[HEADING=1]Big Bold Edit: Please read the OP and at least skim the thread.[/HEADING]
[HEADING=3]Those failing to do so will be laughed at derisively.[/HEADING]
I now have a list of about 10 games to look up and possibly try (you can probably guess which ones, if you read the thread). I suspect this will be enough to keep me busy for a while. Hopefully one or two of them will satisfy this strange craving...

Original OP below the break.

So, I've been kinda feelin like I want to play a modern(ish, I guess WW2 would suffice too) shooter, but I don't give a damn about online play. I'm under the impression the CoD series pretty much has jack shit for single player. No idea about the Battlefield series. And not much idea about what else is out there in this niche either.

So. Any suggestions?

PC, anything within the last.. oh, I donno, decade. :p

Oh, perhaps I should also clarify.. would rather the bad guys be human, mostly. :p

Edit: See here too [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.378506.14842820]. :p

I heard Ghost Recon Future Soldier was pretty good.

No. The Call of Duty games have great single player stories.
A true Call of Duty player doesn't care about the campaign
What makes you think that? You can't have a full-priced game for the multiplayer alone.
A true Call of Duty player buys games for the multiplayer alone

(As long as they're Call of Duty games)

I've only played 1,2 and 4 on PC but the single-player was pretty good. 1 and 4 better than 2, I felt that the introduction of regenerating health in 2 did it no favours... but it was still fun.

I also really liked Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (the PC version at least, I hear the 360 version is really different).

CoD's singleplayer is okay usually. CoD 4's was the best though, give it a try.

Also try Far Cry 2; it's probably the most mature game I've played in a while. It treats you like an adult and doesn't moralize you with it's choices.

It just squeaks by, but Freedom Fighters(it's from 2003, it counts!!!) was a great TPS.

For more recent, any of the COD games up to and including the first Modern Warfare weren't actually all that bad in single player. Far Cry 1+2 is rather good. Just Cause is...ok I guess. Personally found it a bit boring, but eh.

I like Far Cry 2, but it has it's flaws, or rather flaw. The regenerating checkpoints were too much for me in the end. I liked, no loved, playing with fire though.

Call of Duty 4 is pretty good actually. I don't know if I'd bother with anything else in the series. (I liked the original but it is a little long in the tooth now).

Rainbow Six Vegas is a fucking awful Rainbow Six game, but it is the best cover based shooter, you'll likely play. 2 is better than 1 and the plot is too stupid to bother with playing through 1. Stupid cheap these days too.

Battlefield isn't a series that I associate with single player. Bad Company 2 had a passable single player, funnily enough there is no Bad Company 1. BF3 has no single player, I don't care what you might have heard. THERE IS NO CAMPAIGN.

You should get Just Cause 2. It is really fun, singleplayer, and has very satisfying shotguns.

Hmm I've got a few names to research I guess. Gonna have a look at COD 4, Just Cause 2 and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

Gears of War? Yeah, I know, incoming GoW hate, but the first one came out on the PC and it's a damn solid game if you're into that sort of thing. I know I had a blast with it and I generally dislike shooters. If you're going for a TPS you might as well go for THE TPS...

You're joking right? MW2 and MW3 have absolutely abysmal stories full of absolute nonsense attempting to be passed off as a plausible and realistic series of events.

Then again, since you game on the Wii I guess it's kind of slim pickings for you in the AAA game market so you're probably just trying to hold onto anything you can get.

HEh if you want a truly good FPS Experience check out S.T.A.L.K.E.R... any of them... they all have something different to offer... though, the story is generally pretty underwhelming, but the real draw is the awe inspiring and world... It's truly a marvel to behold... It's also the main villain in the game I suppose... it's not so much about killing things and there are no real villains in the story it's all very grey... it's all about simple survival in a hostile and unforgiving environment...<.<

Make sure you install the 2009 Complete mod too... on any of them... fixes a lot of the bugs and spruces up the game all around...<.<

It's all shooty and military esque too so it'll get the WW2 fix for you too...<.<

But if you want something else check out E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy... it's French... that's all you need to know...<.<

It's somewhere between Deus Ex and Warhammer 40k... but on steroids...

As other people have mentioned, Crysis 2. It was fun, varied, not too short, could be challenging and had a decent story.
