Modern Warfare 2 Players Log 200,000 Gameplay Years

The Modern Warfare 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Xbox-360/dp/B00269QLI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278538138&sr=1-1] community has emphatically supported the game's first DLC pack, and played for an ungodly amount of time already.

Surprise, surprise, the world's most popular FPS has broken sales records yet again, this time for its first DLC map pack. Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Pack [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99149-Modern-Warfare-2-Stimulus-Package-Details-Spawn] was downloaded by more than one million gamers on the very first day, and passed 2.5 million sales in a week. The Stimulus Pack adds five multiplayer maps to the game and is priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

Microsoft also announced that Modern Warfare 2 players have logged more than 1.75 billion hours of gameplay worldwide. This number would equate to approximately 200,000 Earth years, and refers to total play of Modern Warfare 2, not just the new map pack. I knew people loved Modern Warfare 2, but these numbers make me a little queasy.

The Xbox 360 is probably the most popular platform for Modern Warfare players, but consider that these hours do not include time played on the PlayStation Network or the PC. The Stimulus Pack was exclusive to Xbox Live on release and still hasn't been given a firm release date for other platforms. When including playtime on other platforms, the number would probably make me immediately projectile vomit. I don't want to know how I'd feel if the hours people have spent playing World of Warcraft were also added.

If Jane McGonigal's theory [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99240-ARG-Designer-Believes-Online-Gaming-Can-Save-the-World] that online gaming can save the world is to be believed, I think Modern Warfare 2 is leading the charge towards world peace. That is, if we can get these Mew Two gamers interested in things other than annihilating each other over Xbox Live. What if those 200,000 years (and counting) were spent on fixing the world's ills? We would surely be in a better world, no?

Ah, who cares, I've got people to virtually shoot in the face.

That's horrifying, but I'm tempted to ask Blizzard for the WoW statistics now.

I love statistics, we need more statistics Tom.

I have actually contributed to this, I bought the DLC on day one and I haven't looked back.
But these numbers do make me a bit uneasy about how long I play this..

Wow, for all that complaining about the pack being overpriced, wallets have still been opened. I'm shocked at how long people can play this game. But then, I don't get how people can spend hours on WOW either. (Buy AC2 Map Packs, less than half the price of these and are much better!)

I wonder how that compares to other popular games, like quake, counter strike, TF2, WoW and (I can't believe I am saying this) Farmville.

And to think, if people spent these hours doing something else, we'd probably have a cure for cancer and flying cars by now!

CRAP.

Thats a lot of hours.

And I was hoping that a lot of people wouldn't buy the stimulus package with such a high price point... now it'll just encourage Activision (and other companies) to place higher prices on stuff =\

I'm not paying 1200 points for 5 maps.

I honestly can't see why people would, but oh well.

Great, so now Activision knows they can get away with overpricing DLC. Can't wait to see the next map pack. As for those hours, I know jocks that were lining up for this game on launch night and stayed out of school for about a week playing it. It made me think I should go join the football team, as I thought the universe had flipped or something. Anyway, those hours don't surprise me at all.

<color=purple> I didn't really feel the shock factor until you mentioned how the time could have been spent better. Imagine if people had worked together to develop technology or cure a disease, and had this kind of dedication. In merely a few months we could change life as we know it. Buuuut, we would much rather get that 4th prestige symbol to show off our manliness.....
