Microsoft Warns About Modern Warfare 2 Beta Scam

If you receive a message about entering a top-secret Modern Warfare 2 beta, remember that things that seem too good to be true often are: Microsoft has warned Xbox Live users about being wary of potential scammers.

If you've been following the games press for the past year or so, you're probably aware of a little game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one of the most eagerly-anticipated games of the year - perhaps of the decade. Many gamers are looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 so fervently, in fact, that some enterprising scammers are banking on their judgment being impaired at the thought of getting their hands on the game early.

On the latest Major Nelson podcast [http://www.majornelson.com/], Xbox Live Chieftain Stephen Toulouse warned about the nasty scammers in question: "We're starting to see some people - evil doers - who are trying to impersonate people from Infinity Ward or Microsoft saying, 'oh I've got the key a Modern Warfare 2 beta - a secret beta. If you just give me your password, I will get you in...'" he said.

"There is no beta," Toulouse stated, hopefully trying to quash these rumors completely once and for all. "Don't give out your password."

That does seem like a bit of news straight out of Microsoft's Obvious Department of Obviousness, but at least they're watching out for the common-sense-impaired in the audience. Oh well, if you're really, really looking forward to the game, there's always the latest trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95200-New-Modern-Warfare-2-Trailer-Goes-Down-in-Infamy] to whet your appetite.

Really? Wow.

Never give out your password, that is common sense.

Good that the company is doing something though.

Microsoft's Obvious Department of Obviousness
A sub-division of Microsoft's Department of Redundancy Department? [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment]

Whenever I get an e-mail like that I immediately head to the actual website and e-mail the customer service asking about it, unless it's really freaking obvious that it's fake in which case I'll just delete it.

Ha ha ha.
I got one of those yesterday on PSN actually. Anyone with half a brain knows that beta codes are never sent tout as messages. I guess some people are that dumb. *shakes head*

Always a straight deletion. I never give out my password... I'm not even sure I remember what it is anyway.

Its sad that some people will fall for it and give out their password.
i dont even bother with e-mailing the CS on the site, most of the time it always comes with iron strings attached.

If you're really dumb enough to give out your password, you deserve to be scammed.

Kinda reminds me of the idiots trying to steal stuff right after ODST came out... message to my friend was something like : "Hey There! I'm So Awesome That Bungie Gave Me Recon Armor! If You Want It Aswell, Just Send Me Your Password!" - Said idiot didn't even have all the vidmaster achievements.
I hate so many people of this damn race...

When you have people paying $30 for hooking up your Xbox to the internet for 5 minutes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.147122], people's lack of knowledge stops surprising me.

Meh, all this does is fill me with disgust. I know people should never be naive enough to just give out their password willy-nilly, but I hate people who take advantage of people's excitement for things like this.

I hope Microsoft cracks down on those trying to masquerade as 'beta testers' in the hopes of snagging some unfortunate soul's password.

You mean to tell me that that poorly worded email telling me that their lack of knowing my password was the only thing keeping me from playing MW2 was a scam? Well I happen to know a Nigerian Prince who owes me a pretty big favor (and a bit of money, actually I should call him about that), I'll get him to sort it out.

give it time and i'm sure it will be leaked on the internet

i've gotten a few of these on the psn, tho it's not asking for the password, still just as annoying tho
