Actually, that is kind of the point, I think. RPG means Role-Playing Game, so it's basically supposed to be you as the hero and as such the game has to accomodate a wide range of personality types. Is the player social or withdrawn? Is s/he a kind person or a massive dick? Are they a perfectionist that has to collect every weapon and armor or are they cool with just using the starter stuff for the whole game? It has to allow you the choice otherwise it won't seem real to some.
Though, really, none of that is forced on you, it's a choice. In Mass Effect 2 you don't HAVE to talk to all your crewmates, though you'll get the "bad" ending. In Dragon Age: Origins you don't HAVE to constantly upgrade all your allies' weapons and armor. It's just an option that makes the game slightly easier.
