GRAVE from Gungrave is badass in its purest form.
He walks about with 2 huge pistols called Cerberos, and has a coffin on his back that can turn into a rocket launcher or a super fast firing machine gun that spins round and kills everything in the room. Or you can just whack enemies with it

Trevor Belmont from Castlevania. Seriously he takes on a being of god like power, who counts death itself among its minions, and he does it all with a whip. A flipping whip!
I also really like Hector from Curse of Darkness, and Nathan Graves from Circle of the Moon. Same situation as Trevor, only Nathan also had the power of the DSS cards at his disposal.

I would say Vergil/Nelo Angelo from DMC 1 and 3. But since its main characters that you want then i would have to say DMC 1 and 2 Dante.

Dante of the Devil May Cry games would be my first choice because... well, just watch pretty much any scene from the third game and that should be a good enough explanation.

I would have to say Alyx Vance.. ok Gordon is your 'main' protagonist but he is more of a vessel for the player as opposed to a character... Alyx gives the HL world its emotional resonance and makes the player actually care about the goings on around them as opposed to just wanting to bash zombies with a crowbar.
My vote goes to either the generally good natured, but stone cold assassin Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell fame or the jaded and devious Garrett from Thief.
I don't see how people can "like" Kratos; he's a self-centred, arsehole who's only redeeming feature is he can kick a lot of arse. If you met a person like him in real life (minus godlike power) you'd think what an absolute twat he was.
