Minecraft Sells 10 Million Copies, Teases Horses in Update

Head developer Jens Bergensten says the team is busy working on features for 1.6, dropping a not-so-subtle hint [http://imgur.com/qAuCLex] that horses are on the way.

Minecraft is the runaway freight train that just keeps on going. Mojang's independently produced tree-punching simulator has now sold over 10 million copies of the PC and Mac version of the game. Obviously, this means that when you take into account the Xbox Live version, and the Android and iOS "Pocket Edition," that figure is even higher.

Head developer Jens Bergensten promised to reveal a subtle hint on the most major feature of the game's upcoming 1.6 patch once the game hit 10 million copies sold, and he has delivered on that promise. Here is the not-so-subtle hint [http://imgur.com/qAuCLex] that all but confirms that horses are on the way.

Minecraft got its start as a little indie title developed almost entirely by Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson. Over the last five years, it exploded in popularity, becoming one of the biggest indie success stories. 10 million copies is a huge number, and just goes to show that indie titles made by the little guy can easily go toe-to-toe with the big boys and their major publishers, provided that they have a good idea behind them. To put things into perspective, Call Of Duty: Black Ops II has sold 7.5 million copies.

A recent update [http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/782-tu9-update-for-mcx360-is-now-live/] for the Xbox 360 version of the game added "The End" zone and took some pretty big steps to bringing the console version in-line with the PC version.

Mojang also recently revealed Minecraft Realms [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122692-Mojang-Reveals-Subscription-Based-Minecraft-Realms], a subscription based service that aims to provide "a safe and easy way for kids and families to play Minecraft online."

Jens Bergensten, actually.

I love that Minecraft has managed to achieve this level of success. I think it's really interesting how my views of the game industry have changed as I've grown older...

People still play Minecraft?

Damn, I got bored of that years ago :D

Curse my crappy imagination.
My imagination is pretty crappy too. I feel completely incapable of creating anything with aesthetic appeal.

Still a cool game, though. Maybe I'll pick it back up again later this year to see how it's changed.

yeah, now i can show people my horse and how amazing it is.
and if they are nice, i may show them my universe.
Will you show me where the lemonade comes from?

Also, I'm sure the universe pretty much covers everything.

Whoa, girls in Minecraft? It's about time!

All joking aside, I'm actually willing to bet that horses in Minecraft would be a hell of a lot easier to control than horses on, say, Assassin's Creed III.

This is the outlier. It is an exception to the rule. The average indie dev wage is around $23k.

If your indie game is amazing, you end up with Fez, or Braid, or Limbo (to an extent it's indie), or Super Meat Boy; if your indie game is okay you end up with the titles that don't make it to HIB or Steam and barely keep you eating.

Then you have the sea of everyone else with tens of thousands of games released every year that may be great or may be terrible that receive no recognition and don't put food on the plate.

People believing they can make it like Notch is a pipe dream.

Horses? Was minecarts and Nether portals not good enough for long-distance travel?

I'm still waiting for a "designer update" and the return of the original Survival mode...

What's wrong with riding Pigs with a Carrot-on-a-stick? You kids and your newfangled ideas!

Minecraft: Stealing ideas from its own modding community since 2009.
But horses exist in real life... It was not an original idea created by an individual/modder.
I will consent, however, that somethings in Minecraft now were originally mods, like the piston. But is it stealing if Mojang asks for consent?

Finally, my castle has two stables built but putting pigs in there just feels really weird. Can we get lance a too so we can joust? Would probably be hard to craft given the recipes already taken.
