I need to do a monologue for my drama class, it needs to be 1-3 minutes in length and can be from any play, musical, book, movie, etc.. I would rather do something dramatic over comedic. Could you give me some suggestions? I was thinking of a passage from the book "A Clockwork Orange" but I think that may be to hard to understand.

Oh, one of those speeches, huh? I remember having to do that, I used Atticus Finch's closing argument from To Kill A Mockingbird (People said I did an excellent job, too). I can't say I know many serious books you can draw from, though...

do the Tyler Durden Fight club monologue, where he states the rules, or the part where he talks about the all singing all dancing crap of the world. You could do some makeup to look like you just got the shit kicked out of you and everything.

Can't go wrong with the classics: I'd reccomend either the first speech by the Chorus or the first speech by Creon in Sophocles's Antigone. I've got the Drama Classics translation by Marianne McDonald, and it flows very well. Personally I prefer the character of the Guard, but his speeches are confusing out of context.

EDIT: Sorry, should probably put the subject of the speeches. The Chorus are talking of a great battle between Oedipus's two sons, and Creon is making his first speech to the city after he's given charge, and is praising the city and denouncing the traitourous brother.

how about Rorschach's monologue in watchmen, not sure how close to the start it's the one that contains "and the politicians and whores will look up and shout, "save us" and I'll whisper, "no"

V's monolouge in V for Vendetta, the one that uses illiteration to its fullest, would be a good one to do: it's just that it would be hard to remember.

I like your idea of Clockwork Orange, man. Sure people might not "understand" but that's the point - you don't have to. I'd go with that. It's the best idea so fair.

I did Smith's monologue from Matrix Revolutions when he asked Neo why he fought.

Here's a video that uses part of it on Youtube. It's the first sound clip.

I did so many of those. Drama class was awesome.

Do the one from Jerry Maguire, where Tom Cruise is telling Renee Zellweger that he loves her:

"You complete me..."
"Shut up, just shut up. You had me at hello. (crying) You had me at hello..."

Link is here for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z8--FlP9fY&feature=related

Perfect length (about 3 minutes) and one of the most dramatic scenes I have ever witnessed.

A really good one to do is Gollum from the LOTR Two Towers when he is arguing with himself.
Right length of time, enetertaing and shows acting skill.

Iago has a monologue in Shakespeare's Othello. He's so evil and cool and dark. Easily the best character in a fantastic play, and one whose sneering, vindictive jealousy is easy to act up without sounding cheesy =) Definitely my pick!

I've just finished a drama course about monologues.
I did 2 two minutes ones, one was quite dramtic which I didn't really enjoy and the other was Puck's monologue from Midsummers Night Dream.
I found quite a good website, If it can find it again, I'll post it here.

I don't reccomend doing a monologue from a film, it'd be hard not to just fall into doing an impersonation. And unless you're very good at voices, they're really hard to pull off.

Part of the reason doing anything movie related is getting the chance to reintepret these characters your way. Everyone seems to be all about Shakespeare at that age, but for a high schooler, that shit is super difficult to understand. Iambic Pentameter and his ye olde english, but all in metaphor...I hated Shakespeare until I got to college.
