minecraft 1.2 issues

is anyone else having weird lag spikes with the new patch
I doubt its my computer as its fairly new and runs other games (like skyrim) fine
but with the new update its been having weird lag spikes where it seems fine then freezes for a few seconds it seems the worst when my character is turning..

Do you have the proper version of Java for your computer?
Because getting the 64 bit version of Java fixed the lagging issue for me.
