When I was a kid, I always thought the term "SitCom" came from Sitting Down to watch the goddamn show. Also every SitCom i watched as a kid somehow involved a sofa, people sitting down in front of a TV and stuff ... like in the intro from "Married with Children". Only some years ago I discovered the term actually came from "Situational Comedy".

Maybe its just me, maybe i was a real stupid kid, but did you have similar wird misconceptions/-understandings when you were younger? Maybe you never played DeusEx and always thought it was some kind of kevin-smith-like adventure about Deus trying to win back his beloved who dumped him? :)

I always thought society was run by professionals who knew exactly what they were doing, and were looking out for your safety and best interests, and that every thing in the working world was organized properly.

...I was terribly wrong. OH GOD I was.

I thought that "You're Fired" actually involved fire. I'm still scarred by Beethoven because I thought that the babysitter was going to burn to death after she got fired.

When you deploy your parachute you totally don't go up for a second, I seriously just accepted that as fact for years until my heart of broken on QI. At least Stephen Fry thought the same, that was a comfort.

The laugh track on comedies was actually the sound of all the people watching the show, laughing in their homes

I thought that the people they shot in movies actually died. I didn't know about blamnks, or just faking falling over. I was a assumptious little brat.

I thought babies came out of belly buttons, I was mortified to learn where they actually "came out".

I always thought, that the past was black and white...you know, because of black and white movies. Then someday god or whatever decided to add a lil color.

The rather common one of "Did the world used to be black and white?".

I used to pronounce Chuckee Cheese's as "Chucky Jesus", and Friar Tuck as "Fire Truck".

As for actual misconceptions, I used to think actually knew what they were doing. Now, I clearly see that pretty much everybody is out of it. I'm not even remotely a misanthrope, it's just that I once just took for granted that people had a clue, but no longer.

Also, I thought that there was a specific place in the refrigerator where raw eggs would magically become boiled eggs. Don't ask.

I didn't know sitcom meant that...

Lets see, reaching into the hat... Pretty Fly for a White Guy, for the longest time I thought the lyrics said "Finger in her bum" as apposed to "finger and her thumb". And now that I'm a morally depraved and very immature adult, I see other meanings and jokes to add to that...

That pants could only be worn by someone awesome. I'm not sure if that's why I thought tomboys are awesome or if I thought that because tomboys are awesome.

As somebody's said before, when people died in movies, they died for real. I imagined that films would have to put up an ad looking for people willing to die on screen. Whether it was the actual actor or just a stunt double.

I'm actually surprised that I was so aware of stunt doubles and actors at the time, yet assumed people ACTUALLY DIED!

I had this for a time as well.

I also used to think that sex was something only creepy deviant people got into and that it served no purpose. I recieved quite a wake-up call on that issue when I turned 11 or so. >_<
