More Retailers Expected to Try Used Game Sales

Game publishers may not like it but an industry analyst has predicted that the high profit margins on used videogames means even more retailers will likely attempt to break into the trade.

The debate over the merits of used game sales continues to rage but there's one aspect of the market that both sides can agree on: It's worth a lot of money. Lazard Capital Markets [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88867] Analyst Colin Sebastian expects that trend to continue.

"According to our industry checks, one large consumer electronics retail chain is rekindling efforts to sell used video games, while another general merchandise 'big box' store is in trials to buy back games in exchange for store credit," he said. He estimated the total value of the used videogame market at "at least" $2 billion annually in North America alone, noting that the market was dominated by eBay [http://www.gamestop.com].

As attractive as those numbers are, however, he also cautioned that used game sales is a "more demanding" category than conventional sales. "We believe the barriers to establishing a liquid and profitable used videogame business are fairly high, including dedicated systems to track and manage used inventory and pricing, and the ability to refurbish products and restock stores to balance supply," he said.

He also predicted that despite the increased competition, GameStop will remain the top dog for some time to come. "While shares of GameStop have fallen under pressure historically as word of new entrants in the used market takes hold we note there is little, if any, evidence that competitor initiatives have impacted the company's revenues," he continued. "We continue to expect GameStop to maintain a competitive advantage with a core gamer consumer base, broad inventory of new and used video games, and high barriers to entry."

I work for Best Buy and wandering around the company message boards I've seen rumors of Best Buy considering a form of what Gamestop is offering.

I don't see it happening though.

Is that a Psychonauts screenshot?

If so, I might actually have to give in and go get some M$ points so I can get it.

OT: Yeah, used games are nice, if you can be sure they're going to actually work. Honestly, the buffing machines are what allow GameStop to actually make a profit, otherwise they'd never actually sell a game.

I hope they don't mimic gamestop exactly.

I go to Best Buy when I don't want to wait a half hour on line for two people in front of me only to wait another half hour while the moron behind the counter tries to sell me a magazine subscriptions & preorders for games coming out in the next year then looks for the game I want. If I'm lucky, they have the game and if I'm really lucky, they put it in the case they hand me.

Really, with circuit city gone, I really don't want Best Buy to become as annoying as Gameslop. I'll hope that they at least have more fair trade-in values/used game prices.

Actually, they could really clean up if they priced out Gamestop which they can afford to do considering how big and widespread their stores are. With fair prices they would attract all the cheapskates like me who don't even bother with gameslop anymore.

Yea, that is Psychonauts.

And Gamestop hasn't been that bad for me, but their selection is horrible where I live.
The entire place is stuffed with used old games.
