Umm, "by being idiots" IW has taken measures to diminish piracy. Without IWnet it would be much much bigger.

False. Less people have bought a copy to play online due to the loss of a dedicated server.
And less people pirated due to the loss of dedicated servers and were forced to buy a copy.
It's a double-edged sword, really.

I think this is a pile of crap - the game maker raised the price of the PC version to the same price point as the console versions, eliminated some of the features that the PC userbase normally enjoyed and now is announcing that Modern Warefare 2 was the most pirated game of the year (when it's only been out for less than 2 months...)

I've never gone to a torrent to get a game. I wouldn't want to take the chance on infecting my computer with a piece of software that might've been ripped off or an early beta version of something. Now I might be an exception since I've heard this same noise since I was using my Atari 800 computer. There will ALWAYS be people who would rather steal software (including games) rather than pay for something. There were people would would rip off Photoshop, Lotus 123, dBase and WordStar when it fit their need. I've gone into computer shops where you'd hear the customer ask the salesman to put Microsoft Office Professional on a low-end box instead of paying for a copy. I'll use low-cost alternatives, shareware or even freeware programs if I can't afford to pay for "the real thing". I will probably pick up MW2 when the price drops or I can pick it up used.

But I've gotten really tired of companies painting the users who actually PAY for their software being thrown in with the people who STEAL the software. I've dealt with dongles, key disks, copy protection, multiple installation disks, security wheels, secret codes and more over the past few decades. I've invested thousands of dollars paying for software and I still have to hear a company whine that someone is stealing their software. I've purchased EVERY version of Windows since 1.04 and have upgraded thru 2.03, 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, Me, XP, Vista and now Windows 7 but I still hear that Microsoft needs to protect itself from users who would rip them off.

Enough already...

I have to ask: WHY?!
Why the fuck is this so damn popular?
It's an average shooter, and there's plenty that are better.
(P.S. Yes I actually played the game, I asked a friend if I could borrow it.)

Just one aside to all this, RE: developers moving to consoles because of PC piracy.

Do they not think the pirates, when they realise the games have dried up on PC, won't just get a hacked console, and suddenly PS3 and 360 piracy will be up thru the roof?

Morality and legality arguments aside, piracy exists, it's not going away, and the idea of punishing the legit customers to slow down the pirates by about a day, just seems mad to say 'because of car thieves, we're adding £1000 to the price of all new cars, and putting a speed limiter to stop you enjoying any speed over 20 mph.'

Embrace your customers, make a good product, and price it reasonably, and you'll get your product pirated to hell and back.

On the bright side, it'll also sell bucketloads.

I wish there was a way to rewind time and get IW to try releasing it in a PC friendly way, open to mods and servers, and see what would have happened to the sales.

And PC players still wonder why many developers are moving to consoles, those damn pirates are ruining it for the rest of you, yes I know console pirates exist too, but the PC makes it way easier to pirate. Not that any of this matters to me, I didn't play MW2, nor do I plan to, illegally or otherwise.
This mentality would hold more legitimacy if it weren't for the fact that Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 are the highest selling games in history.

Of course, it doesn't make piracy any more justifiable, either.
Actually, in this specific case, I'd argue it does.

IW: "We're downgrading your online service into a giant piece of shit because IT STOPS PIRACY SRSL!"
People: "But...It doesn't... And you're fucking over the legitimate costumer... In fact this seems like a ploy to switch control of about half the game into IW, so they can "stop supporting" the game when it's not profitable enough forcing us to buy the newer one or not play online again... Also peer-to-peer connection sucks dick."
IW: "LOL NO! Trust me guy! Dude! IT'S TO STOP PIRACY!"
People: "...ok..."
5 million downloads later.
People: "...sooo...?"
IW: "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-"
Yep, except the last line ought to be "-----". It's not like there was any surprise on their part. Industry professionals are not stupid (most of them, anyway), and therefore do not expect locking up the content to have much effect on pirates and cheaters. It's all to screw the paying customer.

I don't infringe copyright on games that remain in print or are otherwise readily obtainable, and habitual pirates strike me as scummy - but so do developers that are full of shit, so this time I'm mostly amused by the millions of little pirates proving that the emperor has no clothes.

You say Spore was the most Pirated game..I thought it was World Of Goo?
He was probably mentioning number of copies pirated, not the percentages, considering World Of Goo had a 90% piracy rate.

As far as this news goes: I laugh at those laughing at the news that this game has been pirated (presumably because they wanted to see it fail), because pirating the game is essentially a purchase without paying, and that tells Infinity Ward/ActiBlizz only two possible things:

1) The number of pirates has grown, and more strict anti-piracy measures are needed to combat the flow,

and 2) People didn't want to buy the game for the currently listed price but were still interested in acquiring it.

"Piracy as protest" is a garbage concept invented by those who wish to appear noble while breaking the law, because all pirating a game tells the publisher is that you're too cheap or don't have the money to make an actual purchase. NOT pirating the game, hell, not PLAYING the game at all is a better measure of protest.

I didn't pirate it, and I didn't buy it.

I played it over at a friends house, and realised I wasn't missing much.
I did that to, albeit only because the other options were the Force Unleashed and Lego Batman.
It seems funny that popularity made the game the most successful and the most pirated.

Going by the numbers of MW2 on the 360 being pirated, I'd say we're well on our way to such a thing.

Not endorsing piracy but what can IW expect, they did a sequel to a sequel that's a remake of a sequel of a sequel of a sequel. Buttf00k'd the PC users totally and gave them the middle finger when they asked 'Excuse me, umm WTF?' and released a game full of glitches with horrible balance issues then slipped a few into the pockets of reviewers to get 9.5/10 for a game that's not all that good with a campagin shorter than Halo 3 ODST's which was embarrasingly short anyway.

Bad game, bad price, bad developer.

Point of the matter is if you serve someone crap in a restaurant and tell them to eat it don't start crying if they don't pay the bill.

Good. I'm glad they lost out that much money.
You are happy people pirated the game? That still means people pirated it and liked it which means they could support IW in the future by paying for their products. If your going to be happy for them not receiving money support the people who did not pirate the game and did not purchase the game.

I liked what the Arkham Asylum designers did to the people who pirated Arkham Asylum. Than again IW pry knew their game was going to be pirated yet also knew that they would most likely make big money on the game as well which shows they don't care all that much about the money lost.
