The reason that there's so many pirates is because they, as opposed to the idiots paying activision to stomp on their faces some more actually get a better game, courtesy of all the modders shunned by infinity ward.

And the number of console pirates is inaccurate, torrentfreak only counts after release so all the pre-launch xbox pirates(of which ther are a lot) are not counted in order to make PC users look evil.

Modern Warfare 2 Was 2009's Most Pirated Game

More people bought CoD MewTwo on opening day than any other game in history - and more people pirated it than any other game this year, too.

In case you've been living under a rock for the past two months, Modern Warfare 2 is a pretty popular game. How popular, you ask? Popular enough to PC version [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96206-11-Million-Modern-Warfare-Achievements-Unlocked-in-One-Day] - and it is far and away the best-selling game of the year.

But with its popularity comes a more dubious award: More people may have bought MW2 than any other game this year, but more people also downloaded it illegally, too. According to TorrentFreak [http://torrentfreak.com/the-most-pirated-games-of-2009-091227/], more than 4.1 million people downloaded the torrent of the PC version alone - more than double that of last year's "champion," Spore - while a comparatively meager 970,000 downloaded it for the Xbox 360 (still enough to top the list, of course).

Following in its heels were the extremely pirated Sims 3 on PC with 3,200,000, and Street Fighter IV on Xbox 360 with 840,000 - and on Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii K.O.'d Punch-Out!!, 1,150,000 to 950,000.

This, of course, is unsurprising, given A.) how popular MW2 is and B.) how irritated the PC market seemed to be at Infinity Ward. While Infinity Ward's move to a proprietary gaming service, IWNet, probably dissuaded some pirates from playing online, its effect seems to be negligible.

Of course, it doesn't make piracy any more justifiable, either. It's perfectly fine to be disappointed in a game - even angry at the makers - especially with very legitimate reasons, but if you don't pay, you shouldn't get to play.

Pirating is comparative to how much a game sells. If it's a very popular game, it gets downloaded much more often, which is not surprising in the least. That's why I don't get why companies whine about pirates. Sure they are stealing, but when a game makes $500 million in one week, pirating (at least on the sales side of things, not the hacking) should hardly be an issue.

A little haro: that alone can bring the entire Imperium of Man to it's non-existent feet.

and on a side note ....

SO WHAT?

These people who pirated the game probably pirated every single other game that came out this year. They are NOT potential customers and probably never will be.

Uhhh.... You misinterpreted the question, I was asking how many copies they sold all together (as in not just on the first day).

Oh and apologies, I wasn't answering your first question (only your second one ;p), that was just my take on the "AMAGAD MewTwo got pirated to hell and back, damn those pirates, they are screwing over the industry".

I had to snicker at that - inspite of all the money they spent on wrecking the PC version of the game, they haven't even made a bent in piracy figured, just like every other DRM-alike released to date.

Ok, its not right to pirate, baring a few scenario's, like the game no longer being sold anymore, or your DVD/CD copy of the game breaking, etc, etc, but I don't really feel sorry for Infinity Ward at all. Especially as they are just going to use this as a reason to either a) put even less effort into the PC version of 'Modern Warfare 3', or b) not even make a PC version.

Viva la revolution! Soon we will have dedicated servers, mwahahaha! *dons Cuban style hat*

Although they did state a little while back that they were going to add mod tools, which would mean they'd have to add dedicated servers in order to support the mods.

Mind you I STILL haven't bought it or pirated it, I'm supporting the cause. ARE YOU? *insert pointing finger here*

If it was your company, you wouldn't be concerned about the millions at stake here? It's pretty easy to see why they take such a hard line, if they could have cut the number of people torrenting MW2 on PC by 1%, it would have been up to $2.4M in revenue.

Plus you're right on sales, not supporting the PC version properly doesn't really hold water as a reasoning for high levels of piracy, it was the most popular game of the year and it was torrented a lot as a result. Plenty of games without issues suffered significant levels of piracy too.

It does lend weight to the idea that developers may want to leave the PC as a platform thanks to, despite sales being far higher for the xbox than PC for games like MW2, the piracy levels showed the opposite. Most likely due to the difficulties of pirating a game rather than any loyalty to the platform.

Developers (and publishers) are stuck, though.

When they don't protect their software, they lose money via easy pirating. When they do protect their software, they lose money via people boycotting the game.

They're stuck between a rock and a hard place with PC gamers.

This is making the very, very incorrect assumption that everyone who pirated the game would have bought the game if no Pirated copy were available.

AND they lose money from the implementation of the DRM, AND they lose money from Piracy (considering that no game has ever, ever been successfully protected by DRM, ever).
