscreen to be coated with a special shape-memory polymer, which stiffens and sticks out when a certain wave-length of ultraviolet light hit it. They are not patening touch screens, they are patening a tactile feed back device.

Whoa.

Not sure, but this might be one of the cooler things I have seen with technology.

You could use it in space suits even, where the screen stays flat, but the inside of your gloves will take on the button you are looking for. That would be AWESOME!

The next step toward space marine!

Even if this is true, being able to hold a patent follows one simple law: "I got it first." Even if you have documentation stating that you discovered it first, or made it first, someone else can snipe the patent from you.

Remember, kids, patent your creations first before your friends and/or enemies stab you in the back!

EDIT: There's also the method on which the textured surface is implemented. Microsoft is only patenting this method, not the idea of textured touchscreens in general. Mostly because you can't patent ideas, only the form in which an idea takes. Kinda like copyright...[/edit]

OT: Stuff like this makes me excited for the future. Now we just need to wait for it to be cheap enough for consumer level electronics and we're good to go! =D

If this ends up working, I might actually end up giving touchscreens a shot. As things are right now, I hate the idea of having to use a non-physical keyboard for writing lengthy texts. However, this is still unproven technology and even if it does ends up working as intended, it still won't resolve the issue of touchscreens in general being resource hogs.

Also, I can't believe Microsoft insists on continuing the disaster that is Surface.
