Here it is guys, every one's been nagging me to review this game and I'm glad they did because I finally got it and it's awesome! Enjoy :)

Miracle's Whip - Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Imagine for a moment you're stuck in a traffic jam on a hot day. Petrol fumes and stale sweat attack your nostrils. Choking smoke and dead air clog your lungs. Your ears are deafened by a cacophonous din of car horns and people yelling abuse. Your head pounds and aches and you wonder why you subject yourself to this stress on your way home every day.

Now imagine finding a side road. You follow it and find that leads out into a huge, lush expanse of invigorating, fresh countryside. The cool breeze hits your face and suddenly you wonder what you were doing stuck in that crowded, painful cluster-fuck for so long when this epic, life-affirming landscape was there all along.

In case you haven't guessed the analogy yet, I'm getting the big question out of the way first. Yes, BFBC2 is better than that other shooter. It's a huge breath of fresh air. To be honest, the comparisons between the two are lazy and smack of Blur v Oasis style publicity whoring. But enough about that, this review is about one game, not two. So what makes Dice's game so special? Read on...

'What do you mean I'm meant to be spotting for the team? I'm a 1337 Sniper with a 6.1 K:D! (gets kicked from game)

Campaign/Story

Bad Company centers around 4 eccentric weirdos who were apparently too naughty for the real army. As punishment (or reward, in their case) they are sent to BC, the military equivalent of being told to stand in the corner with a dunce's cap (except this dunce's cap fires big ass rockets and blows the corner into smithereens... but I'll get back to that). The first game was a jolly 3 Kings type story about a hunt for gold, while this is a slightly more serious affair, centering around a WW2 super-weapon that sounds like the tripods from War of the Worlds.

Basically... it's a load of nonsense. But it's good, clean, fun with no pretensions to being anything other than some light hearted context for all the violence and mayhem. Your squad-mates have each got their own unique, likable personalities and listening in to their chats is a hoot as they reference everything from Indiana Jones to Bush to a certain other shooter.

The campaign is a fair length, and nicely challenging on first playthrough as enemies are usually well camouflaged (or invisible behind all that damn war-dust) and are pretty damn good at killing you. Your squad-mates couldn't hit a T-Rex at 5 yards, but it's fine because they don't hinder you by dying or blocking your shots. It just makes you feel like a bigger bad-ass than them.

The opening chapter is very clever, and ranks up there with Bioshock and ME2 for great, immersive opening sequences. Things get a little slow in the middle, there are some horrid vehicle sections but all in all it's an enjoyable and fun campaign that really picks up again for the last 2 hours.

Sergeant RedCap never quite got over being molested by palm trees as a child.

Visual Presentation

The graphics engine is very impressive, with some huge expansive levels and vistas. The draw distance is massive, both in the campaign and multiplayer. There are a lot of epic set-pieces in the single player mode, made all the more exciting by the amazing physics engine. Explosions send dust and debris flying everywhere. You'll find yourself in some stunning locations like lush jungles, huge burning cities and satellite towers on mountain peaks. The only real problem with the visuals is that sometimes the environmental and dust effects can obscure your view. But hey... that's war for you.

Character models are detailed and well animated. Building interiors suffer from some low-resolution textures and an eerie lack of furnishings but you'll be too busy gleefully blowing them apart to take any notice.

Sound

This is by far the best sounding shooter out there. The sound team deserve every award in gaming for their work. The entire mix has been perfectly crafted and compressed to a level that makes everything sound massive. Explosions are deafening, reverberating through the speakers to the point where they can be felt on the Richter scale. Your main Assault Rifle kicks like a death metal double bass drum, sending the perfect mix of low frequency waves and high end rattle into your eardrums in an orgasmic, musical ear-assault. Switch the sound setting to 'War Tapes', put on a pair of good headphones and prepare to be amazed.

The score is pretty dull, though you can barely hear it most of the time under all the glorious chaos.

'Dude... you gotta hear this man... my gun sounds like Slipknot!'

Gameplay

Playing Bad Company 2 is fun, intuitive and rewarding. To me the campaign felt (and at times, looked) like a cross between F.E.A.R. 2 and Red Faction: Guerrilla, but better than both.

Like in the first game, 80% of the cover is destructible, which makes the game tactical and keeps you constantly changing your battle plan. It's fantastic. The shooting mechanics are a huge improvement on the first game, feeling more fluid and precise. It's not as fluid as COD, but it works well because it feels ten times more realistic. You feel like a rough, tough soldier as opposed to a floating gun.

Multiplayer is a dream. It's all about helping your team to win, so good teamwork is essential. You won't get very far in BC2 running around thinking your god's gift to K:D ratios. This means that the community is friendly and work well together, Your squad-mate isn't going to question your sexuality or your mother's bedroom technique when you've just saved his ass again with a med-pack, or resupplied his empty SMG. In almost every match I've played I've made a new buddy or two and had a great time engaging in teamwork to win. It is almost never frustrating, and when it is, it's because you knew you messed up yourself.

'Hey camper... stick this up your legitimate strategy.'

Classes are well balanced for the most part, (though the medic does seem to be a tiny bit overpowered when equipped with an M60 LMG). Assault is your basic grunt, restocking squad ammo. Engineer has rockets and blows up that tank that's been pestering you for the last five minutes. Medic heals (duh) and revives team-mates with the awesomely fun defibrillators, which can also be used to get hilariously shocking kills on your enemies. Recon is a misunderstood class, however. Lots of players don't seem to grasp the concept that no... you are not a bloody sniper. Your job is to spot for your team, point out enemies and take the odd headshot if the opportunity arises.

You get points for using your class specific skills, so I was able to place first overall in a game despite getting only 3 kills. I got my points from healing and reviving my squad. Very rewarding. Unlike in the campaign, vehicles are fun and useful to use and even more fun to explode into a thousand burning pieces of scrap metal.

The spawn system is inspired. You can either spawn back at your base or pick a squad member to arrive next to. It doesn't utterly eliminate spawn killing but it is the best system out there.

Lag seems to be a non issue from what I've seen. My bullets never magically passed through enemies, and I never went teleporting around the map like a broken Tardis.

Oh, and get this... players actually go for the objectives in the objective based games! Crazy, huh?

In fact, the only time this game caused me rage was when I accidentally hit the back button while typing the Escapist's code into my picture captions and lost the last half hour of work...

My one complaint is that it takes forever to level up and unlock any perks, or 'Specs'. New players are at a severe disadvantage to level 15 teams firing mortars on them and using red dot sights. But persevere and the game gets easier.

EDIT:

Having played for another few days, I have noticed the multiplayer game does have some hit detection issues. I thought I was imagining it but having seen a bunch of video evidence on Youtube I know now it is the case. This seems to be worse after the recent patch but will hopefully be resolved soon enough.

Overall Opinion:

I can honestly say, as a Battlefield virgin and with no bias, that this is the best multiplayer shooter I have played. It's like every frustration I've had with other shooters has been cut out and thrown away to leave an exciting, tactical, wonderfully immersive and compelling experience. The campaign is flawed but a fun ride, and at times it is sublime.

Verdict:

Buy (Rent if you just want it for single player)

I enjoyed this review! It was very funny in places, which is difficult to do in reviews.

I liked Bad Company 2 a lot more than I did MW2, but still, my favourite remains battlefield 2.

Anyway, it's not really realistic or arcadey enough for me. I like my shooters to either be totally ridiculous like Unreal Tournament 3, or incredibly realistic like Red Orchestra. Still, it was good.

Bring on the next review!

Nice review! I have a friend who keeps trying to get me into these (realistic military based shooters) games.

But your review makes it sound interesting. At the very least I'll know that if I get into the military shooter thing, to start with Bad Company and not MW2.

I hate it when I do this. And it only happens when I've just typed a bunch. Never when I've just posted a sentence.

OI!

Don't blame the TARDIS. It requires 6 pilots to fly properly.

Great review though. I love BC2 over pretty much any shooter out there (except Bioshock 2)

Thank man, aprpreciate the kind words.

I must give BF2 a try if it's that good. My buddy who's actually in the army loves it.

Good review.I really liked the SP for this game, but I din't have time when I played it to try the MP.The only problem with the SP is the fact that I was only 4 hours with it.Which is 4 times too short for taste.

Yes, I almost punched a hole through the wall after that... my pillow got some serious violence and abuse...

If you're gonna try a military shooter this os probably the least frustrating one out there. If you're just looking for single player, MW2 has an awesome one too (in fact, I prefer MW2's campaign).

I watched a buddy of mine playing the Call of Duty(I think) campaign, where you are in a ghillie suit and crawling through the grass underneath enemy soldiers. It seemed really cool.

Maybe it's time for me to branch out from Halo and Gears.

Yeah...Im gonna have to disagree with you there. Until you level up considerably you don't have spotting equipment besides for your motion mines. In my personal experience, motion mine assists are few and far in between, because they are limited time use, and you have to be fairly close to use them. I think that you CAN sit back and just spot for your team, but just because the name says recon, doesn't mean you gotta sit there and wait for your team to do all the dirty work. I felt like the recon class was more for suppression of turrets, vehicles, and objective interferes. A combination of mortar strikes and good aim can really keep an enemy team from screwing with your goals if you have good backup. So in short, I do feel like recon is a 'bloody sniper', and powered up enough to hold its own in the field of battle. Great review overall, I just happened to play alot of recon and thought a friendly disagreement was in order :)

Indeed the Tardis is a feat of engineering genius...

Never seen a broken one. Would that be a Retardis?

No problem, I see your point.

Spotting is easy even at the start though, just gotta hit that back button! The kind of player I'm referring to is the one who comes straight form COD land and thinks he's only there to get kills.

Basically, the dude in the picture caption!

Well I saw it while playing just regularly. And it looked spectacular. But It only took me 4 hours to beat it and get done with it.Sure,I din't find all the special ammo guns, but I did find most of them.

Why haven't I tried this game yet? Everybody tells me its better than MW2 but I get the felling their both different games. (except the weapons and modern setting)

Your review basically convince me to at least try this game out. Well done considering it hard to influence me like this.

They are completely different games. They feel nothing alike in tone or play mechanics, it's all a bunch of BS about them being similar.

I think we have a point of agreement here hidden in all of it. I believe that the recon can and SHOULD be looking out for kills, but I also think that he needs to use his mortars and spotting to let his team advance. A sniper killing people in itself can be a suppressive force, so i think our common goal of team support can be found

Which to be honest is why I was never interested in this game. All its BS saying its the 'MW2 killer' and its constant insults really put me off this game.

But hearing good things about it from a good friend, and reading your review I'm actually really interested in this game now. I'll plan on playing this sometime soon.

Absolutely. Agreed 100%

When do you unlock the mortar? I have only played 1 game as a Recon, I didn't enjoy it that much. And how often can you use it? I was in a game last night that seemed like the mortars kept coming one every 2-3 minutes.

This review was quite good.

It seemed to be full of praise, and happy with all the stuff that they experienced. One thing though.

Other than the crappy team in 1 player, is there anything else that is negative? I mean, is the game really all that good?
All this good news makes me suspicious.

Another good review there. I can't comment on the MP portion because I simply don't do MP (though I might break that dictum for the "War for Cybertron" online co-op), but the SP was good, silly and solid fun. Still, while I agree on the point that the gameplay mechanics and the overall experience feels more refined (descending the mountain was pretty cool), I liked the first game's campaign better seeing how it was so... what was that word you used...? Jolly! ^^

Well, as I mentioned the campaign dips about halfway and get a bit repetitive. That along with some awful vehicle sections.

One thing I did forget to mention is that some of the checkpointing can feel a little harsh by today's standards. I was surprised to get thrown back about 10-15 minutes' play time at one point after dying.

Yeah, the dust could be a real pain alright. Especially on that desert level.

And man one of us has to get the other console so we can play War For Cybertron, that game is going to rule!

That's probably why he picked that mission to show me.

I must admit, although I never found myself wanting to play these types of games, when he showed me that mission, I was a bit mesmerized by it. I kept worrying he was going to get stepped on and found out.

Yeah, it's one thing that Call of Duty is really good at, making those kind of intense set piece missions.

There's a great one in MW2 where you sneak through an air base in a snowstorm with a heartbeat sensor gun, blow up a fuel tank, save your commander from being executed, have a huge firefight on the runway and end up hurtling down a mountainside on a snowmobile.

Great stuff!

Simply put, that level is amazing. Best one in the CoD4, but the rest of the game is still amazing. If you're trying to get into shooters set in the modern day, that is undoubtedly where you should start. MW2 is polarizing, but practically everyone agrees that CoD4 was incredible.

All right, all right! I can take a hint. I'll check out CoD4 then.

Peer pressure is a terrible thing, I tell you.

Actually, my buddy might be a little miffed that he couldn't convince me from showing me the game but two people online convinced me to play it. So let's hope he doesn't visit the Escapist, because there's not much subterfuge in my username.

I just revenge rushed a sniper...

...with the mini UAV Chopper.

You can get kills by flying the UAV Chopper into people.

This game just keeps getting better!

Nice review, I'm not really the target audience as I don't play shooters for the multi-player and have little to no interest in the glut of modern-military FPS games, but if I was I would have found this quite useful.

Instead I just found it amusing and entertaining, so that's okay then.

I reviewed that too actually, the link is at the end of the review above.

I loved Bioshock 2 as well. Did you enjoy the multi? It was pretty wacky and fun!
Yea I have read your Bioshock 2 review, I love the multiplayer for it. Running around with Plasmids and big daddys never gets old.

Jolly! ^^

.. ... .. DUST!!!!!! *twitch*
Yeah, the dust could be a real pain alright. Especially on that desert level.

And man one of us has to get the other console so we can play War For Cybertron, that game is going to rule!
I already have both consoles. However, if I were to get the X360 version of the game I'd also have to pay for XBL in order to be able to play online. Damn you, M$. -.-
Come on, just get the PS3. You know you want to. ;P

Very nice review.

Nice flow, kept me entertained for the shiny things that live in my bedr- Ooo, shiny. *Leaves to play with shiny thing*

...Dammit. To continue my...thingy I'm doing, good spelling, no grammar mistakes that I could spot and as I said befire, nice flow that kept it from getting boring.
Sounds like a blast and may have to take your advice and give it a rental some when. Or wait til it gets dropped in price to £20. Which is gonna take for bloody ever!

Yes, and I have thought about it. But then I decided I'd be changing my name just to seem cooler than I was. And, as I am decidedly a dork, my current username is more descriptive of my personality than anything I could choose I think.

Using my real name is pretty much indicative of the awkward things I do in real life as well.

But when you get it, get it new, because you get extra maps and stuff for buying a new copy.

Also, how much does a PS3 cost where you live? Even the PS3 Slim 120GB costs less than 300 Euros around here, and I'm sure they sometimes temporarily reduce the price even further. Just do what I did: Go hungry for a few months! Believe me, it saves cash like nobody's business! :p

Damn right, everyone should play on whatever level they have the most fun with. BC2 is a hard game and a lot of players would find it a more pleasant experience on easy.

Recon is a misunderstood class, however. Lots of players don't seem to grasp the concept that no... you are not a bloody sniper. Your job is to spot for your team, point out enemies and take the odd headshot if the opportunity arises.
No problem, I see your point.

Spotting is easy even at the start though, just gotta hit that back button! The kind of player I'm referring to is the one who comes straight form COD land and thinks he's only there to get kills.

Basically, the dude in the picture caption!
I think we have a point of agreement here hidden in all of it. I believe that the recon can and SHOULD be looking out for kills, but I also think that he needs to use his mortars and spotting to let his team advance. A sniper killing people in itself can be a suppressive force, so i think our common goal of team support can be found
Absolutely. Agreed 100%

When do you unlock the mortar? I have only played 1 game as a Recon, I didn't enjoy it that much. And how often can you use it? I was in a game last night that seemed like the mortars kept coming one every 2-3 minutes.
I don't know precisely but it isn't really that hard to unlock. 4-5 games decently done I think, maso menos. It recharges probably in one minute i think? I usually pop one off, wait for it to stop, snipe two guys and its good to go.
What it really comes down to is a commitment to the class. Once you start putting time in it, it gets alot better. I don't care what you say, (but of course I do in terms of civilized discussion), but there is nothing more satisfying than a 200 point marksman headshot from all the way across the map. Recon takes patience, but it is extraordinarily rewarding. And play until you get the mortar at least, I always use it and sometimes its vital to survival. (Except of course loading up an ATV with 6 packs of C4 and driving into an objective)

I definitely agree, but yeah man its fun stuff. Recon doesn't seem to get enough respect, (except of course in HC, which is ridiculous, and two hit kills are fine with me, epsecially with the not-so-occasional one hit headshot. But alas, I am in woe. I do not own the game anymore. It may discredit me to some degree, but I only borrowed it for a week...I got plenty of play time in of course, and completely leveled the sniper, vehicles, and partial medic and demo, but not assault.

You on XBOX Live? If so send me an add when you get it and we'll team up!

I dunno what it is about this game but I do so much better than in MW2...

Like I could play 15 games of MW2 and top the scoreboard once... but last night I played 6 games of BC2 and came overall first place 4 times. It's odd because I'm very average at shooters and my aim isn't the best. I just use my head more and find good routes to the M-Comms and stuff.

It could have been a fluke of course. Not getting my hopes up too much :D

Unfortunately no, I am on the PSN. As far as mw2 goes too, I come in first when there aren't mega jerks dominating the game or boosters. Although, in FFA, I come in first a legitimate 80% of the time. I'm not good in any other mode to this degree, its just the UMP45, silence, holo, stopping power is amazing.

Wow...we really hijacked this thread, no?

Yes but it's ok, one may hijack one's own thread :p

My beginner's luck didn't last... got annihalated all day today and even got spawn trapped on Laguna Alta.

The UMP is amazing alright... I was shocked to find you could get looong range kills with it.

I can't stress this enough... the first one isn't better.

The controls in it were truly awful, really fiddly. I found it almost unplayable. Try the demo before you get it, that way you'll know if they're going to piss you off or not.

Plus thanks for the props!

Yeeah... Think I'll be buying it.

Another thing, I know a guy who plays the recon class properly:

(Look at his dogtags and shotgun kills)

great review, now if it only worked more often on my pc...
I've heard the PC version has issues alright.

Some people talked about not even being able to open it up, let alone have it crash on them.

Great Review man. I loved the first game and this just looks like it improved on everything. I liked your strategy for dealing with campers too

Enjoyed the review, well done.

An open question; does anyone know whether Onslaught is worth it? Really have not heard about it at all.

Cheers.

And yeah, that's my favorite thing about the online... someone's hiding in a corner with a shotgun and sniper rifle? Bring the roof down on his head!

The PC version is largely neglected by EA / Dice. Let's put it like this:

There are a significant number of bugs/glitches.
1) The netcode sucks, so it's often laggy - even when playing on servers in the same TOWN as me, and I've got a 5 Down / 1 Up line!.
2) The hit detection is HORRIBLE. At nearly point blank range (~10m), you can fire a shotgun (with pellets, not slugs) at a dude who's standing still and completely oblivious to you... and not get a hit with a single pellet! You can empty an entire clip into a dude in CQC, and still not kill him (a lot of guns are 5+ body hits). You can see blood spray from a .50 Cal HMG round, and the dude's still at full health.
3) There are a number of guns that are significantly better than others, and some of them you get fairly early on. It's pretty clear that there's a problem, when there's 28+ weapons in the game, and ~75% of weapon usage is made up by 3 of 'em!
4) You can walk up behind a dude, knife him in the back 4 times and not kill him. Then he finally catches on, turns around and knifes you once and gets the kill.

Since the game was released, despite constant promises to resolve these (and many other) issues. And since release, they have:
1) released a patch for the consoles only;
2) released some DLC for the consoles only;
3) released new maps and game modes - you guessed it - for the consoles only; and
4) are now working on the next purchased expansion pack.

We've only recently received a patch to the PC version. The patch notes only covered half the issues they'd promised to fix... and only about 80% of the patch notes actually worked. There are some bugs that they've "fixed" that are still very much alive and kicking!

And don't even get me started on the poor game design decisions. Just as an example... giving one class a) the medpack, b) the resuscitator, and c) a heavy machine gun that can outshoot sniper rifles, but has a RoF of 600+ RPM and 100 rounds of ammo is so totally balanced, don'tya know. Oh yeah... and if you thought the noob-tube in MW was bad, just wait until you meet Uncle Carl!

Add to that the TERRIBLE customer service. My clan stomped all over another clan in a ranked match. This was a BAD thing... because we later discovered that one of the forum administrators is in that clan. Since then we have been repeatedly harrassed on the forums. Our recruiting threads are locked for minor violations of TOS (often not even committed by our members). When some of our members complained about this, they were banned from the forums - and since EA ties everything into your EA account, they've lost access to every online EA game they own as well! And when we reported this to the CSR's, giving numerous examples of how we're harrassed for things that nobody else gets nailed for nothing happened. They reported it to the forum administration 'for action'. Let's be serious... a dude's trolling on your recruiting thread, calling you all "ghey fagg0ts" (or some such - never got the hang of l33t-speak) and you tell him to stop being an idiot... you get banned and the thread locked, and the troll is posting on your new thread tomorrow. Seriously. WTF?

So no... BFBC2 has the POTENTIAL to be an absolutely awesome game. But it's been ruined by blatant stupidity and mismanagement.

Bad Company 2 continues to improve for me; of course, the campaign will feel predictable during the series, but the online component is a great time-sink.

Your review convinced me to give the game another chunk of my time, so thank you! I look forward to more of your work.
