Monster Hunter Brings Improved Classic Controller Stateside

The Monster Hunter series is coming to the Wii later this year, and it's bringing along a friend.

Capcom has announced that the latest game in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Tri [http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Tri-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002BRYXOO/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280256279&sr=1-1], will come bundled with the Wii's new Classic Controller Pro for $59.99. While the original Classic Controller bares a resemblance to a traditional controller, the Classic Controller Pro adds two shoulder buttons and grips to make it look, and hopefully feel, more like what the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 offer control-wise. The Classic Controller Pro will also be sold separately for $19.99.

Not many North American gamers may care about Monster Hunter Tri, as it's not the easiest series to get into, but the games sell millions in Japan. The main problem with Monster Hunter is its current home on the PSP, because the PSP control scheme will easily make a player's hands hurt. "The Claw," or one-handed control of both the PSP's analog stick and D-pad, is pretty much a necessity and not all that comfortable.

Monster Hunter itself is not the typical RPG, with no story to speak of other than: "You are a monster hunter, go hunt monsters." However, a story is not necessary, as Monster Hunter is all about fighting varied kinds of monsters and collecting massive amounts of loot/ingredients that can be turned into useful items and equipment. It's a pretty good series if the PSP's control scheme doesn't give you early arthritis.

Which, makes it pretty awesome that Monster Hunter Tri is coming bundled with a Classic Controller Pro. The bundle will cost $10 more than the game's regular version, but as a recent Monster Hunter player I would recommend that anyone looking into this series consider the bundle first and foremost. It's very considerate of Capcom and Nintendo to include a special controller with a game known for having control issues in the past. I'm not sure how well the Wii Remote control scheme works, but the Classic Controller Pro seems like a better method. Now, we'll have to see if anybody other than me cares and will be picking up Monster Hunter Tri at all, currently set for an April release.

I could shamelessly plug my group and say I beat you to this but your news is much more in depth than mine so I guess you win...

I am also excited as this classic controller will make playing the game ps2 style much more comfortable

Well, with that controller, it'll feel like the way it was with the old game: One analog stick to move, and the other to attack. It looks like they are trying to go back the control scheme that made the PS2 game popular, and that's what I like about it. I can't wait for this game.

FINALLY.

They realize the Wiimote is complete sht and give a classic controller. Another point to Capcom for doing fans of this series a favor.
You do realize that they already have another classic controller, right? Why do you think this one is called the "classic controller pro"? This one will just feel more similar to that of the PS2 controller.

This may finally be enough incentive for me to get off my ass and purchase a Monster Hunter game; something I have yet to do. Great move by Nintendo!

Good idea, but are middle aged housewives and children under 8 going to be able to play this game? Wii exclusive?

They should have dropped the peanut-shape of the original classic controller. This new model looks incredibly bulky.

Sweet. Maybe I'll hold off on getting a normal classic...

So it's sort of like Wii Play... a bad/unenjoyable game (at least that's what some claim) bundled with a controller.

Meh, worth a look.

Which does beg the question why they didn't just release this game on the PS3 as planned if it will work as well with the classic controller?

Well I suppose it all came down to numbers.

Monster Hunter series had mainly come out on the PS2 and PS3 PSP... each with sales well over 50 million each which I think less than 7 million PS3s have been sold in Japan. Clearly the publishers wanted the largest audience possible so went with Wii which also has free online (though kind of awkward with friend codes)

Edit: meant to say PS2 and PSP

I'd be getting it...

...if it were coming out on a legitimate platform with better online support. As it stands, my experience with online play on the Wii has been shaky at best, and honestly, Monster Hunter loses some of its luster if you can't show off that kickin' Genesis set to all your e-friends.

Capcom's using their own servers for Monster Hunter Tri, i.e. no friend codes.

Well that's good then.

Though I hate to be one of those people who say "Oh but why can't this be on something other than the Wii" I really do get the impression this game is only being released on Wii for the numbers rather than the capability of the platform.

The emphasis on the Classic Controller Pro seems to imply the Wii-mote's motion control is not that important.

Monster Hunter Tri in fact started development on the PS3... yet it mysteriously switched to Wii which must have been extremely disruptive as there is very little commonality between Wii and PS3 hardware.
