So, I like MMORPGs and I've played a lot of them, a lot. I mean A LOT.. First of all lets get this point out of the way. If a game is free there is a reason it is free. Its because it couldn't be sold to people. The single best free online game, and that is like being the prettiest host on the view, is Air Rivals. The other free online games are Korean Grind Games, they all play the same so download one and you've played all nine thousand of them.
It's unique, its kinda addictive in that childlike way of controlling a space ship and shooting things. After a while though you realize that all you are going to do is kill flying bugs instead of the non-flying bugs of Warcraft and Everquest. You'll do that until you are high enough to kill other players, and that is the game. Before we take off from the land of free MMORPGs let me review three games, all in one.
Gunz: The Duel, S4 League, and Combat Arms. They are all the same game except the first one is in the matrix, the second one is in an animated future japan and the third is in the modern day. If you enjoy Halo Online you'll like these games, the difference is you don't have to pay fifty dollars for them. Their all alike except for Gunz: The Duel which is so full of hacking its almost a requirement.
We're in big boy country now the kind you won't get into without a credit card or shady connections. I have a very small list of MMORPGs that you ever need to consider looking at. Lord of the Rings Online, That Warcraft Game, City of Heroes, and old man Everquest.
Lets start with Lord of the Rings Online, it would be that new kid that is too cool to talk to you. This game has won so many awards in such a short time that any list without it isn't complete. I don't personally like it because I never got into the lore, I even read the Similarion to attempt to get the full experience. Its a great game but if you're not a fan of the series you won't have the experience everyone else is having.
Old Man Everquest is the annoying janitor who has to comment from the sidelines that he did it before you did. I made my character and wandered around the starting area with no bloody idea whatsoever what they expected me to do. I ended up finishing the starter island and was thrown into the big world in which I was even more confused. This is a very big game with a very devoted fanbase.. But its learning curve is HUGE and unless you have friends playing the game who will teach you it might be difficult.
I would say City of Heroes is as close to MMORPG heaven as you will get, you will have a blast making your character and an hour later you will realise you haven't even made your character yet and you're still having fun. The quests are solid, the powers actually feel powerful and there is enough content and various powersets to ensure you never get bored with it.
You'd think with that glowing review I play City of Heroes, you'd think wrong. I play World of Warcraft. I was born in 89 and I've been a fan of Warcraft since the first game. There is A LOT to do here and the best way I can describe the combat is.. You will either like it or hate it. There is a lot of good stuff here but there is also a lot of bad, such as the crafting system which I absolutely hate. You will never be without a quest, eliminating that grind you usually have to do in other MMORPGs to get to the next quest. The grinding you do comes from the crafting system. Everyone tells me I HAVE to have one to be of any use in the game and I've went 62 levels without one.
So which MMORPG would I suggest? All of'm, they all offer 14 day trials as far as I know and the best way to know which you will like is to try them. If I had to pick a 'Number One MMO' it would be City of Heroes if only because of how easy it is for new players to get into, and get hooked.
Oh, and last thing, if you do end up signing up for an MMORPG.. Don't forget about Sunshine, Showers, Outside of your house, food that doesn't end in -eto and -Dew and human contact.
