Monster Hunter Tri Coming To The West?

Capcom wants to boost awareness of Monster Hunter in the West, but is it willing to go as far as localizing the series' newest and biggest game yet?

Monster Hunter makes Capcom dinosaur-sized mountains of cash in Japan, but the franchise has yet to find much more than a niche audience here in the West. That's because of a number of reasons, the biggest of which I think is that the multiplayer-centric game doesn't have any official online multiplayer.

That'll change when the franchise makes the move to the Wii this summer in Japan with Monster Hunter 3/Tri. The recently released Monster Hunter G on Wii, which is the franchise's sort of prelude to its coming out party on Nintendo's console, features online play (paid online play, mind you) that has been getting some pretty positive reports [http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173899]. Now, if Capcom keeps that system around, it might have a practical solution to online multiplayer for Monster Hunter 3.

Which would solve that obstacle to success in the West that I mentioned earlier. Monster Hunter G probably won't come out over here, but the question remains open of whether Monster Hunter 3, the biggest game in the series in some time, will. Earlier today, internet sleuths discovered that there's a listing on Capcom's US press site for the game, listed with a "to be announced" date.

Seems like a confirmation, right? Capcom's said it's centers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.105773] in London. And if they're going that wild, can't we assume they'll want to bring Tri over? Well, turns out that the listing on the press site has actually been around for some time.

"We posted some MH Tri assets from TGS back in October, remember?" Capcom's Chris Kramer told Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5239798/is-monster-hunter-tri-heading-westward]. "We were also showing the Japanese demo in our suite at the New Otani as a way for North American media to see everything on the show floor without having to wait in line."

So okay, they've had a Monster Hunter 3 placeholder up there to put up some screens for TGS. It's been quite a few months since then. Why, I have to wonder, wouldn't they have taken it down by now?

Monster Hunter for the PSone was the biggest time sink of any game I played on that system. I loved it and couldn't wait for a sequel. I was actually going to buy a PS3 just for this game. Then I heard about it coming out for the Wii and I am pissed off beyond belief. I have no idea what Capcom is thinking but its a huge mistake to release it for the Wii.

I thought it was pretty clear MH3 was coming to the west? Can't see a reason not to do it. The TBA is probably because it's not finished yet and they don't know when it'll be ready.

I was really hoping this would come to the PS3. I have a Wii, but I'd much prefer to play it on my SONY system. They had better make it damn good on the Wii, that's all I know. Maybe it'll cause me to actually use the damn system, instead of letting it sit in it's box on my shelf.

So, no games come out for the Wii and people complain there's no games for it, games do come out for the Wii and people complain they're not on other systems instead?

I couldn't see why it's not inevitable a this point, so right now I just pray it gets to us before Christmas and we don't get raped on the pay to play aspect of it.

Trust me, you can't win.

EDIT: And come to think of it, I wonder if they would have released it worldwide if it did stay on the PS3?

Any reason why it's a mistake to release it on the Wii?

Explain the mistake. Cuz I sold a lot of Wii's to teens at work due to the fact that Monster Hunter is going to be on the system.

Sad isn't it? Oh well I'm proud to own a Wii. Wouldn't give it up for anything.

Good point. And trust me, just because I can't win it doesn't mean I won't keep fighting it, I'm ignorant and bull-headed like that. Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong and I can win.

Actually the subscription fees(that they have for Monster Hunter G on the Wii, which they have said they are never releasing outside Japan, NOOOO!!!) are actually really cheap compared to other MMOS.

I think it starts at 5 of 7 dollars for 30 days and goes up to 15 dollars for 90 days and you get 14 days free out of the box to try it out, however have to pay with Wii points so you don't need a credit card.

Your right, I don't own a Wii. My retired parents in Florida do and I have played it while visiting them. Sorry to say, but the system fails in every way. <-- IMHO

It is a lot of fun. One of the few PSP games I loved. Great with friends and be yourself.

Well I thought the "IMHO" would have been enough. I hate the Wii controls. Thats it, thats all I hate about it. I have yet to play a single game where it worked well and I think it will totally suck in Monster Hunter.

I would rather play Monster Hunter on the Wii than the PS3 or PSP (I don't like its controls and such a small screen for playing those games is insulting. Wasting good graphics on such a system..bah, I say) .

I've read in numerous reports and have seen a custom classic controller that might be released with Tri, which excites me. I'd hope that they'd leave the Wii-mote and nunchuck out of this game (and honestly, many others that they've already released). Some games are just more fun on a classic type controller.

I wouldn't want the game being released on a PS3, as I don't like the system very much (as from previously owning one. Waste of my money). Just not many games I'd want for the system, and I wouldn't want them getting any 'bright' ideas with the six-axis controller. Plus if the disc gets messed up for whatever god-awful reason, well thats one disc I can't resurface very well.

Plus....I don't want to shell out that much money for the system. Sorry, I payed enough for the PS2 and I still use it frequently (yup, Monster Hunter still takes up a lot of that frequent use too).

Go to the Wii, Capcom. Just make sure you leave the motion-dependent aspect out of it. I'll gladly pay for a Wii to play Tri.
