Mortal Kombat Gets Retailer Exclusive Fatalities

Warner Brothers Interactive has announced that preorder bonuses for the upcoming Mortal Kombat [http://www.amazon.com/Mortal-Kombat-Playstation-3/dp/B003O6E1JS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292289738&sr=8-1] reboot will include retailer-specific "Klassic" skins and fatalities.

Some people like preorder bonuses, some people don't. I'm generally a fan because I enjoy getting free stuff for games I was going to preorder anyway, but others can't shake the feeling that they're somehow being deprived of content. Regardless of what it does or doesn't actually bring to the game, just knowing that this stuff is out there is enough to drive some people crazy.

If you're one of those people, you might want to sit down while you read this. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment [http://www.wbie.com/] announced today that the new Mortal Kombat will be available in two special editions alongside the regular release and that the preorder bonuses will include retailer-specific fatalities.

First, the part that won't drive you nuts. The Mortal Kombat Kollector's Edition will include Sub-Zero and Scorpion figurines, an art book and DLC of classic (klassic?) Mortal Kombat costume skins and avatar outfits, while the even more exclusive Tournament Edition, which will be limited to 20,000 copies (kopies?) will come with all of the above plus a "portable fighting stick," although after the Godfather 2 brass knuckles debacle [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90874-EA-Wants-Its-Brass-Knuckles-Back] I don't expect you'll be able to do much actual fighting with it.

And now the part that will. One of the hallmarks of Mortal Kombat are the fatalities, unique moves each character can perform at the end of a fight to finish his opponent in brutal, bloody fashion. Among the most famous of these is Sub-Zero's "spine rip," in which he grabs his enemy by the throat and rips off his skull with the spine still attached, and if you preorder the game from Best Buy you'll get that fatality as part of the game, along with the "Klassic Sub-Zero" playable character skin.

If, on the other hand, you preorder from GameStop, you'll receive the original Scorpion fatality instead, and the "Klassic Scorpion" playable character skin; preorder from Amazon and you'll get the original Reptile fatality and "Klassic Reptile" skin.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon responded to complaints by assuring gamers via Twitter [http://twitter.com/noobde] that every character in the game will have two fatalities, with retailer-exclusive finishing moves added where appropriate. Still, while fatalities may not have any impact on gameplay, they're a core component of the experience and regardless of what Boon says, a lot of fans are bound to see this as taking them away. Is it a unique and imaginative preorder bonus? Absolutely. Is it a good idea? That, I'm not so sure.

Mortal Kombat is scheduled for release in April 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Perhaps they mean this? [http://i53.tinypic.com/2s990gm.jpg]

Come on Escapist, I love you, but if you're going to report on news I've already read on numerous websites, such as SRK, at least act as if you know what you're reporting on.

I think i know where this is going. If you want all the skins and fatalities, you´ll have to pay for the inevitable DLC. Why do i get this feeling, eh? Jeez...

I don't know whether I should praise Ed Boon for creating another Mortal Kombat, or hunt him down for making pre-order location-exclusive Fatalities...

next time it will be like this:

you get half of the characters, the other half is in several DLC packs. then their finishing moves on other DLC's, and the main storyline in another Expansion.

Great another Mortal Kombat reboot. Wasn't the problem last time is that they got too crazy and what not. Funny thing the last Mortal Kombat I played had the whole series or something like that of fighters. Thankfully for me I've lost my interest in the series after mk 3 ultimate/street fighter alpha. Let's see how long this reboot lasts

Sorry, Kouldn't help myself.

I'm iffy about this. On one hand, you Kould definitely argue that it's simply a small aesthetic thing, and even if you're just in it for the blood, there's still plenty of it to go around. Which would hold more validity if the things they were adding weren't probably some of the most iconic things in the series. It'd be like replacing Freeman's Krowbar with a fish. (Which would be Kinda awesome, regardless, but that's beside the point.)

Is there anyone out there who actually would prefer the Scorpion fatality to the Sub Zero fatality? I mean, I can see preferring Scorp as a character but his original fatality is beyond boring compared to SubZs.

Either way, I'm curious about the "original" Reptile fatality seeing as how he didn't actually have an original fatality. He debuted as properly playable in MK2, and he had two fatalities there.

I think its a great idea. It creates buzz for the game (because its innovative), buzz for the retailers (they get mentioned in press), and the gaming community (we have more things to debate and ***** about)

If they are really smart, they can just make the extra fatalities available via DLC six months after release.

I will just be getting the original even though i really want both but i'm not giving in to a simple market idea when they eventually release DLC that can satisfy me like with Red dead i skipped all but the free DLC apart from undead nightmare because i read up on multi and single reviews to finally give it a shot.

I'm that kind of guy that likes to know the ins and outs to see if a pre order or DLC is truly worth my money and time and i can say MK sub and scorpion pre ords are not worth my money and time.
