Miyamoto: Don't Blame the Economy, Blame Unfun Games

While many blame the recession for 2009's poor gaming performance, Shigeru Miyamoto has another answer: lack of fun.

In a recent interview, Miyamoto said the entertainment industry is less vulnerable to economic recession, so if it does poorly, the blame rests solely with the content provided. "The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products. There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with video games, there should be nothing to worry about," Miyamoto said.

Despite the poor performance Miyamoto said he is confident the industry will pick back up, citing "enormous and unlimited opportunity" for developers to succeed. "There is no fixed demand for entertainment in general, and videogames are not an exception. As long as we can create something new, which can offer some unprecedented experience, there is always demand we can create," Miyamoto said.

The changing climate of console release is allowing for increased creativity, Miyamoto said. The past few console generations were competitions to bring forward the most powerful machine, but the focus is now shifting to what the hardware can produce. This allows for more focus on the content, which will allow for more innovation on the developer end, he continued.

While Miyamoto is definitely right in placing blame on a lackluster game lineup, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the economic situation. Still, I do approve of his message. If games aren't selling well, make them better. That way, we all win.

I doubt many people will disagree with that. More fun = more word of mouth = more sales.

Also I tend to think its also due to too many cooks.

Look at how indie gaming is getting more and more popular, now that there are less barriers in the way.

*STANDING FUCKING OVATION*

Right on! I couldn't agree more. I think the bounce back that he mentioned is already happening. For the first time in my life I started avoiding the mainstream games market like the plague. I've been slowly coming back since I think there the library of current gen console games are actually starting to have some great releases.

He looks comfortable in that picture there. I imagine it's not the first time he's wielded the sword and shield.

Nice sentiment, but I kind of doubt that the longest/deepest recession since the 1930s had nothing to do with the lackluster sales. When one's house is being foreclosed upon, $60 for a game is a bit difficult to justify.

"As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with video games,"

Wait... isn't it Nintendo who have been re-doing Mario and Zelda for ages now?

Miyamoto speaks the truth once again.
And, if my mental image is correct (I.e. him dressed like Link, brandishing his signature Hylian Shield and Master Sword,) he looks completely awesome doing it.

Yes but thouse are fun. They don't slowly die out the way other game series do.

Well, the next Zelda is supposed to completely re-do the gameplay, and Metroid: Other M is much different from the Prime series. So yeah.

Yes because mario galaxy is an exact copy of the original game and not in any way original or inventive..

.. oh.. wait.

He is a god among men. Hail Nintendo! Seriously we all know the xboxoids like the generic brown space marine/modern war shooters because they like looking at big muscly sweaty dirty men. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

All the haters rag on Nint for releasing zelda and mario again but every iteration adds unique gameplay elements which is more than can be said for generic brown shooter 8. The tears of fanboys are ever so sweet as they come up with excuses why Nintendo owns this gen.

This is so true. When will all developers realize that we want to have FUN when we play games. We didn't come just to see the neat effects or amazing lighting techniques. Wake up guys!

and Miyamoto wins again...sure we may be in a big recession and that is a problem but then again if someone is faced with a game that is just boring and bland they won't buy it.
