Minecraft Pocket Edition Boasts 10 Million Sales

It turns out Minecraft players really want to build houses and dig for obsidian while on the go.

When <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110992-2-5-Million-Miners-Buy-Minecraft>Minecraft first proved it could sell millions of copies, we were still surprised by the game's novelty. When <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117251-Minecraft-Mines-a-Million-on-Xbox-Live>the Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition hit the same milestone, we were shocked that it happened in five days. So we really shouldn't be surprised when the Minecraft Pocket Edition sells well, but its recent 10 million mark remains a jaw-dropping achievement. It's surprising partly because Pocket's features were so limited <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115143-Mojang-Admits-Minecraft-Pocket-Edition-Plans-May-Have-Been-A-Huge-Mistake>that Mojang wondered if it had made a mistake, but more importantly, the feature-rich PC version <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123100-Minecraft-Sells-10-Million-Copies-Teases-Horses-in-Update>took four full years to reach the exact same figure.

Not willing to rest on its laurels, Mojang fully intends to continue its support of Minecraft's successful mobile version. A recent update added the ability to change game options without quitting to the main menu, while new features are planned for players with higher-end devices. Mojang is also readying <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122692-Mojang-Reveals-Subscription-Based-Minecraft-Realms>an alpha version of Minecraft Pocket Realms, which will let users create a limited number of servers on a first-come-first-serve basis. Once Mojang has tested the initial Realms launch, additional servers will follow.

What impresses me isn't only that sales of Minecraft are high across the board, but that they've grown consistently ever since the PC alpha was revealed in 2009. Few games can maintain high annual sales across a single platform, let alone across every platform Mojang publishes Minecraft on. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123268-Minecraft-Xbox-360-Retail-Edition-Delayed>Now that a disc-based version of Minecraft will soon arrive in stores, we probably shouldn't be surprised when those numbers increase even further. If history is any indication however, we probably will be.

I'd comment, but I am busy building a village.. The testificates have been pestering me for a port and a market for trading. >_<

well fine, a tiny one: No bloody surprise. With a bit of imagination you can do whatever you want to, why wouldn't you want to play that? And by extension buy it.

It's certainly a nice way to play Minecraft on the go without lugging a laptop with you. The only bad thing about this port is how limited the world size is...it's very tiny. I know this is probably due to limitation on things like the I-pod touch and iphone, but I hope they can figure out some way to at least make the world larger.

Yeah, I hear you. However I have my laptop with me all the time so I've not got the app.

Ten thousand years from now, an alien exploration ship will land on Earth and pick through our wreckage.

"It looks like this species... simply let their entire civilization crumble around them, while they were distracted by something. But what?"
"I don't know. Hmm... I've found something interesting! It appears to be a computer entertainment program called 'Minecraft'."
"Want to give it a try?"
"Sure, couldn't hurt anything."

You sir, have made my day. Have a cake, after I get sugar cane.

On more on-track note,
I ain't surprised that they've gotten ten million sells on mobile devices with their large following. I really want to try it out for myself but I don't know if my father would approve of wasted money. And my phone has issues enough with dying. Give it an hour of being on and it'll like to drain it self to 50%.

Does it work on android yet? no? :(
It's been on Android for ages, it is in fact the 13th highest grossing app on the platform, only behind 12 freemium games with many micro transactions. I played the android demo and it was OK, but I'd rather play something more suited to a touch screen and play minecraft on my laptop anyway.

So what's the total combined sales of minecraft cross platform? 25-30 million?

What's the best selling game of all time and how long 'till that becomes minecraft?
(No-one say Wii Sports. Release bundles don't count and that game is practically a tech demo anyway)

Yeah, its been on android, but it never managed to load on my Huawei. the program crashes on startup and i failed to resolve it. Hence the question mark.
As for best selling game of all time. Do we count series or a single game? For series its acontest between mario and COD i guess. No, scarap that, Mario would win by a long margin.

If we got by single game, that would technically be Wii Sports, which sold 81.64 million [footnote]http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/130131e.pdf#page=7)[/footnote]. However this game was bundled with the system anywhere but Japan, so thats kind of cheating. Same goes for Super Mario Bros which sold 40.24 million copies [footnote]http://www.gamecubicle.com/features-mario-units_sold_sales.htm[/footnote]. Of course we could count Tetris for mobile platforms, which sold 100 millions[footnote]http://www.ea.com/news/tetris-game-surpasses-100-million-mobile-downloads[/footnote], but its been bundled as well with Game boy so we must cross it out.
With this otu of the way, it coudl be that GTA: San andreas may be the best selling game of all time, selling 27.5 million[footnote]http://kotaku.com/5840484/gta-iv-overtakes-san-andreas-in-lifetime-sales[/footnote] copies.
