No arguments here. Too many franchises and not enough new ideas.
Franchises are not bad, in fact, new ideas can be more of a problem. Remember how many new ideas Hollywood used to have? They ran out. Now look at the movies these days. Do you want gaming to end up like that? Also, he REALLY creeps me out. He's childlike and idealistic. That just seems creepy coming from anything that isn't dumb or too young to know what the world is like, and he is neither of those things.
I don't think there have been enough new ideas used lately for them to be a problem.

Regarding hardware - The Wii is a new idea and its helping grow the gaming industry. iPhone gaming (though I haven't tried it) at least is making a consistent gaming platform out of the mobile phone (and hopefully Android will prevent the creation of a monopoly).

Regarding delivery systems - Steam is helping small software companies - Introversion Software accredit Steam for their continued existence. And even if you don't like new games, a similar service (Good Old Games) makes sure you can get older titles cheaply for the PC with reliable compatibility - which is something that even piracy doesn't offer.

Regarding gaming - Heavy Rain is (arguably) helping bring back the Adventure genre. Scribblenauts really injected alot of new ideas into what a platform could be(though its execution a lot to be desired).

I don't see a problem created by new ideas, am I missing something?

And so what if Miyamoto is childlike and idealistic? Computer gaming became a successful industry because it grew beyond making toys for kids; but Miyamoto has been there from the early days. And that he's still there simply means he's successful. He understood the kids and still understands what is fun.

Perfect man for the job I say. I'd sooner trust what he says than some suit talking about long term company directions, franchises and jargon.

Here here for refreshing honesty and acceptance of responsibility. And an interesting counter-point to a certain Mister Kotick and his his "make game-making less fun" idea

Oh yeah, as long as a game is fun enough people will buy it even if 75% of the country is homeless and broke.

Miyamoto, you are an idiot. People will only buy what they can afford, AFTER THAT things like "fun" factor into buying decisions. Oh sure, a fun game will sell more than an unfun one, but to write off how global economics affects the entertainment industry or to claim that people will keep spending on optional luxuries like games even when they have no spare cash is just stupid.

Hey, wait a minute, did he just insult Left 4 Dead 2(ZOMG!), Assassin's Creed 2(ZOMG!!), Batman: Arkham Asylum(ZOMFG!!!), Borderlands(ZOMG), ODST(LOL), and more? He... he is the greatest TROLL ever.
I agree with mostly everything said as shown.

Calumon: I know I haven't played any new games in a while, but tag is soooo much fun! And why fix what isn't broke?

Good points, however good ideas + poor execution = fail, doesn't helps at all if there's new ideas but no one knows how to handle them properly, unless it makes an incredibly fun thing... much like dropping your "friends" of a pit on New Super Mario Bros Wii.

This is so true. When will all developers realize that we want to have FUN when we play games. We didn't come just to see the neat effects or amazing lighting techniques. Wake up guys!
Large portions of us are "graphics whores" who play things for advancement in lighting physics, animation, and AI. :D

I appreciate the fuck (THE FUCK) out of this sentiment, but I would also argue that Miyamoto needs to step up to his own game. I definitely haven't been buying Nintendo games for a few years, and it's because I know that Super Mario World, Majora's Mask, Kirby Super Star, and Metroid Prime trounce any and everything they've made in at least five years. Even assuming their next batch of rehashes could have a quantifiably larger amount of fun, I would feel morally wrong paying for them when actually creative and innovative people get tossed to the wind because twats like Miyamoto inherited the entire fucking industry from his ten-years-younger incarnation.

GoG does nothing that a motivated gamer can't do (after more or less efforts depending on the games); but the mass of those who can't be bothered to understand the DosBox and learn minor tech skills represent a big market potential.
Those with the know how will keep pirating.
I just hope they won't make it illegal to download old games noone really owns anymore because they did some minor tweaks I could do myself, that are certainly not worth even just 5 bucks !

They'd just have to lower the prices, if the game industry keeps being so attached to the 60$ price tag, it is going to crash really hard again sooner or later.

As if he needed to. The man created Zelda for god's sake! That gives him a million years of awesomeness credit.

Interesting thought. I'll use that next time I want to say to many scientists and not enough assistants. Hope you don't mind.

I think what Miyamoto was implying is that there were more than a fair share of great games last year, but we weren't exactly saturated with them per say.

Lack of ideas huh? No, I don't think it's that.
The problem with the gaming industry can be summed up in three words "Not profitable enough".

Those words killed the SWAT series. The Tribes series. The space/flight sims. The giant robots, and a dozen others. The point is, these are good concepts that were never mastered (apologies to Tribes purists everywhere, but there is room for improvement yet).

It's the reason why we have ever increasing numbers on the ends of existing series, often with no significant improvement over their predecessors. Worse still, the new games will have to be relegated to consoles-only since the publisher cartels are clamming up with DRM in their quest to screw the customer.

I'm sorry Mr. Miyamoto. Not all of us have unending armies of fanboy who will claim that a turd is the second coming of Christ so long as it's being carried by Mario.
Or to rephrase: I find your point uninformed.
