Is there a good way to converter or decode them into a format my ps3 can read?

Check sourceforge.net, they have a lot of free programs for just about everthing, including conversion. Just search for "MKV converter".

Working under the assumption your files are legal backups etc., I've found "mvk2vob [http://www.mkv2vob.com/index.php]" to be a great freeware program for that purpose.

I think this thread belongs in the advice forum.
