Miyamoto Talks New Projects

Speaking with Japanese gaming mag Famitsu this week, the legendary designer expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in gaming, and said that his new direction is "not anything I can really put into words."

Considering his bank account's probably full to bursting at all times, you'd think Shigeru Miyamoto would be plenty happy with the state of the games industry, but he's not. "I'm not wholly satisfied with how things are today, but I think at the very least we've established a playing field where people are willing to accept it when you try something new," Miyamoto said. "So I think I'd like to try making something more unique."

What exactly he's going to try is "not anything I can really put into words," Miyamoto said, but he has hinted that he's going to attempt to continue bridging the gap between traditional games and a mainstream audience. "Also, myself and my staff are best at making action games, so I'd like to find a way to communicate the fun of games past to a wider range of people," he said.

In the end, Miyamoto returned to the topic of innovation. "I want to make games that are intuitively fun and haven't been done before; games that make you enjoy owning a DS and glad there's a Wii in your home," he said. "From that perspective, I think we need more 'clutch' games like that."

Clutch games, eh? What's that supposed to mean?

"We're making Mario and Zelda too, of course, so don't worry."

Clutch games..hmmm...not sure what he means.

His previous attemps at "bridging" like Wii Music, Fit and Sports can hardly be described as clutching.

He could really turn around Nintendo current cred in gaming cycles with a few spectacular efforts, I say : get Rare back to connect to the glory days.

pure genius, rare does so half assed under microsoft, when they were once arguably the most successful development team during the 64 days.

By clutch games, I hope that implies that they will be attempting to make a brand new franchise that doesn't start with the word Wii. A new adventure game would make me very happy, but I guess we will se what happens in the future (maybe E3 will be able to shed some light as to what he has in store for the next couple years)

... "clutch games"? Like... Clutch [http://www.myspace.com/clutchband] games??? I would totally play something like Elephant Riders 3D - even if it sucked, it would have a kick-ass soundtrack!

Seriously, though - this is interesting. Could it mean a fresh, new franchise that isn't Mario, Zelda, Metroid, or some shitty minigame thing?

amen. i almost bought a wii so many times, but before quitting the game store, i ended up beating the only few games that caught my interest.... i'd love to see this console do well in terms of quality, but so far i've been let down.

And in one article, we come full swing from 'Clutch' to 'Crutch.'
